Personally I thought Sokka’s whole character arc was the idea of a kid trying to act like what he thinks it means to being a man to actually becoming a man. It kinda like all his character development put together. Respecting women, overcoming his own shortcomings, looking after others, and just overall trying to be a better person than you were before.

It was also about overcoming a sexist environment, (even tho it wasn't the case in the southern tribe) women being banned from combative water bending in the Northern Tribe speaks volumes about the waterbenders culture.

27:10 okay but like, at the end of the season it's important that Sokka has had development with sexism as the group spends a lot of time in a deeply sexist environment. It's like the "final boss" of overcoming his bias as he sees what's wrong with that sort of system and how bad it can be (the girl he likes is in an arranged marriage)
@Casutama10 ай бұрын
Imo, Sokka's arc is much more about arrogance vs humbleness, the sexism is just part of it. Considering that nobody in the Southern Water Tribe shows any sexism at all except for Sokka (quite the contrary, Gran Gran canonically leaves to the South to _escape_ the sexist culture), I think it actually makes sense to remove it and just keep the sexism in the Northern Water Tribe. Sokka can still learn to become more humble and less self-important, and they can still portray how bad sexism is with the NWT and also use it as a further subtle juxtaposition of the cultures in the Northern and Southern tribes. The show itself drops Sokka's sexim _really_ soon and I don't agree that the NWT scenes are the "final boss" because we never see Sokka reflect on this culture of sexism and how it relates to his own past behaviour. After the first couple of episodes of Book 1, that side of Sokka is _never_ addressed again, or comes up in any way, and neither in terms of Katara's conflict with Pakku, his own romance with Yue, or learning of his grandmother's history does the show ever even imply Sokka relates this back to his past behaviour. He is staunchly on the "right" side in those scenes, and at that point it's been like 10 episodes since he's said anything even vaguely sexist. So I don't actually think it's as large a part of his character as people right now make it out to be. Let's just see where the show is going with all the arcs, it might be terrible, it might be amazing; it's just too early to tell.

@@Casutama Yup, Sokka’s sexism was very childish and on-the-nose, and also took the form of very occasional quips. Them toning it down ”because it wouldn’t work as well in live action” (yes, the showrunners thus implied it worked in the cartoon, it didn’t just ‘go over their heads’ that ATLA portrayed sexism as bad lmao) still leaves room for him to be prejudiced when it comes to Suki; but even if not, it really isn’t that much of a core character arc for him. His sexism was completely dropped in episode 4, and his sexist past didn’t come into play at all in the Northern Water Tribe arc. I actually don’t even think ATLA tackled sexism that well in the NWT arc, since Pakku seemingly changed overnight without a real trigger. He remained sexist through his fight with Katara, then afterwards came the revelation that Katara’s grandmother fled to the south to escape the arranged marriage. Cut to the next day and Katara shows up to training, and he’s just like “you’re late.”

Sokka being sexist is 1) not being removed and 2) not actually that integral to Sokka’s character development. First of all, it was never stated that Sokka’s sexism is being completely cut. They said it is being toned down and approached in a different way. And that makes sense. They can portray the same message without the whole “my sister sews my clothes” stuff. This show is aimed at a more mature audience and they don’t have to feed us themes with blatantly stated misogyny, which is usually not how it works in the real world either. These issues are deep-rooted, masked with insecurity, and more shadowed than what the original ATLA series showed. Additionally, it does not make up that much of Sokka’s character growth. It was maybe a 4-5 episode bit that ended as abruptly as it started. It ended with him respecting and falling in love with Suki. This can be done in other ways or even the same way without the misogyny and be fine. In my opinion, Sokka’s growth has more to due with finding his place in the world as a nonbender surrounded by powerful people. He’s snarky, he’s insecure, and the troubles he overcomes, including his sexism, all stem from that insecurity.

(Not saying the original show is badly written at all, it holds up incredibly well, but it's still a product of its time) Let's just see where the show is going with all the arcs, it might be terrible, it might be amazing; it's just too early to tell.

Pretty much everyone who worked on it is a huge fan of the original and they have paid attention to the details such as most of the main cast being champion martial artists etc. also the fact that the original first season is 20 episodes and this one is only 8, its inevitable that they are going to have to cut some things out unfortunately. you people should stop pretending that you're fans of the original show. Sokka was sexist for literally 4 episodes of season 1. After that, it disappears. So no it's not a huge character arc or super important to his character. His insecurity as a non-bender and wanting to prove himself as a warrior is the bigger arc. Also, a common critque of season 1 is that sokka was kind of an asshole for those first few episodes. I love the show and agree. It got annoying quickly. It's like, we get it you're sexist you don't have to be so over the top about it. In order for kids to grasp what sexism is, perhaps the og writers purposefully did this. But as adults, we don't need all those comments to get that sokka is sexist. The show writers said they're TONING DOWN his sexism not completely getting rid of it. People just see two lines and assume the worst without ACTUALLY READING WHAT ALBERT KIM SAID. I've watched nearly every reactor on youtube react to this show and a common theme that comes up is that people dislike sokka for the first few episodes. Not because he was sexist but because he was annoying over the top asshole half the time.

Live action adaptations are so stupid to begin with. When you jump into live action you have such a higher level of suspension of disbelief to clear. Even the ones that are actually watchable look goofy as hell. Like in Netflix's One Piece, every time Luffy did anything gummy it looked fucking dumb.

I think it looks like it could be great still 🤷♂️ I think just don’t care that much if Sokka thinks girls shouldn’t be good at anything. Like I understand he has a growing moment but that’s like a d-f storyline compared to the rest of the series. Plus I think Sokka has a lot more lessons to learn than just that girls can do things and kick a$$ too. Everyone should just wait to see if it is any good. ALSO THE CREATORS LEAVING THE SHOW COULD MEAN VARIOUS DIFFERENT THINGS. My guess Netflix did not want to make a shot for shot recreation and wanted to shorten and tighten up the story and they weren’t cool with cutting something. Or they were not good with budgeting stuff and were sick of Netflix having to micromanage. Nobody actually knows the reasons as far as I’m aware. If you are that upset about no misogyny just don’t watch it 🤷♂️. But to me this all just feels like people searching for a reason to hate it and this seems like a pretty decent excuse to start the hate campaign for and create views and content about the show being terrible hyping up the hate brigade. If the show sucks then dang that sucks because the trailers had me excited. But to me not having misogyny is a complete none issue.

In light of recent news on this im calling it right now. A bunch of the writers on this pry arent even fans and are just going to hikack this ip to make their own story that just takes place in the bender world. So dumb, this was a low effort slam dunk. Could have just made a shot for shot remake and expand on it a bit. Bring in the original writers and let them just add to dialogue. Draw out the fight scenes a bit more and boom you made a 15 min beloved cartoon into a 40min show. Keep all the character arcs and all the silliness dont make it a dark drama world war story. Just give the fans control and give them what they want. This will be ok but it could have been amazing. Fucking netflix and their endless army of idealistic writers that love to destroy things people love to shove their ideas into the world. Also the production on this looks sterile and way too expensive. These kids look like they just bought new clothes and had a spa day in every shot. Theyre literally supposed to be camping in the wilderness every night for months on end. And the sokka toxic masculinity arc is basically the deffinition of teaching kids to treat women as equals. Removing it does the opposite of their reasoning behind removing it. How tf do these people have jobs when they keep fucking up these shows like this?

I like ATLA but interacting with the fanbase made me re-evaluate whether it was a masterpiece. I mean, it _is_ toned down anime, right down to the storylines.

What do you mean by toned down?
@withlove31210 ай бұрын
@@veganandatheist e.g. Zuko he gets cited as a "redemption arc done right" but he didn't do anything too wrong or else everyone would've been against it. And like I said this kind of storyline (chakras, element based martial systems) are pretty common to anime.

@@withlove312 Avatar is not about elements or chakras. It was a medium to shape the values, morals and understanding of a generation of young minds. It was simple yet conveyed meaningful messages and complex issues. Shows like Avatar, Boondocks and One Piece helped me share these ideas with my daughter and helped open the space up for conversation, you'd be surprised how helpful that is as a parent. Not to mention, the inspiration from Asian and Indigenous cultures and history, whether it be Ba Sing Se (Qing Dynasty) or the Fire Nation (Imperial Japan), or the Air Nomads (Tibetan and Chinese Buddhist Monks) alongside the Gurus (Indian Buddhists) etc. Even the bending itself is representative of martial arts culture, and is simply an extension of your self. That is what Legend of Korra failed to understand, and that is what this show seems to be destined to fail to understand. Zuko broke the cycle of violence, he shed his insecurities, and he atoned for crimes as a colonizer by engaging in efforts of decolonization. In doing so he proves he is a stronger and better leader than his father ever was. He shows his people that decolonization not only empowers the oppressed but also helps them (the people of the fire nation) as well. That is a redemption arc.

@@ghostbravo7127 What a bizarre counter. "its not about chakras" Dude. What I'm saying is the tropes, mythology and themes they use are things anime and other Eastern storytelling has been doing for a long, _long_ time. Which you yourself then go on to cite. Zuko is a good character but hes also a toned down kid friendly version of other tropes which is why its easy to swallow. Replies are ridiculous. Take the weird fandom goggles off guys holy crap I'm not saying ATLA is bad. This is what I mean when I saw online fans make me reconsider the show in a worst light.
