In 2007, a group of people came to our cosmetology school from the cruise line and talked about how wonderful it would be to travel abroad and get paid. When asking them questions, they would never get to the point and give vague answers. I thought it was suspicious that they brought agreements with them, and tried getting people to sign. These people were acting shady. I turned down the offer, not hearing anything about the business from other people. Other girls got hooked. Learning about this dark side of business makes me thank the Lord for my brain. Boy did I dodge the bullet. My intuition did not fail. Free cheese is only in a mouse trap.

There was actually a Caribbean medical school that had its students study from a cruise ship for a whole semester after the campus was destroyed by Hurricane Maria... and I was one of those students. I feel there could be a whole segment done just about just that situation as it would address the truth about for-profit schools, the detrimental conditions students had to be in, safety issues, etc. It was one of the most unprecedentedly bizarre locations for a medical school.. without proper WiFi, food, or accommodation. It’s an experience that opened my eyes to many hardships, and it’ll be interesting to see the show address it in the context of corporate greed in educational institutions..

I worked on board cruise ships as a stewardess for ten years, quit last year before the covid thing. I worked for mainstream cruiselines and also the luxury categories. What I have to say is that the salary and tips are highly attractive compared to our average wage here in Brazil. As a stewardess you can earn good money and save it too. The catch is that It`s really tough to work around 10 hours a day without a single day off for your entire contract, ranging from 4 months to 9 month contracts. After my first contract (8 months) I have to say I got really stressed due to the working routine that affects you mentally more than anything. In my first company we had 23 suites to clean twice a day, and embarkation day we were encouraged to `hire` a helper, paying from our own salaries. It was not the company policy, but most of us stewards/ess felt like we were not able to finish on time just doing everything by ourselves. It was insane, I certainly started to get mentally ill at that time, kind of burn out. We never had time for anything, I was always tired and didn’t want to go ashore, preferring to sleep. Then I quit this first company and tried to live `normal` life in here, but ship life besides all the negative side effects on my health still felt like a good option for me, a high salary, not having to cook or do the dishes, pay rent or transportation, getting to visit places you would never be there in that fucking country if it wasn't for this job, these kind of advantages.. then after three years in Brazil trying to live normal life I decided to go back, the shit is this addictive I guess. It`s like abusive relationship, you keep coming back because you haven`t realized how much this work has damaged you. You have to be psychologically strong enough to cope with ship life. I fortunately found better companies after my first experience. Crew life can be good onboard, it all depends on the cruise line and your goals in there. Do you want build a career or may be just save some money? My last two companies to work being luxury had a different approach with the guests, we weren't mere cleaners, we had to pamper the guests( mostly from US), anticipate their needs, call them by their names and lots of other duties.These companies paid your tickets, reimbursed exams and visa. They also treated crew much better than my first company and still the amount of work and pressure was enormous. After all i look back and still see the good things about working onboard, but I realize now it's about time to move on. Ship life forces you to live a double life, cuz you're always traveling, so you can never settle or think long term, that's become unbearable for me to keep going back to the ship. The money is good and I see many people who do not have better opportunities in their country working on board to survive and raise their kids. I will always miss my good friends from the ship and the places I've visited, but I can't stand working that much and losing my health again. And they definitely pollute a lot, oh god we know it, one of the companies I’ve worked for was in probation due to dumping untreated water in the sea and also got a brutal fine. And after a while they started to greenwash their product, banning plastic straws and stupid policy of asking guests to reuse towels, that’s bullshit, guests paying 10,000 per person a cruise having to cut on luxuries? They shouldn’t quit plastic bottles they should quit the whole industry if they really want to do something bout the environment. Many of my guests didn’t give a shit about environment, asking to change all sheets and towels every day or buying tons of cacaria and leaving enormous quantity of garbage behind them. This industry exists because there are rich and bored people willing to spend their money on that.

This has probably happened elsewhere in the world but very recently there was an online add that seemed to be concerned about mental health issues stemming from C19 restrictions and limitations on nearly every aspect of normal lifestyles we were long accustomed to. As a ex cruise ship security staff crew I was hurt to watch this. I worked on medium and small size ships. I'm not here to speak for those mega supersized ships. Throughout my 6 contracts every crime including theft, missing item, verbal assualt etc. were reported in our global crime recording system. Severe crimes were reported to the local authorities of our next port of call with an acknowledgment of acceptance. Edit: I checked with my superiors and they confirmed. If it's a US citizen even a natural death is reported to FBI.

My dad almost drown in a ship's pool when he was a kid. It wasn't a cruise ship, but a passenger ship going to England. It had a cold saltwater pool, he jumped in and nearly drowned from the unexpected shock. A stranger rescued him. Then, not too long after that, his dad, uncle and brother saved the lives of 5 fishermen who got caught in a flood while going fishing. The men's boat had overturned after hitting a bridge after a heavy rain.

I went on a carnival cruise and asked my room service when they would be off again, and they in 6 months. I almost passed out, and immediately felt guilty for having a hand in normalized slavery. If you do take another cruise complain about tips and gratuity added to your bill. State you would like to tip your servers yourself or you have already tipped them. AND GIVE THE MONEY DIRECTLY TO THEM VERSES CARNIVAL or whatever cruise line your on, they only get crumbs of the actually tips you pay, majority of it goes right back to the cruise ship instead of the employees.

I don’t know the exact details of the employees hours, but as the comment above said, 6 months on and 6 months off is common. Usually the crews have set hours and of course you have to realize that the food, lodging and amenities are also included. The capatain and engineers also are running similar schedules. Of course they get more money but their responsibility is much higher and if you screw up, well, its not good.

This is bad advice. The cruise line I work for takes none of the gratuities on your bill. none. If you take off the auto gratuities and give cash yourself, you're screwing over the crew members. Sure, you can give your favorite crew members cash if you want, but the gratuities over your bill get split to the crew members that you don't see or notice. Like the guys cleaning the tables on the lido deck, or the assistants prepping and delivering food.

My oldest niece worked for one of these cruise lines on the Bahamas run. She was listed as the Children's Activity Director. My niece is currently 28 almost 29. This was about 3-4 years ago. She is rather tall, naturally blonde and drop dead beautiful. As some of my former students said when they saw pictures of our family, she looks like a Playmate lol (almost smacked him for that one lol). She had another female crew member for a roommate on board. From what I gather, many of the crew members spend a lot of their so-called free time 'hooked up' lol My poor niece lost a lot of sleep because of her roommate lol. She also spent more time dodging kid's father's with hungry looks and the idea that she was part of the amenities offered by the Cruise Line. We all thought she had a great job. Working with kids of a major cruise line, in the Bahamas, in the summer, young, single attractive, mid-20's young lady.......... She quit after a couple months and after we heard the horror stories we all agreed with her. Not only is crime tolerated, ignored but there is almost no protection for the female crew members. I expect if these cruise lines could get by with it, they would add 'special services' to the menu for passengers. I expect many of the good-looking young men get hit on at least as much by the older women, but I also expect most of them see it as more of a perk- getting laid and possibly getting money or expensive gifts in return. But from other stories and some research, female crew members, especially the better looking ones become more targets for horny male passengers than crew members trying to make a living and be polite/friendly while doing so in hopes of a better tip just like any waitress in a restaurant. Cruise lines can be flagged in any country just as many cargo ships are and have been for as long as nations have been trading by sea. Warships and military/LEO vessels must be flagged with the nation they serve There does need to be an international law or set of laws dealing with the high seas and territorial waters. If a ship is in a nations territorial waters then that nation should be able to let LEO's stepp in and let the ambassadors/consuls play their games. In international waters it should fall under the UN's laws. The UN could require member states to 'supply' some patrol boats/light war ships to act in their name for part of the year. Countrie in the Pacific could provide ships for the Pacific, Indian oceans and the various seas and such. Nations with coasts in the Atlantic ocean, the Med, the North sea, etc... provide them there. They not need loads of ships, but with the speed of modern ships today even just a few ships could make a difference. The crews could wear the blue helmets/caps, they would have all police powers on the high seas. Criminals would be judged by a UN court if the charges were serious enough, otherwise the UN could choose to turn over the criminals to the nation of the victim to be charged and tried. Also believe it or not, there are still pirates out there. They hijack boats, rob ships, kill people sometimes. There is very little done about them if they operate in international waters.The UN needs more muscle The predecessor of the United Nations was the League of Nations, established in 1919, after World War I, under the Treaty of Versailles "to promote international cooperation and to achieve peace and security." Despite some early successes, the League of Nations was not able to prevent World War II. As of 20 April 1946, the League of Nations ceased to exist, having handed over all of its assets to the United Nations, and having granted the new UN Secretariat full control of its Library and archives. As World War II was about to end in 1945, many nations were in ruins, and the world was exhausted from 2 World Wars within 30 years. Representatives of 50 countries gathered at the United Nations Conference on International Organization in San Francisco, California in a meeting that ran from 25 April to 26 June 1945. For the next two months, they proceeded to draft and then sign the UN Charter, which created a new international organization, the United Nations, which, it was hoped, would prevent another world war like the one they had just lived through. Yes, Royal Caribbean and their subsidiary brands can lock you in your room. It's not something that's done haphazardly -- It's only done if you're about to be removed from the ship (e.g. you're being arrested) or you're being confined for medical purposes to keep disease/illness from spreading when you have a confirmed case of the flu or gastrointestinal illness. Most new ships don't have a brig/jail -- You get confined to your room with security posted outside.

Back in July, I saw many cruise vessels docked in the waters surrounding Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas. It was pretty unsightly. All the passengers exited to sightsee on resort grounds, crowding the restaurants/casino. Just as you shouldn't take a cruise's facade at face value, you shouldn't take a comedy show's take on cruises at face value. The truth is much more complicated than what Hasan is pushing. Some examples: Take his "low wages" argument. Average income in the Philippines is $3k. Cruise lines start them at twice that while dropping their living expenses to basically nothing. No-one is forcing Filipinos to take these jobs; they *want* them. If these cruise jobs went away, that would be a very bad thing for them. Take the "murder is easy" argument. This is a classic red herring. It sounds like something awfully important, but it doesn't really happen. On the legal side of things, crime reporting gets complicated, but people don't generally go on cruises and commit crimes. As for the sexual assault/groping incidents mentioned, those are awful, of course. That said, he provides no meaningful statistics about how likely you are to have your kids groped on a cruise ship vs all the other places where kids get abused on places that aren't cruise ships. Take the "OMG kids are drowning" argument where he talks about a 5-year-old kid who drowned in an unsupervised pool. There's a good argument to be made for having lifeguards. That said, most ships have some not-small signs saying that you swim at your own risk, and that children should never swim un-supervised. I would never let a 5-year-old child of mine swim un-supervised even with lifeguards on duty, nor would I take a 5-year-old on a cruise in the first place. Take his point about sulphur dioxide. This is a legitimate point, but the comparison is somewhat suspect. Cruise ships tend to cruise out at sea and emit most of their sulpher dioxide out there, where there aren't a lot of people. Sulphur dioxide is chemically reactive, meaning that unless you have a lot of people living very close and downwind of the exhaust tubes producing it, they're not breathing it in. This is why there's been a big push to reduce the sulphur content in car fuels. At sea, this chemical has much more space to dissipate and dilute to safe levels. This is still a problem, but it's not as bad as Hasan makes it out to be. Hasan's take on cruises is entertaining, and there are actually some good points in there, but the view he presents suggests that his research was an exercise in confirmation bias in support of a hatchet job rather than a credible attempt to understand what he's criticizing. His NYC-centric worldview gives him a distorted view of this topic and the people involved, and he seems more interested in presenting outrage than truth.

All that said, here are some personal criticisms I have of cruise lines: 1. They pack too many people on the big ships. This makes it hard to get seats to the shows and turns boarding and disembarking into a giant cattle drive through one or two narrow hatches. You'll be standing in line for a lot of crap. If you can, choose to cruise on smaller ships. 2. There are a lot more "extra fee" services and activities on ships than there used to be. You don't have to use them (and I suggest you don't in general), but they take up a larger portion of the ship than they used to. 3. Every port of call includes a giant tourist trap with overpriced crappy tourist stuff, and you have to walk a good half mile or so to get through it after you leave the ship. Roatan is so bad that you have to pay $40 bucks per person just to get away from the tourist trap and go to a town where people actually live. All that said, I still love cruises for a lot of reasons, including: 1. Unless you dine in one of their extra fee restaurants, the food is all included and very good quality. 2. You don't have to do your dishes, make your bed, or do any chores. 3. You can get away from it all and unplug from your phone and email. 4. The scenery changes, and many of the sights / ports are worth seeing (especially on Alaska and European cruises). 5. The weather is generally awesome, especially if you're escaping winter to go on a tropical cruise. 6. There are plenty of things to do if you want to stay busy. 7. You don't have to do much of anything except show up for the lifeboat drill and get off at the end.

Woah. I'm from Ukraine. Lots of Ukrainians work on cruise ships. I myself considered taking the job. You must work 10+ hours every day without days off. Contracts are 6-8 months long. And if you're a first timer, you often have to buy your plane ticket to the port of boarding with your own money. That's just insane. Oh yes, the salary. I was looking for a position of a waitress. So it's around 900 bucks fixed per month plus tips (approx. 500$). So you earn around 1500 bucks but you'll be imprisoned. And the saddest thing of all is that we agree to do this because in Ukraine average salary is 300 bucks a month. Pathetic

Let's pretend that you have obligations back home like a family to support, and have to send $300 per month home also. You have virtually no living expenses on the ship, so anything else you spend is mostly optional. And if it's your first time your gonna drop $600 on a plane ticket from Kyiv to Tampa. So after 6 months you return home having paid all of your bills at home and you have $6600 dollars in your pocket. That's almost 2 years of average salary. Even if you live in Kyiv where the average salary is $700 you still end up coming home with $4200 which is enough to live off of for 6 months. You could either spend 6 months at home chilling with your family, or kick start a business. This still sounds like an amazing economic opportunity. To put this into perspective for Americans. The median monthly wage in the US is $3,900. If a cruise line was offering almost $20,000 a month to work on a cruise ship would you take it? That's almost $250,000 a year. That puts you well into the top 10% of earnings in the US. Doctors and lawyers would be quitting their professions to go work on cruise ships. I'd let them lock me up in a dog kennel and eat kibble for 6 months for that kind of money! 😅

But there are some other financial issues that have to be dealt with before departing, of course, like medical checkup, US visa, etc. On average, you need 1000-1500 dollars to get you set for work on a cruise ship. One-bedroom apartment in Kyiv can cost from 50 to 70K US dollars, so roughly you have to complete up to ten contracts to buy it. But again, you are absolutely right - lots of people opt for the grind.

Former Disney Crew Member here. I loved that this was made into an entire episode because none of this information is being talked about enough/at all and is definitely being suppressed. Add in the gross environmental cost due to pollution and I really can't see why anyone would want to waste thousands of dollars on a "vacation."

What's even more scary is that a lot of huge companies pay literally 0 percent. Amazon, I believe GE, and quite a few more.

Their logic is "My 2% is $200mil and my workers 20% is $500 WHY AM I PAYING MORE?"

I worked waiting tables for Norwegian Cruise Lines. The ship was a US ship, we got $13 an hour plus overtime pay. I worked with many foreigners, they were amazing people and great coworkers. I'm so glad to see this feature. If you go on a cruise, please be kind to the staff and tip.

How much of the tacked on "Gratuity Bill" actually goes to the workers? My first cruise in coming up, and they want like 400 dollars, including for a child. My Mom wants to pay tips in cash herself (she's just old-school, and prefers cash so it's not as traceable, I guess she always thinks she's giving tax benefits to people.) So I was thinking about paying for me and my wife's ($200), and then paying cash tips here and there as well. I heard they usually add it on some foods and all drinks anyway. What's your opinion on this as a worker?

@@notosure2148 your gratuities are going in offshore accounts of the cruise company. Only tips in cash which you give stealthily into the hand of the staff, while nobody watching, especially his manager, can be accepted

Actually no do not behave feeding into the tippy and because the tipping is being used in order for the cruise line not to actually pay their wages out-of-the-money you've already paid
