If you haven't seen the movie something the Lord made, I suggest you watch it, because it tells different aspects of Vivian and Alfred's collective stories, and it's frankly one of the only televised medical productions that I don't nitpick at, because I used to work in emergency medicine. Vivian was a prodigy, and a very humble man. I wish people were made of that same material these days...

I just dnt understand why we want to erase the damaged we did to African Americans let's look past the blame they are not blaming us for what happens what they are doing is asking us to do better for them. We owe them that period I wasn't there back in the day but i fee like I need to do better today period. It's upsetting to watch this seriously

They must've had a pretty good relationship, as they probably both knew that they couldn't get him a decent salary at the time. I don't think most people would go so far to make sure their colleague could make ends meet at the time, and under those circumstances. Progress is made step by step, and the fact that he had at least one colleague who respected his skill, is one better than none. I'm glad he has gotten the recognition he deserved, even if it was after the fact. It takes time, and time passes slowly, but eventually it does pass.

And not mentioniy his contributions and taking sll the accolades....? If I was making so much more than somebody I needed for my greatest accomplishment I would give them part of my salary

This is actually quite unfair to Blalock. He actually pushed quite hard to have Vivian advanced to the positions he was. Including pushing for a higher salary than the other janitors. The odd jobs he gave Vivian wee actually paid super well to compensate. They had a very professional relationship and Blalock actually saw all the potential in Vivian no one else saw. That's why he brought Vivian everywhere. He admired and respected him

I would agree. He was already an esteemed doctor in the field before Thomas came along apparently. I prefer the movie "Something the Lord has made" as a more balanced representation of the story.

This makes Dr. Blalock look like he just took advantage of Dr. Thomas, when I don’t think Dr. Thomas would agree. If you want the rest of the story, it is a bit more touching and humble. At first it is true the only way they could figure out how to increase the salary that “looked acceptable” was to hire him as the bar tender, but later Dr. Blalock found a way for John Hopkins to double his salary. I wish this was included. Dr. Blalock was a great researcher and taught Mr. Thomas (not Dr. At the time and only 19 when hired). Without each other those patient lives could not be saved. This is a great story of two men finding passion in science and respect for life which is far nobler than the petty false pretense of racial superiority; they were saving lives despite (and finding ways to survive through) the racial tensions of their times, when both were at risk for their relationship. They respected each other more than this shows; also their first surgery was on a baby. They fixed the hearts of blue babies with tetralogy of fallot. Read Dr. Thomas’ autobiography. Or read: www.washingtonian.com/2020/06/19/the-remarkable-story-of-vivien-thomas-the-black-man-who-helped-invent-heart-surgery/ to get a more complete story.

The idea that Blalock who was the chief of surgery at Johns Hopkins was an idiot is also wrong. Blalock was not a great technical surgeon but was a great leader and researcher who was involved in many studies, which I learned in medical school. Thomas could have been a fine surgeon though I wonder if he alone would have been so innovative. Anyway, maybe Blalock deserves a kick in the ass for not treating Thomas as he should. And Thomas has finally gotten his just due.
