Very underrated film. I really think years from now this will be looked at as a Cinematic masterpiece that, sadly, did not get anywhere near the recognition that it deserved. It plays almost as an extension of Mean Streets, Goodfellas and Casino and really feels like a moving and powerful Grand Finale to all of Scorsese’s Mob epics. Don’t let it’s slow pace put you off - this is an absolute Masterwork from one of the greatest artists in the history of Cinema.

I watched or read an interview where he explains ge doesn't believe on "director's cuts" as to him once a movie finishes post production and is released to theaters, that's the movie that it will always be. He also mentioned something about it being kind of petty for a director to ask for a director's cut DVD/Blue Ray when they didn't care enough to ask that from the start. And frankly, I think Scorsese is one of the few directors who always makes the movie his own, not caring about numbers and big box offices, just an artistic vision true to himself.

I notice people trashing the movie, saying it's an average Scorsese and not as good as Goodfellas or Casino. The truth is that this isn't Goodfellas or Casino. Although Scorsese set an antiquated macho mob world as a palette, he was going for a more poignant testament to an evanescing chapter of the American history, which then slowly transitions into a moody, meditative examination of friendship and betrayal, and ends as an ode to time. It is quietly immersive and gripping. I think it is a masterful piece of filmmaking, which only takes a true master like Scorsese to make. Embrace these movies as you won't be seeing the kind much in the future.
