Im not mad that the writers showed a realistic end to their relationship. This season really does reflect how once you enter adulthood the magic is kindof lost. I just wish they had showed them having a good romantic relationship for even a second before it ended.

This is exactly my point of view. A lot of drama writers think that it’s not acceptable to have any couple be happy and healthy together for more than an episode or two. As according to them it’s “boring”. But if you’ve spent 3 seasons hyping them up, we will NOT be bored by seeing them be a happy couple together.

I think the ending they gave to this show was controversial, yet brave and very beautiful. Maeve's letter shows how great of a character Otis is, and how he changed her, which is really comforting in my opinion: to see someone who suffers so much during the entire series to finally find herself (she even manages to say "I love you" at the end, which is huge for a character like her). Nevertheless, after seeing this video, I have realized how both the first (s3) and the second time (s4) Maeve considers staying in Moordale with Otis and not going to America she is immediately encouraged not to do so, but to go follow her dreams. This was first done by Aimee, a very powerful character during the entire show, who makes Maeve realize how a boy can't be the reason why she doesn't go to America. Later on, in late season 4, it's Jean Milburn who acts as a mom and advises Maeve to go back to America to finish her course. In my opinion, individually, both arguments given by Aimee and Jean are very valid and might work for the majority of the people. But, based on the development of the characters during the show, I don't think Maeve and Otis would have spit, and here's why: Maeve shows many times during the last two seasons how she wants to stay with Otis even if she "feels the best version of herself" in America, even to the point of telling Otis that she wants to stay with him. From Otis's perspective, he supports her decision knowing it will crush him, even if he has fought for Maeve's love since episode 1. What I'm trying to say is that it felt like their story wasn't a common relationship between teenagers: IT FELT FORCED TO SEE THEM PART WAYS and not choose to stay together. It's clear how the writers make Maeve prioritize her career in America, which ironically felt not right for the character they created: Someone who "got her heart cracked open" and realized she found the person she loves, and who made her discover what love is about. What feels natural to me after getting to know the characters of Maeve and Otis for so long, is them putting themselves in front of everything else, and making sure they will make it work as a couple. So, to conclude, it felt more like a script decision rather than what the actual characters would have chosen, and that bothers me. I don't personally agree with the fact that love must be put into doubt and set aside. And I understand how important it is to be ambitious, and how sacrifices must be done sometimes. But isn't going all in for the person you love the most ambitious thing to do?

I guess the whole problem with forced breakup is mainly the lack of a proper on-screen relationship between Maeve and Otis in s3-s4. To get to the point where love is not everything and one should pursue their own dreams and be ready to sacrifice something, you need to come a long way while actually being together (like in Normal People). How else can writers make such a bittersweet ending count? But there are so many obstacles in their relationship so it doesn't even have an opportunity to blossom properly. Did we really need a ton of new bland background characters instead of proper Motis dynamics? Personally don't think so. And many other character arcs also suffered because of that...

Each season, we have had had Otis say “of course” to Maeve at least once. Season 1 - 1:35 (One of, if not the most iconic line in the entire series) Season 2 - 3:32 Season 3 - 6:19 Season 4 - NOTHING These words might seem like nothing, just two words, but it’s a cue word, a running theme since the beginning, a testament of Maeve and Otis’ friendship and relationship. The fact that the writers for Season 4 didn’t have Otis not even ONCE say those words to Maeve was just disappointing. For 3 seasons we’ve watched Motis be built up and I felt like Season 4, especially the ending, just ignored all of what happened and torn it all down 😔

That ending just fookin hurt. It cracked my heart open and now it'll forever be cracked. Dickhead ending.

@@Mengao2009 god damn, well firstly thank you for telling me this. Secondly I was okay with everything you quoted till the last bit. That shit just breaks my heart even more. Does she get off on making characters just to break the viewers hearts? If we were gonna see then reunite in the future it should be a happy ending type thing. Otherwise don’t do it at all. We don’t wanna see them bored if eachother, going through more problems. Look I respect the dedication to trying to be “realistic” that she has with the whole show. BUT she has made a major mistake. The vast majority of the 85 million fans of this show HATED watching Maeve and Otis squander their precious time together, hated watching them argue if they ever did. They built the whole will they won’t they up too long, so to actually bother putting them together. Only to make it a miserable boring future, where they inevitably cheat and break up. Would just be straight up fucking distasteful. I don’t know why writers can’t find a balance between harsh reality and potential positive endings. Good shit happens in real life too, sometimes people DO end up together in the long haul. It’s such a nihilistic approach to story telling and after a while you begin to hate it if not done properly

Season 4 is pure garbage. The creators decided to anger the fans of Otis and Maeve. I have no other explanation for this. It's not normal that for two seasons these two didn't have any normal scenes together like in the first season. Every time something had to happen to stop them from being happy. Just look at these beautiful scenes from the first season. The scene at the pool, the scene when Otis was waiting with flowers at the clinic, the conversation on the swings, the scene when Otis was walking Maeve home... What happened to this series? I did not understand how they could have Maeve's mother die, and Otis spends an entire fucking day sitting in a car with Aimee, instead of going in and comforting her. And they waste Emma Mackey on doing a crossword instead of writing some dialogue and just letting her talk to her boyfriend. So rubbish.

We see Aimee and Jean encouraging Maeve to follow her dreams. I would add that Otis was kind of the third person to do it. By saying that it would be very hard to keep their long-distance relationship, he let Maeve free to go. Maybe if he asked her to stay she would have done. I think the series is also about self love and self esteem, which Maeve didn’t have at all. I loved to see the characters development and growth. So, in my opinion, she did love Otis, but the real reason she thought about not going back to America was because she was afraid to fail. And as Maeve realizes her changes from inside out, she feels more confident to face it all, go for her big opportunity even though it meant leaving Otis. Because what he did for her, how he changed her crossed the romantic love line. It will forever resonates with Maeve.

Dreadful final season. Here's the thing, I don't think anyone would mind these two not ending up together after school. They both have things to achieve and we are rooting for their journeys. But let them be for a moment! They have been yearning for one another for three seasons now!! How do they only get 2 sex scenes (one being through the phone) and a couple kisses?? The writers had been building up their story since moment one just to give us a couple of scenes of them together that neither of them truly enjoyed?! First episodes - yes, they get intimate but they are not even in the same country. Later episodes - Maeve returns but is going through grief, Otis is worried that he slept in the same bed with Ruby. Then suddenly, Otis' sex issues come up again out of nowhere!! Final episode - they finally sleep together but it's their final hours together. WTH??? Also, how does the timeline make sense?! Maeve is supposed to be in America for a couple months. Doesn't she have to finish school?? How the heck is she gonna apply to universities? Or are we supposed to believe that Maeve does not care about that?? Maeve is breaking the cycle of abuse and neglect that runs in her family. She has every chance to be a first generation student and you are throwing that out of the window?! Make it make sense. When you create a complex female character, do them justice. Anyway, I feel that their relationship this season should have been conflict-free for the most part. It all felt like it was conflict for the sake of conflict...

The Conclusion of season 4 was absolutely fantastic. Love isn't about binding others. Love is about setting free. Love is about being happy for someone for who they are and where they are, unconditionally. Otis loved Maeve unconditionally. He never wanted to shackle her with his love. So when she says she wants to leave Moordale and go to America he is finally in peace with himself for doing the right thing and is able to make love to her. Season four had one of the best possible ending with terrific writing, astutely written screenplay and captivating performances. 🍻 👏

Small premise: yes, you saw correctly, there is Joffrey Baratheon in a couple of episodes. For me, Sex Education represents a little gem in the serial panorama (obviously in the teen drama context, we are certainly not talking about Twin Peaks) as it tells the world of sex with all its facets within an adolescent community in an innovative and entertaining way. . The first two seasons were very well written (undoubtedly with all the narrative lightness that a product of this kind can have) and the characters were well characterized. In the third season the decline begins and the first important fractures arrive in the script, truly mediocre in many situations, until it leads to this last part of the work which I found hasty and very didactic (especially the theme of inclusiveness, of course quite right , but too redundant and forced to be cloying, ditto for the topic of faith) in dealing with events (political correctness is also excessive). I believe that this approximation is also due to the desire of many actors in the cast to want to distance themselves from their characters for a perfectly understandable question of "working maturity", in fact I found many of them lacking in part and distant from the more "lively" interpretations of the first two seasons. It certainly won't be the primary cause but it contributed to speeding up the writing, which I repeat I found terrible in many aspects of the plot and in the development of relationships, on the part of the author. As regards the ending between the two protagonists, I can agree with it: reality is often disappointing and distance can be the cause of a separation even though a relationship is important and profound (I have had a similar experience firsthand), perhaps too extreme in staged with a "clean" farewell on the part of both when trivially a call is enough to get in touch but necessary to avoid suffering caused by a relationship that cannot continue (final scene of the letter however very emotionally impactful, one of the few good things). I would certainly have preferred the narrative arc of the two characters to end on a high note or to have an open epilogue that would let the viewer understand a probable future rapprochement between the two. Regarding the final act of the other supporting actors, I was quite indifferent. For some, all things considered, it may be fine, for others it really isn't, at least there is a character and psychological evolution, however at the end of the viewing there remains in general a feeling of incompleteness and of " belly not full”. Note of merit to the soundtrack, the songs recovered from the 70s/80s/90s are fantastic and blend perfectly within the entire series: in this last season Jim Croce's beautiful piece "I got a name" certainly stands out already used in the past by Tarantino in Django Unchained, leaving out the most iconic songs, special mention also for "Pale Blue Eyes" by "The Velvet Underground", a wonderful song, "The Promise" by "When in Rome" (both used in the second season) and the magnificent “Let It be” by “Aretha Franklin” used in the season finale. I conclude by saying that Sex Education gave Emma Mackey the opportunity to make herself known to the general public, a woman who, in addition to being a wonderful actress, is also an incredible actress.

I understand that few people know about this, but Laurie gave a recent interview (for THR) and she categorically stated that one of the first certainties she had from the beginning was that both of them (Otis and Maeve) would not end up together at the end of the series, and despite I hate this fact, it was there the whole time and it was only us spectators who didn't notice. Laurie also said that it's very "hard to meet your soulmate at 17." And that Otis and Maeve need to mature more individually, and when asked about the future of the Sex Education/Moordale universe, she said that she intends to rest for a while but that if she were to do a spinoff of the series it would be about Otis and Maeve 10 years in the future (of the series) together as a couple, married and "bored".

ANYONE ON BOARD for a SEX EDUCATION NETFLIX SPECIAL in a few years or so??? Although I can except the ending as heartbreaking as it is and see that this is a somewhat cruel but beautiful and honest ending to a very loveable and intelligent show, I still believe there is more story to tell about Otis and Maeve. I get, that as they are now they cannot and will not be together, but what about them in a couple of years? In a (example) 2-hour-special Netflix could show us how both of them have evolved, how their lives have changed for better or worse and how they might or might not fit in the end. A huge opportunity to make a sort of 'Class Reunion' and also show how all the other characters have evolved aswell, what turns they took in live etc. - including characters we didn't see in Season 4! I know that people who feel like they're ment to be sometimes don't end up with one another (had to learn this myself) - that is the somewhat realistic approach. But also: people drawn to one another over and over again (in such early age) have the potential to feel this pull towards each other throughout their later years aswell (also learned that). I mean they didn't just fight for 4 seasons to be together, they stumbled into each other repeatedly even tough all odds worked against them at times. They just couldn't help themselves! COME ON Netflix!!! Maeve took Otis' tshirt - the one we saw first in season 1 episode 3 - which he wore first when his feelings for Maeve had awakened. Her having this tshirt now and still wearing it at times is such a good symbolism to further weave an enduring story. Just let some time pass and show-wise this seems like a legitimate decision. I mean ANYONE can see the potential. What happened to the Milburns? Did Otis become a Therapist? His dad is also in America - might there be a job opportunity for Otis? One that he might not want to except because of problems with his father, but one that also might bring him closer to Maeve again? What happend to Elsie, Maeve's little sister? How is Eric's life as a pastor? What's with Adam, the Groffs, Ruby, Aimee&Isaac, Ola&Jakob, Lily, Jackson, Cal, Viv, Anwar&Olivia, Sean, Rahim, O, Conner and on and on... and Kyle? What happened??! You get the point. ✌️ :) I'll stop now.

I'm torn. Was hoping they would find a way in the end. But, I think that the writers of this awesome show have left it up to us to write the final script. Otis's stare out the window was either the realization that is was over or one of hope. I would like to believe it was the latter.

What would’ve been better: season 1 remains the same, Maeve and Otis get together at the end of season 2 after they sort out their feelings, we see them learn and grow together as they navigate the complexity of relationships, and in season 4 we see Maeve needing to pursue the opportunity in America and they have to break up because distance will not work, with a lingering sense that they may still someday give it another try when the time is right

There's something so serene about the ending, that drone shot of Otis' house and whole Moordale combined with the Let it Be music. We see Otis for the first time just being calm about the situation. He's no longer simping for Maeve and he finally found peace about letting her go. don't think Otis should've ended up with Maeve or ruby because that's not how life is. There are people who we share incredible bonds with that leave our lives. I know most people don't like the ending but think Otis and Maeve served their purpose to one another. They made each other better, they may not be together but the love will always be there. It's really about the journey, not the destination. That's life, some people are not meant to stay in our lives forever but they sure have a lasting impact that stays with us ❤️❤️❤️
