The only measurement that really matters is the actual signal. This is the RSRP shown in the network. You went from -103db to -100db. "Perfect" is -40 and you will consistently drop signal at -118. a +3db increase is probably reasonable for a cheap antenna. If you went with a higher end antenna, you might get +10db. In my location, I am at -115 without an antenna, so a +3 isn't enough to bring me to where I want to be. Thanks for posting! I've been enjoying your videos and learning from them!

external antenna "to improve performance". Actually no, it's not to improve performance, because the device has a 4x4 mimo internally, and you'd only be able to connect a 2x2 external mimo, which will be lower-performance. The reason you use an external antenna is to increase range, when signal is marginal, by putting an antenna up in a high position. A better test will be to put the device in a 'bad' location, where it's inside a box, and doesn't get good signal. Then hook up the antennas in a 'good' location, by a window or on top of the roof. Then you will see a much better performance due to getting a better signal. Thanks for sharing.

Do u happen to know what your dB and ASU ranges were before u started and after? My dB range right now is -60 I don't know how much better than that I can hope for. Just really wish I could get my numbers up a little higher cause I'm only like 2.5-3 miles from the closest tower. Thanks for the video and any help

@unleasheth5 жыл бұрын
@@Snowman1875 they definitely help they came in today. My signal is now -1dB and 99ASU but..... Speeds are up just not as high as I had hoped for. It's like 15-18 download upload is kinda the same where it was maybe a little lower. I think I'm gonna go outside and reposition the outside antenna on the pole with no modem or router etc plugged up inside. Only the weboost powered up and my phone right beside the antenna to get the exact and proper signal for this damn thing. I still think most of my issues are coming from AT&T from having a NAT type 3 double Nat. I have watched tutorials and how tos over everything imagineable to fix this. Getting to the point where I'm about to get it "good enough" and leave this bitch laying where she sits cuz it's driving me fucking bonkers. Short answer by all means the antennas def work for sure. But in my case I'm just not so sure I would ever be able to get the boost high enough to make the Nat issues stop being so annoying with stuff I'm trying to do. I have ran down so many networking blogs and could almost have a damn degree in networking by now I swear, all from this one damn issue!!!! It is frustrating to have such great signal and reception but not able to pickup higher numbers I see others get with my same setup. Until I can pull those numbers I won't be fully convinced that speed isn't still playing an issue on my network therefore correcting some of the Nat stuff alone, if it were running at say 25-30mbps instead of 12-15ish. And the thing is, I know it's capable of putting out more because I was in my truck the other day driving a few miles from where I live picking up off a different tower and the numbers shot up to 35 download. With no weboost amp or antenna or router! Just the m1 modem router by itself!! What fucking gives? The only guess I have as far as if it's signal related prob or not, is that u can boost signal and amp it up all you want but if its bad signal or not facing directly at the tower closest to u, u can boost and amp the numbers all u want it won't matter. In other words I am wondering if by chance I'm getting a false/positive reading if this makes sense. I have someone coming over now to help me readjust and watch dB readings as we speak
@unleasheth5 жыл бұрын
@@Snowman1875 update: so I found out sure enough it was a false positive. Signal/reception can be amazing but limited to A) your towers output and/or your ISP output and limitations and B) not only the distance from u are from your closest tower but also the overall distance your setup is from your outside antenna. I swapped out the RG6 for some RG11 cable and that made a huge difference. Also I faced the antenna pad directly towards the tower regardless of the numbers being better in another direction. This moved me an entire quarter turn on the pole. Make sure the modem is in LTE only mode. Make sure DHCP is enabled on the modem and off on the router. Me personally I left upnp enabled on both. Especially upnp #2 on modem. Assign the IP of your router into the DMZ of your modem in my case 192.168.0.1 leave wifi enabled on router and disabled on modem even if using Ethernet to all. Put distance on modem to long for wifi I tried all three and get a little better results with that one. VPN passthrough off on modem and dlna on for modem. I'm finally getting 23-25ish download. The only reason I believe it doesn't hold solid is cause the fucking ts9 to sma adapters I got for my antennas are bunk and won't hold my antennas to my modem. Have better ones on the way. Beware don't order the $5 adapters on Amazon. The gold ones. Because of the AT&T Nat we are behind it'll never be perfect but it's so much better now than it ever has been. Plus being behind two routers plus the AT&T Nat actually means we are triple Natted. In all honesty if I had it to redo over I would have went with something like an XR500 router that would make life much easier. And even though Nat may still be there it would have been much much much less noticeable with one of those from all I am seeing and hearing online about them The absolute best thing about the m1 nighthawk is the chip in it which can crank out (accept) the 1gig speeds and I guess upnp 2 depending on what you're doing. Other than that it's just another hotspot device with some nice other little features that I prob won't use anyhow

That $16 would likely double for each antenna.
@bitrot424 жыл бұрын
In theory, using two antennas allows the router to do "2x2 MIMO" for higher speeds. In practice, there are a lot of variables that make it unclear how much it helps. Note that the Nighthawk has four built-in antennas, allowing it to do 4x4 MIMO. If the signal strength is already pretty good, adding external antennas can actually make it slower.

Most MIMO setups require a 90 degree offset in polarization. Have you tried them in other orientations? X or t configurations and relative position to cell site?
@danr971235 жыл бұрын
I tried several positions in relation to each other and do see some positions do better than others. However, I have not tried positions other than having the antennas fully upright so maybe there are other options there.

Although this is a Cheep antennas.. they do and would under Most conditions do better thrn the inturnal antennas.. That said...,for a little more money ( especially if you can mount the antenna outside in roof pointing directly at the cel site ) but with a High Gain Diversity Mimo antenna mounted outside high and as much as line as site as possible.. then you would get both a Stronger as well as a faster connection.. Additionally.. There are an additional 2 inturnal only antennas yet you can easily modify those additional 2 antennas for running to another Diversity Mimo High gain antenna.. Thereby resukting in the FULL 4 X 4 Mimo ability of the M1 with a Cat 16 Modem

Buy the way !! Although those antennas are better then using Only the inturnal antennas... internally there are 4 antennas ( since electronics end enables a 4 x 4 mimo connection ) but 2 of the 4 inturnal antennas are hooked to 2 exturnal TS-9 antenna connections so one can add an exturnal antenna.. What isn't explained here is as Follows.. Under peal optimal performance the M1 uses a Cat 16 modem that can take advantage of 4 x 4 mimo connections through a Diversity antenna that either uses 1 cel connection and creates 2 to 4 connections to the same band ( say band 4 ) or makes 2 to 4 different connections to multible bands on cel sitesnso equiped ( possibly acessing say 2 connections to band 4 and 2 connections to band 12...or 4 seperate connections to 4 different bands at a single cel tower ) Additionally.. Besides connecting say these upgraded cheep but decent antennas... one can get what is called a Diversity mimo antenna that connects to a cel tower in both in a Vertical and in a Horizontal signal connection at same time..thereby offering and obtaining a stronger and more consistent performance/ connection to the cel tower.. Plus.. Besides the 2 exturnal TS-9 CONNECTIONS.. Internally there are 4 internal antennas so that under Optimal conditions ( close to tower with very strong signal ) those 4 antennas provide a 4 x 4 mimo connection ( more bandwidth and higher speeds ) But one can Open and do a Simple Mod to gain Access to those additional 2 internal antennas..so you can hook up exturnal antennas for now 4 antennas.. Or better yet... Hook 2 High Gain Diversity Mimo Directional antennas.... With that done then the M1 Truly Shines

I have seen the video that shows this modification but the rewards were for exotic bands that most don't use and drilling holes in the top of my unit was not really what I wanted to do to reach the other 2 antenna ports. Too bad they didn't put them in a more accessibly location. Maybe on another model where size isn't a priority for them. Their insistence to make this unit small enough to be small but not pocket size small is a conundrum. Great info if you need to access these frequencies though.

MrBOB39 I have ordered the antennas. I thought they were more expensive. They should be here in a few days. How should I place them. Far apart, near outside walls, what?,
@MrBOB395 жыл бұрын
@@jimbrannan6757 well...if you ordered the antennas that he has in his vid... they are decent ( far better then the internal ones ) however..... using the 2 exturnal ones would basically shut off the other 2 internal ( there are 4 internal antennas ).... Although using the 2 medium gain omni directional antennas can and Usually offer a Better and Stronger connection..but not always a faster connection because instead of accessing 4 x 4 mimo .. Now with the 2 external antennas give you 2 x 2 mimo connection. So.... If you are say 5 miles or further away from the towers. Then simply hook up the antennas and try spacing them at first 1 ft apart..then again try 18 inches and again at 2 ft apart...and think of it in taking a peice of paper with the 2 antennas on one side of an imaginary rectangle.. Then turn the rectangle so the empty side faces the cel tower ( that gives the best sight..given using these 2 much larger antennas compared to the internal ones.. though individually they are omni directional.. yet the 2 larger ones now throws out a semi directional pattern and therefore is best to think of those 2 antennas as on... placing them in corners of an imaginary rectangle.. with those antennas now acting as the back end of an single antenna...) If you get great reception.. then maybe end of story.. If you are less then 2 miles from the cel tower... try same way as mentioned...but then also try making a V with each antenna pointing away from the rectangle. Also try with one vertical and other Horizontal..
@MrBOB395 жыл бұрын
@@jimbrannan6757 part 2 to your question.. if you get good signal with the 2 ordered antennas and you really want to maximize use and speed.. then you need to order another 2 antennas.. and then you will need to mod the internal parts of the M1 to Enable the other 2 antenna ports to Accept exturnal antennas.. then..you can use 4 exturnal antennas.. Let me know if you need additional help

@danr971235 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Yagi antennas are great if you can aim them precisely. These antennas I used are Omni directional so no aiming is required; but if you are on the absolute edge of reception yagi will offer the best signal gain potential. Sorry the Omni did not work for your situation.
