Netherite Upgrades are GREAT for Minecraft... this is why

Just wanted to give my take on the latest controversial Snapshot 23w05a, which reworked the way you upgrade diamond tools + armour to netherite in a smithing table. Keep in mind it's just a Snapshot and Mojang uses these updates to take the community's feedback, so many things could change. I'm not arguing, but it's just wrong. The nerf's gonna lead to single players having an even tougher time getting the upgrade. Most players already don't like grinding that much, but there are many who like getting many sets of "perfect" gear they can use in different situations. The grind's gonna get tougher, and in the worst case, it'll be really annoying to get the upgrade on servers. It's just a nerf for the diamond nostalgia. This only makes the idea concrete. We're definitely getting a massive mending spawn nerf too in the near future. I'm sorry, but I enjoy not having to replace my armor and tools all the time, fearing hitting XP caps on my favorite ones. Instead of improving on the accessability of weapons like tipped arrows or lingering potions, they've decided to focus on nerfing gear upgrading, ot even looking at how enchantments are the real mvp to pvp. When they move on to enchantment nerfs, I can only fear for the worst. Instead of giving items like the hoe more usability or giving different teirs different secret enchantments and other useful factors, they've decided progression is dangerous and needs held back even more than it already is. We're used to the Netherite progression by now. Making it tougher isn't going to validate the struggle and improve your use of lower teirs, it's just going to make it more repetitive. When was the last time you used a wooden tool? Tier based rare and unique enchantments would make it better. But no, pvp and progression is what needs cracked down on, not the current uselessness of certain items. Look at the new use they gave to leather along with its coloring customization. They won't add to that or improve other items, instead they make Netherite all the more useful compared to them while making the grind to it worse. If they want to make it fun, give us new ideas Netherite can't have. I wouldn't even hate the upgrade if getting it and cloning it were easier. I never find diamonds and I always struggle in the Nether so much. For hardcore, maybe just nerf totem spawns, where they can be held, and raids if you want it to be tough.

Very true about diamonds being much easier to get these days. I mean with villager trading you can get full enchanted diamond armor and tools without even mining. There’s usually going to be pushback when you nerf an existing feature, but I agree it makes more sense this way. I’d love to see Mojang add some new features/items as well that have a high rarity like diamonds used to have. Great video, and very nice editing 👌

Thanks so much! ❤️ And yeah exactly diamonds being to easy to get meant it was absolutely necessary for a higher tier of mineral to be introduced… but I feel the process of upgrading diamond into netherite is far too simple and that’s why I’m for this new change, but I also get the pushback from some players too (could be tedious / too grind, etc) What kind of new items / features do you have in mind? Is it an ore? Something you find in chests?… Elaborate, I’m curious!👀

@@OhTyZer I think maybe very rare things with niche or purely cosmetic uses could be fun. Nothing too game changing. Sort of like how chainmail armor is neat because it’s more difficult to get. For instance, some specific biomes could occasionally spawn a zombie horse with a mount. Killing the mount has a chance of a special Viking helmet or something lol, equivalent to an iron helmet. Maybe mushroom biomes have a unique glow mushroom underground in caves that can be used as a light source. The carved sandstone of desert temples used to be uncraftable which made them special, so maybe more strange ancient blacks like that. Rubies found in certain biomes could be interesting. But definitely game changing More rare biomes would be fun too like a tropical island with palm trees and coconuts. A rare walking staff The dragon minibosses Notch used to hint at. Elytra variations maybe Basically fun stuff to flex on your friends with on a server. Like a rare Pokémon card lol

@@OhTyZer Its still not worth it turning a nice and relaxing game into a game where you are forced to tryhard, like in my pe survival world (i mainly play java) my nether spawn is a soul sand valley, and on bedrock skeletons spawn 1000000x more frequently in bedrock and they have aim hacks in bedrock too, making it impossible to get it

all tiers below the top tier are stepping stones. the moment they released netherite diamond became a stepping stone. iron was also 'just a stepping stone' back when diamond was king but I never saw anyone complaining that diamond armor and tools weren't expensive enough.

Its fine, but the biggest problem for the upgrade is in multiplayer, where you might have some bad apples going to get as much templates to bar everyone else from getting netherite. A simple solution would be to add a crafting recipe for the upgrade that doesnt need a preexisting upgrade, but is alot more expensive to craft, likely needing Netherite and gilded blackstone in its recipe.

I disagree - netherite doesn't seem strong enough (only slightly better speeds on tools, slightly more durability) that I just use enchanted diamond. Netherite is way too strong, and until there are stronger enemies, I don't see a use for it. On the other hand, it is super easy to get diamonds via buried treasure and trading, which should be focused on

I hate hate hate the fact that you have to find the bastion for this, I already hate trying to find the fortress, this update will be the reason that I and many others stop using netherite. Its not worth the trouble anymore. Especially not when you need diamonds in the literal hundred to craft enough netherite upgrades for full armor and tools. I understand the systems they’re trying to balance, and I do think they need fixing, but this is ridiculously convoluted and not at all worth the effort for something that was already somewhat of a pain to get to begin with.

Currently my only issue with this are with the tools. The knockback decrease for armor and damage increase for swords are fine, but the tool mining speed now feels lacking for all the added effort, especially for pickaxes. Netherite Pickaxes with Eff 5 Haste 2 should be able to instamine Deepslate now. Same with Netherite Axes and logs.

That's one extra step we now have to take to get to the endgame and the game is still to easy in my opinion.

I like the idea of needing to find netherite upgrade templates in bastions, but I disagree with them being consumable. If they MUST be consumable, then the duplication recipe should be a more renewable item, even if the renewability is a bit advanced. Also, doesn't make sense lore wise for a template to be consumable. Most templates for building stuff IRL serve as a guide that can be pulled out and reused. I think the cost of reusing netherite upgrades is too high with seven diamonds. In the progression from wood to stone to iron to diamond at least doubles durability each tier with all tools and armor, armor points go up and the number of blocks that can be instamined under different conditions go up. None of these are true with netherite, and you get max durability increase of 30% for tools and approximately 10% for armor. This cost might be fine difficulty progression for singleplayer and friendly servers, but on competitive survival servers with PvP making small differences in gear matter more and keepinventory off, and the ability to lose your hard earned netherite armor in literally 2 seconds with a clean doubletap with end crystals, adding more grindiness to netherite just seems like a bad idea, given how many maxed toolsets you'd want, and give people who grinded pre-1.20 an unfair advantage. I don't see obtaining netherite as needing more grindiness given cost associated with mining ancient debris and dealing with all the lava pockets and rarity deep in the nether.

I see your points, and you make great ones - but don't you think pre that pre 1.20, it's WAY too easy to convert diamonds into netherite through the basic smithing table UI. It takes no effort and to me it just makes it feel like Netherite Tools / Armour are way too OP for how cheap they are to make; they don't cost anything but time to find ancient debris + a few golden ingots. 7 diamonds could be a bit too expensive + I get what you mean by Netherite Upgrades being consumed being a little strange lore-wise, but what other method would you propose of 'nerfing' how netherite is currently obtained? @@OhTyZer Well even the status quo of netherite obtainment already puts off very very casual players, and this change would then make even more casual players to give up on getting it. In the competitive survival realm, it already takes a long time to get geared, due to the current crystal pvp meta. You need to build a raid farm, villager trading hall, piglin bartering farm, gold farm, ghast farm, enderman farm, blaze farm, and obsidian farm to get all the gear you need for PvP these days, plus have full netherite armor to be competitive, and be able to replenish your gear effectively when you are killed. Doing the extra steps for netherite each time someone sneaks up behind you and blows you up seems really annoying. It seems that this nerf is more fitting for hardcore worlds where the point is for obtaining things to be a challenging accomplishment and friendly SMPs that struggle with people getting geared and bored too quick. Maybe make the cost to craft another template even higher, like with a nether star, original template and seven diamonds, but make it a game rule that is default to false whether the upgrade template is consumed when being used. Hardcore players could set that gamerule to true before starting the world, like some disable the game rule of natural regeneration to make hardcore even more difficult. Server owners could then also set it to true to keep the casual SMP pace going for longer.

The only way I’d accept this new system is if Netherite was buffed across the board. Think about it, all you get with armor is the Knockback resistance and it doesn’t take durability from fire, it offers hardly any additional protection compared to Diamond. Netherite armor seriously needs an armor point buff, like give us 15 armor instead of the 10 that Diamond offers, and maybe a fire resistance effect for a limited time like the turtle helmet does would give you a serious use out of upgrading from Diamond to netherite. The tools are ok, but could be improved in durability or mining speed. I just know by the time I make a new world, I am only sticking with Diamond.

I believe they should have Smithing template for hardcore difficulty only and not required for easy mode, for someone like me who hasent beaten the game yet, right before I find 1 ancient debris 1.20 comes out and made it even difficult to even get even 1 netherite armor or tools 😢 I also have bad luck in the nether and died with good gear so many time 😅

@@nicolaecalin4217 The opinion that netherite is hard to get is in itself a minority; most people are able to get it within the first day or two of playing. This change doesn't make it harder to get, it just adds an extra step. For instance, cyan dye isn't hard to get, it just takes more steps than other flowers, because you have to mix blue and green dye.

They spawn at least once every few chunks, making ancient debris close to as rare as diamonds. The main difference is that you can blast mine for debris, making it easier to get than diamonds on a 1-1 scale without fortune.

I personally hate this update. I feel like this should only affect hardcore and private servers. On public servers, netherite armor will not save you at all, in fact a netherite god set might only delay death from other players, thus netherite was not overpowered at all. The issue now is with a limited amount of bastions in smps, there is a limit to the amount of netherite ungrading items. After these run out, no more netherite. I will not be surprised if some smps stick to 1.19 and do not update and I hope Mojang will make these items more common like how they made diamonds more common.

Sucks they never changed this AT ALL since it was first added. The logics behind it make no sense, the texture makes no sense, and having single use items that ONLY exist to get to other items doesn't make sense either. So much for snapshots not being final.

I 100% disagree with this. Just because they think there is a problem with 1.)netherite being too easy to get or 2.) diamonds being not useful enough DOESNT MEAN this is the current way to solve it. This doesn’t actually make diamonds more useful. These are all still a ONE TIME fixed cost as opposed to iron which is continually needed for anvils, hoppers, pistons, etc etc etc. if they actually wanted to make diamonds more useful they’d give it something to craft that serves a red tone function or does something for a farm. More importantly, the upgrade makes absolutely no sense lore wise. Netherite is being applied to diamond gear, what are the 7 diamonds actually doing. What if you had to use 7 iron and 1 diamond to upgrade your shovel to diamond? That is just stupid. Really breaks from the immersion of the game to have a game balance change that doesn’t not make logical sense.

This is the problem now with the netherite upgrade system. A diamond pickaxe has 1561 uses before it breaks. A netherite one has 2031. So why does it cost 7 diamonds for an extra 500 durability? This change is completely unbalanced, if the upgrade used seven netherrack, one diamond and one netherite ingot without the netherite ingot in the smithing table i would agree.

@@OhTyZer This one is different. We never really had a nerf like that. Iron and Diamonds became much more easy to get. This is the first time that Ressources are nerfed. Yeah, it’s a cool idea for netherite to be much more rare. But we already have a method for that. With that method I got full netherite on many maps. So I already had the experience of getting full netherite. After the update it will not feel more rewarding, because I had this Experience many times in the past. The nerf is just too late. If the nerf also had a buff for netherite, it would be an new experience to get it. What I want to say is, it will NOT feel more rewarding, because we already had the experience of getting it, it will just feel longer to get it.

Trash take. Why can we just make diamond armor then ? Why not make us use diamonds or smthn' to upgrade iron armor ? I was always hoping that the next best thing after diamonds was standalone ore that was in nether or end. Putting it after an end boss makes so much more sense then having us explore some structure to find an item u can dupicate later. When you defet the dragon a suitable reward is the chance to find elytra it gives a meaning to end cieties. Why not make a nether boss that gives you acces to netherite and makes finding structures actually matter. This changes nothing once you get one never visit a a bastion again. Makes the whole point of bastions a joke. And overall the push for exploration in minecraft is bad everything is too far apart before elytra and having to run like 5000-10000 blocks for some stupid ship is bad af.
