Dit was zonder meer het beste nationaal elftal die ooit gespeeld heeft op een groot toernooi. Dit was voetbal buiten categorie of van een ander planeet. En mijne favoriet was Rensenbrink alias de Slangemens. Het was een genot om die mannen te zien spelen. En toch blijf ik erbij….met Jan Van Beveren in het doel in ‘74 en ‘78 dan waren jullie 2x wereldkampioen geworden. En dit zijn woorden van een voetbalsupporter uit Vlaanderen.

Auch für mich die größte Fußballmannschaft aller Zeiten. Als 17-jähriger deutscher Junge war ich 1974 tieftraurig, dass diese tollen Fußballer nicht Weltmeister wurden. Seitdem bin ich Oranje-Fan und warte sehnsüchtig auf den ersten Weltmeistertitel für die Elftaal!

The best team I ever saw. They played gracious and tough at the same time..hunters, ballet dancers,, r&roll-stars. Rep, Rensenbrink, Van Hanegem, Haan, Neeskens, Krol, Suurbier and Cruyff at his peak. Amazing. And that their great goal keeper Jan van Beveren wasn't there....with Van Beveren in their squad they would have been world champion.

Never realised it, but actually they lost only 3 games during 90 minutes in a worldcup since 1990, 2-1 against Germany WC1990, 3-2 Brasil WC1994 and 1-0 Portugal during WC2006. Also Remarkeble, if they lose then their opponent will have a very good tournament. Germany 1990 and Brasil 1994 became WC. Also the games they lost due to penaltyshooting gave their opponent a medal, Brasil runner up in 1998 and Argentina gold 2022. Not to mention the game they lost against Spain in 2010 ( or Germany 1974 and Argentina 1978) So beat the Dutch and you’re ensured to win a medal as it seems? 😅

The term ‘Total Football’ was a load of pseudo b%^&*(£s that was intended to mystify people. There was nothing secret about the Dutch game. Wim Van Hanegem said that before each match there was hardly any tactical talk and there were few team changes. Play football and work hard was the message. There was nothing the Dutch did that Brazil in 1970, Poland in 1974 didn’t do, except play with a high offside line to squeeze the space their opponents had to play in. It was more a case of a group of great players coming together at the same time who knew each other’s game well and played as a team. Once they were gone Holland disappeared for nearly a decade.
