The Indus Valley mariners traded with the Sumerians from a much earlier period. According to Poseidonius, later reported in Strabo's Geography, the monsoon wind system of the Indian Ocean was first sailed by Eudoxus of Cyzicus in 118 or 116 BC guided by a shipwrecked sailor from India that had been rescued in the Red Sea. The Yatra Dhoni is unique to SL and different to the Maldivian vessels. They were the only ships with an outrigger. The ancient method of stitching and caulking the planks instead of nailing and using metal fasteners created a lighter, cost-effective and flexible craft suited for beaching, though it also meant a size restriction (50-100 feet). However, even Magellan's Victoria and Sir Francis Drake's Golden Hind, used to circumnavigate the globe, were 69 and 102 feet respectively. The size advancement is largely a more recent development in the history of the global shipbuilding culture. At certain periods of history like 1st - 3rd century, there were larger ships in the mediterranean sea and in 15th century China. In the 9th century AD Li Chao the Mandarin who wrote Tang Kao Shih Pu reports the ships from the Lion Kingdom (Lanka/Pallava/Sri Vijaya??) were the largest, with stairways for loading and unloading which are several tens of feet in height"
