nice descriptions, I want to add a famous optimization problem call the spider on the wall. It is essentially finding a nets that minimizes the the straight line to the spider. " If you don't unfold it right you creating a longer distances even though the shorts distance between 2 points is a straight line you get confused. The flaw is your relying on the net you created as yielding the best place to put the 2 points for the shortest line.

I am actually curious of a generalization of nets of higher polytopes still thinking on this one (as it be cool to generalize the fly on the wall to any polytopes in any dimensions). Also there is slightly a correspondence to nets and polyomino. Calculus of variations gives the continuous version to this problem but for discrete based problems or discrete like objects like polytopes its easier if one has a theory for nets to unfold them ...then all you got to do is draw the straight line directly between the two points and your done.

Nets are 2D, so I'm assuming you meant "area" or "surface area". Simple, you just calculate the area of each face.
