Hi Dr. Cockerell, a minor comment: Merkel cells are no longer thought to originate from the neural crest. Although they stain positive for some neural markers, they are thought to arise from epidermal ectoderm rather than neural crest. Evidence from skin graft experiments in birds implied that they are neural crest derived in the past, but experiments in mammals now demonstrate an epidermal origin.
