@@Beaah it’s not about being fragile, it’s about being comfortable. Women tend to have a more comforting presence in some areas so both men and women might prefer them to men. When I go to the gynecologist I specifically request female doctors because it makes me more comfortable. I once had a teacher who said he would prefer male doctors for prostate exams because if there was something wrong or something he forgot to do that day, he’d be embarrassed around a woman 🤷🏽‍♀️ it’s not homophobic or sexist. It’s just who makes you most comfortable. But in Howard’s case yes it was homophobic 😂

@@Heyyitsalli I don't think it's fair to call it homophobic in Howard's case either. He thinks that massages are a sexual thing, and he doesn't want that from a man. I'm not homophobic either for not dating men. It's just sexual preference. Edit: I thought about it a bit, and while I stand by the principles of my previous point, I do think now that Howard was being homophobic. Not based on what he said, but based on his attitude behind what he said. It was not just a sexual preference to him. He thought of it as wrong to have this sexual thing between two men. He really didn't want other people to think that he would've been okay with it.

Thank you for your comment!!. I felt very similarly. There is way too much virtue signaling in this reaction. It ruined all of the comedy writing and the entire point of these television episodes. Like the scene about the smell of formaldehyde. Sheldon didn't mean it literally. It was a joke. Howard is not homophobic, in any way. Never was, just because he preferred a woman's touch. He wasn't afraid of men, Rofl. Sheldon and Amy were not Elitist in their behavoirs, in any way. Nor was Sheldon rude to Amy. He was naturally blunt about everything and struggled with emotional cues. I thought this reaction would be lighthearted and fun. Nope, just SJW lectures and talking over everything. Disappointed 😞.

Physics is boring? Take that back! Also, Sheldon doesn't have a mental illness, "his mother got him tested". Penny is a struggling actress/ waitress with a small alcohol addiction who was popular and a bully in school. Her being politically correct about manliness would be out of character. If you're interested in the show's take on sexism and especially women in science, I would recommend season 6 episode 18 witch is specifically focused on this, I surely would love to hear your take on it. The show arguably made nerds cool and was validated by amazing guests but at the core is pop culture made by pop culture people and the comedic premise is stereotyping nerds as socially challenged. All this can be forgiven in my opinion as the purpose is comedy and there should be no limit on what you are allowed to joke about. Laughter is the strongest human clopping mechanism and if comedians don't have a hidden agenda, they should not be called out on their craft. Some of the guests in the show are: Stephen Hawking,

I can't say for sure what the initial intentions were, if they were based on sexism, but to me these exaggerated cliché traits of men and women are just funny, which is what the show is supposed to be. I think most people wouldn't enjoy the reality as much, at least for me that's the case and that's why nobody should be safe from humor, cause the minute you say something, someone or a certain group of people should not/never be made fun of - no matter the reasoning - you're treating them differently and that's something that would really bother me - if someone tried catering to me because of WHAT i am, not WHO i am as a person

Love your reaction! As a fan of big bang theory, I can tell you that also in other episodes there are some quotes from Amy intentional to "make fun" of Sheldon who considers himself a genius in everything he does. In some of the writers' interviews they point out that Sheldon misses the sarcasm and for a long time fails to admit that Amy's work is equally important and difficult than that of another field as a theoretical physicist. The aim of your video was to point out any mistakes that may have been made, but I think it might interest you as they still proposed a realistic character who knows how to "joke" about her job, as you rightly pointed out in the elephant quote. If sheldon had had a prep he would surely have understood why he could or could not drink from that beaker.

28:27 - In this scene Penny is not berating Howard or bossing him arround. She is recognising that Howard and Bernadette are the best thing that ever happened to each other, and is nudging him in a direction that acctually is good for him. And knowing how the show ended, Penny was correct in this case. I also think that Sheldon and Amy are good for each other. Yes, they have some bumps along the way, but they do work through them. I like that the show actually shows that being in a serious relationship is not easy, it is hard work. And for some, the hardship is visible to their friends who genuinely tries to help - even if the help often are, uhm, «misguided» in this show. :-) Greetings from Norway.

We had a post doc protein expert come in to work with us on some things, he saw perfusion for the first time and fainted, hit his head on the way down. It was a catastrophe. But I like how you said that you're supposed to open the formaldehyde under the hood, supposed to. The cleaning is missing the autoclave tho

haha to be fair, perfusions are pretty intense. I always make sure to have someone stand behind undergrads when they see a perfusion for the first time just in case they faint. It's happened a couple of times lol

I don't know why people faint when they see blood. I worked at a vet clinic for 12 years and saw the doctor pull a dogs guts out so he could fix a little cut in their intestines because he had gone septic on us (a knife apparently fell off the kitchen counter and stabbed him in the side deep enough to nick an intestine). All I did was put my little mask and some gloves on while I held his leg up so the doctor could get the right incision angle.

Sheldon’s knocking isn’t related to OCD. It’s related to trauma from when he was kid. He saw his father and mother having sex but he didn’t know it was his mother and thought his dad was having an affair.

I’ve been watching Big Bang for a while now, I’m autistic and it’s become one of my special interests. It definitely has some bad portrayals of mental illness and sheldon is definitely a autistic/neurodivergentcoded character. I’ve found many of the sexist jokes die down, idk if that was because of criticism or character development but yeah. In the end, I do love the show despite its flaws and it did fuel my interest in science as a kid.

I have no concept of the structure of the brain but since Amy's monkeys were addicted to cigarettes and if the elephant really had syphilis (maybe an elephant with a sex addiction) maybe the common denominator were the parts of the brain related to pleasure and addiction. Sorry if the sentence is somewhat out of order, English is not my first language (more third if the start of learning it defines the order).

Whenever I was in the anatomy lab there was always the smell of femeldahyde (I can’t spell). It always used to make everyone hungry, which was a little disturbing. A friend told me it is because the femeldahyde lights up the hunger centers of the brain. Do you know if that is true?
@AskANeuroscientist
@AskANeuroscientist 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! You taught me something new today haha! I did some research and, yes! It seems like we don't fully understand why it makes us hungry but that appears to be a normal reaction. Anatomy labs are a bit different from research labs though, the reason why the smell is so strong is because you usually have multiple preserved subjects out at one time, whereas in a lab you'd have only one or two out and they'd be in a fume hood. The conditions we put anatomy students in can actually be dangerous to their long term health, but it's (in my opinion) a result of poor funding to those labs.

@@AskANeuroscientist i assumed you would have had to have done some anatomy to become a neuroscientist? I did a degree in exercise science and for that I had four different anatomy subjects over the years. The students who do the courses here that would lead to neuroscience also do at least four anatomy subjects.

Lovely video. I do research in neuroscience using drosophila. We do use bacteria a lot, specially for me. I clone certain genes into plasmids to be injected into the embryo of the fly to express that gene, more specifically to use the Gal4 driver to give signal of that gene. So there are a lot of molecular biology and bacteria involved in neuroscience.

Hi! I try to stay mostly on the science but as a woman and member of the LGBT community I do feel a responsibility to call out homophobia and sexism where I see it. Unfortunately the show does have underlying tones of both of those things. There's a great video essay on it here kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmSQmYKfnNSrftU. I do think that the show is overall good, but we acknowledge the problematic parts while still enjoying the comedy.

I’d say that the show does a good job on showing strong and intelligent women. Penny, while not a school person, is really good with people and finds success in her job because of her talent. And she’s also very “masculine” while wearing pretty shoes lol Same with Bernadette that has a great job while also having kids, and Amy that takes more care of herself as the show goes on, learning to be with other people etc.. Of course it’s a sitcom so humor is a big part of it. And I find it really funny! Unfortunately we won’t have sitcoms like this one anymore...
