This compilation of four M.A.D World episodes explores the events that shaped the latter years of the Cold War and the nuclear age, from the neutron bomb to the fall of the Soviet Union. The most chilling weapon of the Cold War is tested in Nevada and sends headlines of horror across the globe. The Neutron Bomb uses an intense burst of radiation to maximise casualties while minimising damage to property.

I'm seriously considering unsubscribing after watching 44' of this doc. For one thing, its title states that it's about the neutron bomb, but it hasn't reached that topic by this time. So far, it concerns itself with the cold war, with Vietnam, Chile and Angola. I always resent being misled by inaccurate or deceiving titles. I spent time watching because I was interested in learning more about the N-bomb. As for the other content, some of it is utter BS. The only countries to become Communist after the fall of Vietnam were Laos and for a while Cambodia, which was taken over by a Maoist movement and was brought to an end by Communist Vietnamese troops a few years later. Not mentioned was the short-lived and abortive invasion of Vietnam by China. The Chinese were routed by the seriously outnumbered Vietnamese forces. Another questionable claim was that the Allende government was waging war against the Chilean middle class. If you look at the people in and supportive of the Allende government, you will see that most if not all were middle-class people. What should be clear is that, like most of Latin America, the country had been dominated by an inherited oligarchy ruling over terrible poverty in many quarters. Happily, Chile and much of Latin America are starting to recover from that stagnant and unequal arrangement without dictatorships of the left or right.

Man yall should have included that story of the man who stole a helicopter during the American evacuation, flew it to an American ship with his family aboard, let his family get off the chopper onto the ship, and then because there was no place to actually land on ship jumped from the flying helicopter into the sea as the chopper crashed into the water. He survived the jump and was picked up by the ship. Such an incredible story.

The comedy was revelatory far as humans and human nature producing any kind of event you can imagine as possible if not likely. I believe you grasp the connection in time and space while no nuclear device is not put on the kitchen table as the meal. Last meal. Since it is tanks that take and hold territory the Neutron bomb no matter its name will wipe out tank crews. Now tanks are built with the threat of thermonuclear devices in mind.

And then, a few years later, we fell into the same trap in Afghanistan. We went into the country after Osama Bin Laden but we were sucked into a war with the Taliban that basically ended in the same fashion as it did for the us in Vietnam. We didn't learn a damn thing from Vietnam! I served as a US Marine from 1968 to 1971 but didn't get to Vietnam, serving a year on Okinawa in a support role. I just hope that we have learned, as a society as a whole, to stay out of these foreign wars, but I doubt it.

This couldln't actualy be more incorrect. The Neutron bomb is improperly named; it is really a hydrogen bomb without the U238 wrapper. As such it does produce very high energy neutrons but it doesn't have the U238 to create heavy radioactive materials; so it is high energy but very short term only a few moments; but relatively low in what most people call radiation which is long term heavy element radiation. The blast is also far less as the U238 fission gives much of megatons of punch. So rather than long term radioactive a neutron bomb is relative small megatons and short term.

@kendallkahl8725

The biggest problem was countries would say they wanted socialism looking at European models for socialism and America would hear Communism. Also at the root was American companies were worried about their investments they had made going into dust if the country nationalized. In the Middle East and elsewhere companies would just be making back the money they had spent on exploration and drilling, refining, shipping and other infrastructure costs only to have it all swept away. People talk about greedy oil companies but they got burned over and over when they got their works nationalized. We should have made things joint ventures. Nowadays China is running into similar problems with putting in infrastructure but not having the money spent paid back. Countries are also upset because they only used Chinese labor so skills and money for hiring local labor becomes a reason companies don't want to pay them back. They are learning the super power blues. The USSR went under because they didn't get paid for all the infrastructure and weapons they shelled out. Russia has learned the lesson and avoids loans to countries that are in poor shape to pay them back. Weapons its cash up front. Now they are hurting because they have been made to look like third rate weapons.

I do remember most of the square-heads from National Securitycouncil, or Zbignew Brzezinski ... -maybe just because SALT 2 was signed in Vienna. Living next to Iron Curtain may have "given me the rest" (to say it with a German phrase). Next chapter: Afghanistan. Really interesting documentary. And: Terrifying

Gareth Evens, Australias Minister of Foreign says in this documentary: We had pure luck. Why do all speak about it like the threat was in the past? -We have got pure luck at any second! The list of coincidences with nuclear warheads including number of lost warheads, burning silo (...) and other accidents once were a secret, now released to the public (blackened parts still blackened): about 100 accidents with nuclear weapons involved. More or less severe :-/ Sorry, Guys, it is not over! Could happen every day!

I closed after the introduction on Chile. Factually, as Congressional investigation revealed, the US is not responsible for the Chilean economy collapse or the coup. Allende implemented Marxist reforms and the economy failed. Of course no one was going to provide access to credit for him as his economy spiraled into high inflation and deficit. Allende was also not a democrat and was trying to install a dictatorship as per his collaboration with Fidel Castro and KGB suggested. Attempts to consolidate military power in his hands, brutal crackdown on protests and refusal to dismiss a defense minister that fired his weapon at a civilian after a road range incident pushed the military to stage a coup (a coup of which the US was aware, Allende was aware, but the CIA was not involved as per Congress investigation).

@@michaelsheehan7316 It's called speration of power and checks & balances. It's not "the US", it's the US Congress that investigated the US Government and the CIA in their involvement. If you want to dispute the investigation, the documents and testimonials are public.
