40 year Las Vegas resident here and thank you for pronouncing Nevăda properly. A few issues, inaccuracies and omissions however with some content: -Henderson is technically the 2nd largest city in the state. -The 'Strip' resorts are actually NOT in Las Vegas proper, they're in Winchester and Paradise/Clark County. -Clark County is named for a Montana senator -Lee Canyon ski resort is less than an hour drive from the Strip. -Famous for buffets sure, but many long time residents would argue our signature dish is the $.99 shrimp cocktail. -Nevada has over 300 individual mountain ranges, the most of any state. -Las Vegas began as a railroad town. Not gaming or mining. -Nevada only receives about 25% of the power generated by Hoover Dam. -Nevada is landlocked and the driest state, yet Fallon is home to the Navy's 'Topgun' fighter school. -Las Vegas is the largest American city founded in the 20th century. Those are just some facts I hoped to see here about a state I would argue is one of the most misunderstood in the nation.

Most people don't realize the Hoover dam doesn't produce electricity for Las Vegas. That 25% is almost exclusively for rural Nevada.

The lower basin water allocation is the real issue. California gets 59% , Arizona- 37% and Nevada only 4%. The agreement was signed a hundred years ago when there was no significant population or agriculture in Nevada, but we make up for it by pooping in the river.
@dmannevada59814 жыл бұрын
@@kegawinek7628 The "real" issue with water allocations is the fact that the water was over allocated during the 1922 Colorado compact-as is well understood today. It's taking years to renegotiate that agreement(and many more years to go), hence the temporary emergency agreement to keep the reservoir from falling below a specific elevation to guarantee the power plant keeps operating. I assume your "pooping in the river" is facetious since the SNWA has the most sophisticated water treatment facilities in the western US. The water returned to the reservoir is cleaner than when it was drafted in the first place.

@@freedomlover8412 true, some of what I wrote would only interest some people, and in my experience, that's more likely non-locals. Certainly most people who click on a video about Nevada are interested in learning about, you guessed it, Nevada. I actually enjoy the content on this channel and when I view I like to think I'm getting straight facts. Even better if I learn something new or even obscure. If I see a thumbnail with New Jersey in the title, I don't want to hear about track-suited goombas or corrupt politicians, anyone can spew that nonsense. Geography King seems as though he wants to offer a little more and I certainly appreciate his efforts. This particular presentation, however, did have some inaccuracies which I addressed. In addition, I offered some insight about this state that I have typically found received with piqued interest, as well as incredulity.

As a 20 year resident of Nevada I love this, thank you. Regarding your comment of "Not a lot of unique food" I've not seen this in Las Vegas or Reno, but in some of the smaller, older, towns that haven't had huge influxes of newcomers, there is a "Nevadan sandwich", particularly a couple of resturants in Minden serve it. It's basically a roast beef sandwich with a huge Ortega chili. Also lots of basque influence in the Northern half of the state. Lots of basque or basque influenced foods. One last one, back in the 50's most towns in Nevada had a casino called "The Nugget". They were owned by the same person, and they all had a burger called the "Awful-Awful" (short for awful big, awful good). They've all since been sold off to different owners, the menus have evolved and gone separate ways. There is a surprisingly passionate rivalry over which one is the "true" Awful-Awful. The Travel Channel decreed the Sparks one to be the best in a bakeoff they did, but they conveniently forgot the Carson City Nugget, and the Reno Nugget has since closed, so their test is no longer valid.

Are there figures given for average sales tax by purchase inclusive of city and local taxes? In addition, U.S. property taxes vary widely. I've been working in manufacturing in northern NV since the mid 90s, currently at a small furniture manufacturing plant where the owner is scrambling to fill positions, and I drive by countless "Now Hiring" signs every week. Feeling the pandemic, NOT feeling underemployed!

@@briandesjardin9381 So much of this is perspective. Lot's of opportunities if you're looking for them, even here in Nevada where the gaming industry has been hit hard.

As for food, you missed out on the Basque cuisine.
@joeb73734 жыл бұрын
Signature food? Try some of the Basque places. Climatology, Northern Nevada is classified as a mid latitude steppe. Mining- no mention of copper? You should have mentioned the Tesla gigafactoy. Natives; Washoes in the western portion , Western Shoshone in the eastern half in addition to the Northern Paiutes ( note: reservations were replaced with colonies). The convention industry should have been separated out of the casino industry. Battle Born, Baby.

poor Nevada, missing the nuclear testing industry from the past, wanting to miss the nuclear waste storage industry (Yucca Mountain) one Nevada industry is warehousing, which seems to be a tax dodge from CA, I think CA assesses taxes things stored in warehouses In Hawaii, Vegas is by far the number one tourist destination, referred to as 'The 9th island' (after the 8 primary Hawaiian islands) and there is a fairly large Hawaiian community there. Casino reliance is worrisome and increasingly controlled by Indian tribes in other states.

I'll take Vegas over Reno annnnnyyyyyyy day of the week- especially on Independence Day when the whole valley is lit up with fireworks plus the night-time view of the city is dazzling if you arrive by way of I-15 S. Has anyone noticed the rock formation viewable along US-93 (west side) north of Vegas that resembles a female reproductive body part?
