Adore her, love Sidney Prescott. I was a huge fan of the first three Scream films. The first one came out when I was 9-years-old, so they had a big impact on me. I was so excited when Scream 4 came out and so disappointed at the result. It really was a mess of a film. I read an earlier draft of the script that was much better. It was clearly rewritten a lot. I know Kevin Williamson was the only credited screenwriter, but during the Writer’s Guild arbitration he said something like 8 or 10 other writers were applying for credit. Ehren Kruger (who wrote Scream 3) did some work on it and ended up getting a producers credit as compensation. Too many cooks in the kitchen. I think the films have gotten progressively worse since then. Screams 5 and 6 are both pretty awful, but they’re well-shot films with attractive casts, so I think that’s part of the appeal for a lot of people. The scripts are absolute trash, though. I always get miffed when people say Scream 3 is the worst. It was certainly the weakest entry at the time of its release, but it’s still a good movie and a solid sequel. Everything that followed it was just awful. Nothing in Scream 3 is anywhere near as ridiculous as that final hospital sequence in 4 or the de-aged Billy Loomis ghost in 5 and 6. I really wish they had ended the franchise at 3. It was a perfect trilogy, in my mind. I know she’s going to be in the upcoming Scream 7, but I don’t think I can bring myself to watch it. I’d rather live in an imaginary world where it ended back in 2000.
