Originating in the West African country of Nigeria, ‘Keya is a group made up of four siblings. The quartet which consists of three ladies and one man has been together since its youngest member was born. Ihuoma, Ogechi, Enyioma, and Chinagozi “Chingo” Nwankwo have enjoyed writing, arranging music and singing together for as long as they can remember; although Chingo was only officially inducted into the group when he was judged old enough to hold a tune by his older sisters’ estimation.
The group remembers making up fun songs while doing laundry, household chores, walking to school, everything. “We were always singing” recalls Ogechi. However, their talent and passion was not limited to writing and performing delightful silly songs in the home (although they enjoy this very much). Ministering to others through music as a group became something they eventually learned to appreciate as a privilege and a means of spreading the good news about the love of Jesus Christ.
Their debut album, Jesus is Enough is a testament to ‘Keya’s commitment to do just that - share the wonderful gospel of the love of God with everyone. With ten short songs, two of them in their native language, Igbo, they hope to encourage others by proclaiming What the Lord Has Done (for Me). Using their acapella blend and unique style, ‘Keya has finally released this album which many friends and family especially their mother feel has been long over-due.
‘Keya started out with many names in the past. They remember being called “The Nwankwo’s”, “The Nwankwo kids”, “The Nwankwo children’, and one memorable time “The Nwankwo girls” despite the obvious presence of Chinagozi. They soon decided on a name and remained “The Pearls” for a few years. Seeking something unique that would not only embrace their Igbo Nigerian roots but also reflect their Christian faith led the quartet to their new name. ‘Keya in full is actually made up of two Igbo words: ‘nke Ya’, Ya represents a person, in this case, God. ‘Keya means for Him (God) or His own: God’s own.
Through not only their music, but their lives as well ‘Keya hopes to continue to give all glory to God to him it is due; declaring that we all belong to God. We are ‘Keya.
