Never alone on the road in colombia (Overlanding) - EP 70

A meet-up in Bogota, a new bag for the Albatross, the highest palm trees in the world and a lot of FRIENDS: old friends, new friends, Colombian friends, international friends.
Last week we travelled through the doors of the Andes in Colombia. High elevations and dramatic landscapes around: a dream. This week we went down in elevation, we have a lot of people we want to meet in and around the big cities of Colombia. Since we started the journey we got virtually in contact with a log of Colombians over landers and it was finally the opportunity for us to meet them.
We also meet again with long-time friends we travelled with in Baja California: the one and only ‪@gdayjambo‬ ! It is such a great feeling to be able to meet again and we explore one of the most unique region of Colombia home to an exceptional type of tree... The tallest palm trees in the world!
So it was busy weeks with a lot happening and especially a tons of amazing encounters.

Im so surprised to see palm trees in the moutains in a cool climate. They look so out of place. I wonder how they got there and survive. Columbia is beautiful, the cities and coutryside. So interesting to see the many homes built up the side of the mountain. Looked like perfect weather.

That is a good point! There are mini farms everywhere, up the highest trails in the most remote corners it is very impressive

I think Medellin (or, as they pronounce it, Mede-gin) is one of the coolest cities I have been to. I liked how it was in a bowl in the middle of the mountains, and the climate there was really temperate. The city definitely had a vibrant atmosphere and, yeah, it seemed really well-endowed with a lot of civic art and modern buildings. I also saw those tall palm trees during a meeting in Armenia, which is in that coffee region. The wild thing about them is not only the height, but the fact that this area doesn't feel tropical. Because of the elevation, it is pretty cool up there, not like you are approaching the equator. But it IS very green. I liked how you can get the verdant green of the tropics, but you're not boiling hot all the time.

Not everything is perfect for sure but those days are long gone and Colombians are very proud of that and hope the country can be mentionned for other things than drugs and cartel. We have heard so many bad things about Colombia, but you show us nothing but Beauty. There is supposed to be millions of gang members in prison in Columbia, there is the newly-released movie sound of Freedom about child sex trafficking in Columbia. Columbia is painted as being a really terrible place. But from what you show us it looks very nice and quiet and peaceful. I guess there are some bad areas not to go into. That is all very true and we got the same feeling with nick. Colombia was everything but what we always hear about it. Not everything is perfect but it surely does not deserve to be always linked to drugs or cartel etc

Mechanical drive train is slower louder and not as comfortable but much easier to maintain and fix. The Fj40 looked to be in Really nice shape!

The dog is the best! Yes and that place actually is considered well payed… could be less. We could not go in details but the history of coffee plantations in Colombia is really fascinating

Those palm trees are amazing. Fascinating trip through Columbia. So good to see it from the ground, if you know what I mean, not just as vaguely negative news stories. Everyone seemed very friendly. Glad you didn't lose Albo in the swap - or indeed over any of those scarily steep edges on those narrow roads. Also interesting that Columbia is where so many overlanders get together.

The mountains, the coffee plantations, and those incredibly tall palm trees - wow, the nature is amazing in Colombia! Funny to see Olivia with her peanut butter and "jambo" (later, peanut butter & banana) sandwiches 😂. Hi guys! Since you already have visited more places than I thought you would by the time, let me suggest a visit to Manizales. They have a network of cable cars there to connect some areas of the city, something unusual for us in Europe. Also, bare in mind that Colombia has 14 active volcanoes, some of them more than 5.000 m. Don't miss to visit one if possible. Finally, since you already are ahead, when you visit Equador and go outside of Quito to the Equator line, there are two Equator lines there. The most famous is the old one, positioned by 1735 to 1744 and the a newer one, more accurate which is some 250m away, with no signals and labels at all. Ask for it and go there. It' outside of the perimeter of the tourist area. You will see things you never dreamed of. Keep safe.

Hello! Thanks a lot for all the recommendations. We saw the cable cars of manzaniles it was awesome. And as you saw we took the ones of Medellin. You re right it felt so strange. Felt like going skiing. We has a bit of difficulty with the Colombian volcano. For most you need a guide and some were closed ( we really wanted to do azufrar but it s not open since 2017). We re in Ecuador and it is amazing ! We love it really 😍 hope all is well!

Hi you two ….. watched one of your very early videos recently and noticed you had a Jackery 1000 …… I’ve had one 3 years now and have noticed it loses charge a lot quicker than it used to, you obviously use yours a lot more than I do, just wondering how it’s performing….. stay safe 👍

Hey! It is not our primary source of power so although we use it a bit everyday s it is very little. After 1,5 year we did not notice a change in the discharge. But again we never put anything heavy. Barely our phone in the evening. It is more of a back up system
