Thanks, Luke. I have watched many so called 'pepper experts' explain many things about peppers but, not once have they ever mentioned how to tell when a pepper is really ripe & perfect for seed-saving! Please keep throwing in those extra perks! It's those little things that make or break a gardener

I have been going to the farmer's market and when I see a pepper I like, I buy it, save the seeds and write down what I know about it. Saves on buying seed packets, is fun to do, and I love the excitement of growing my own little experiment, courtesy of my local farmer friends!

Love your vids. I have been using them to help me with my container gardening up here in Canada....and yes they have helped. I only get, at most, five to six hours of direct sunlight on my deck a day in the summer. I have managed to grow some great tomatoes. This year I have tried peppers, lettuce, spinach and herbs as well as more varieties of tomatoes. I am not sure about the peppers. I feel, if I want to grow them next year, I may want to try and plant them earlier. Anyway, I have tons of lettuce thanks to your vids on lettuce and I have harvested plenty of spinach (not sure if it is a traditional spinach, I think it is called beet leaf spinach) from one medium-sized pot. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Found it. Paprika is made from Capsicum Pepper.. 10-15 chili or red bell pepper plants stringing them and hanging them dry or use a dehydrator.. Must be totally dry. Dispose of stems, save seeds for next year, Break pepper into small pieces. Grind pepper into a powder form (can use blender), stored in an air-tight jar.

Not with pepper seeds (which I will do with my serrano peppers this year, thanks to Luke) but I have bought organic tomatoes from the grocery store then in this order... 1. Thinly slice tomato into 1/2" slices. 2. Place a slice into a rich soil amendment like miracle grow 3. Lightly cover with more of the soil you used. (Enough that when you water, the tomato slice won't show through.) 4. Water your slice or slices everyday. (Do not let it dry out.) 5. Within 14 days you should see tomato sprouts. When they are about 6-8 inches tall, transplant them outdoors. (Or keep them in your pot if that's what you want.) HINT: I never pluck the smallest tomatoes from the bunch when planting them outdoors in my garden. And that's my cheap and wonderful way to grow my own tomatoes!

@martinbaranyi2129
@martinbaranyi2129 6 жыл бұрын
You need ripe peppers as their seeds are mature enough, remove the seeds by cutting the pepper open and twisting (be careful not to damage the seeds here), lay them on a paper towel and dry them until they are brittle. Some seeds may get black spots, those are signs of disease and should be thrown away, the rest are ready to germinate. You're welcome.
@middle-agedmacdonald2965
@middle-agedmacdonald2965 6 жыл бұрын
How do you know when they are brittle? How do I know when the pepper is ripe/mature enough. If it's just turning red is it ripe, or does it have to be bright red? Does it matter what kind of paper towel? When will the black spots show up? How do I store them for later use? If I do store them do I have to keep checking them for black spots? How often should I check on them? Will it ruin all of the pepper seeds if I don't get the spotted ones out? Thank you.
@martinbaranyi2129
@martinbaranyi2129 6 жыл бұрын
Middle-aged MacDonald Well you gave me quite a task, lol. You can check the brittleness by snapping a seed in half, if it breaks the rest is good, if it bends they need more drying. If your pepper is supposed to be red then bright, ripe red, if yellow then bright ripe yellow, and so on. Take seeds from the biggest, juiciest, brightest pods only. A thick paper towel preferably, other than that no. Black spota can appear anytime, diseased seeds won't sprout. Store them in an airtight sealed container, ziplock bag is perfect. No need to keep checking on them, the disease is in the inside of the seed it won't spread, it won't cause problems.

My question is, do I have to make the seeds go through a cold season (like putting them in the fridge or freezer for a little while) before planting them or can I plant them immediately after they’ve dried out?? I’ve only been buying 6-8” pepper plants and I’ve recently started growing some from store bought seeds and they’re quite easy to grow for me and I’ve harvested some seeds and they’ve been drying for 4 days.
