Instead of buying seed to start with, I recommend just planting a carrot top and letting it re-root. Since it's already mature, it will produce flowers that same year (instead of having to wait two years to generate flowers if you start from seed). It's better than buying seed, because if you buy a carrot, you get to eat the carrot AND you get flowers that same year!
@Emeraldwitch304 жыл бұрын
I'm doing that this year. We got some really nice sweet carrots and decided to take an inch of them and root and seed them out for next summer. They were an organic store bought carrot.

@@mikhailkalashnikov4599 I have learnt from other KZbinrs that if seeds are unavailable or too expensive - as is the case most times- we can utilize a more practical and ingenious method: Grow from kitchen stock and collect the seeds after a few months. This way u now have an endless supply of seeds. Even if u purchase the seeds, Gary and a few other popular bloggers also encouraged us to allow a few crops to go to seed. By following these suggestions, I have saved money which I then reallocated to making other necessary purchases. I'm happy and feel fulfilled. I got a bunch of carrots from my employer when she had a whole bag of spoiled carrots to throw away. Instead of just chucking them in the compost, I took the ones that looked like they had a good chance of sprouting a top, chopped them in half, and planted the top part while composting the bottom. All heads grew and now one is making a bunch of white flowers. I guess planting spoiled carrots counts as a second year of growth! 👍👍 nice work . We living in India normally remove the chaff from the seeds with a help of a huge woven bamboo plate ( any large flat plate can serve the purpose. ) The seed are laid out on the plate and held firmly at the 2 sides & with multiple tilting the plate up and motion will separate all the light n heavy parts of the seeds . The chaff comes to the front end and is easier to remove from the seeds.

@@gailland8681 If the seeds you bought from the store were F1 hybrid seeds and not heirloom seeds, they're basically very unstable, inbred seeds that react weirdly after they first grow. Seeds you harvest from them might not grow new plants and some may not grow any seeds at all. A second problem could be that you waited too long to harvest the tops and the seeds already "flew" out during a storm or windy day. You could try and clip them off while the flowers are still alive and dry them inside, to make sure you keep the seeds. That works for me, at least.

Like your channel coming to the conclusion today you can regrow carrot top from cuttings of carrots to get the flowers in one year instead of leaving some carrots out an extra year. If you buy carrots at a store and save the tops which most throw out 🤔

by your numbers 135,000 seeds per carrot. Mum has popped carrots in from the shop that were a bit past their prime into the ground and they will produce flowers in just a few months.
