It looks like it "sharpens" by taking material off the outside of the chain, but when you properly hand file a chain you work between the teeth. I don't think it is actually sharpening the cutting edge of each tooth, rather filing the outer edge kind of sharp.

I'm just a farmer and a dude that's done wood heat for a lot of my life. Learning to sharpen anything is important. Sharpening chisel and setting rakers isn't crazy difficult if you've sharpened other stuff (setting a good corner is the hard part). Hell, jigs are ubiquitous at this point. For me - I'd never really use this. Then you have guys that'll just buy a new chain every season. For some random homeowner/saws every few years this might be something. I picture this as the "pull through sharpener" for chainsaws. Oh and I enjoy powersaws as just a hobby too, lol. I wanted to do tree work. Ended up being a farmer. I get to do more than the average guy.. less than I'd like though. So I'm definitely not as knowledgeable on it.

@@Kitearmy Stop saying blade... a powersaw doesn't have a blade. What you referred to is the tooth... or cutting/leading edge... you're using blade for chain and individual teeth, there are no blades on a powersaw. @@Kitearmy well, you can avoid it, it's wrong and you're calling more than one thing 'blade', so it's like, even worse. There's a yt ad where the guy uses blade, it's for a sharpening tutorial; he goes: "The best way is to put your chainsaw in a vice, when you sharpen it. Just but the blade in the jaws and crank it up, not too tight, but just so it holds the blade in place while you sharpen, but make sure the blade is free to move around... (?!) Now, I'm gonna mark this first blade with a pen, so i know when I've filed all the blades, I'll come back to that one. Once you've done one side, turn the saw around and sharpen the blades on the other side of the blade." It's like, wt? Just learn there are no blades and that everything has a name, for clarity. Make sure the blade has level blades and at right angles to the side of the blade, with no sharp burrs and that your blades are 35° and sharp...

Grind the blade shorter while the rake most likely isn’t even flat in the first place when you purchase it. I file my blade as soon as I buy them and make sure my rake is flat for consistent cuts and less need for sharpening besides doing a quick touch up here and there. I have used 2 chains and the first one was mostly me messing and round and learning with it because when I ordered it from amazon sent it to me and it did not have the stones in the sharpener. So they let me keep the kit and sent me a brand new one. Few things I learned is you clearly almost never need to sharpen those chains. Just a light tap and a trigger pull is all you need. You can and you will eat up so much of the tooth to where you will have next to nothing left. Only sharpen with your chain is dull AF. Even after a dozen trees and bucking out everything the chain is still sharp as when I put on the 2nd chain. I have a good 5 cords of wood out there drying up right now.

@@brianb8003 electric saws are shit they have no power, they're unreliable and break down easily and their battery runs out very fast they're not good if you're actually putting them to work which is probably why you think they're good, you cut down a little 20 foot tree with an electric saw and now you think you know everything lol well let me tell you from someone who has been cutting down trees their entire life and works in the logging business electric saws suck you're better off using a gas powered chainsaw

Knew a guy who had one of these. Helped me fell a few trees. The thing destroyed his chain. It sharpens the top of the cutting teeth. Anyone who knows anything about chainsaws knows you sharpen the inside curve of the teeth and file the guide down. The guide lets you know when your cutter teeth are too low. Anyway, he used this thing and it ruined the chain. It is to be used with a specific bar & chain. Not just any chain. You’ll get one good use, maybe, after sharpening a chain with this thing.

I had one last less than 2 hours before the chain apparently caught the last little bit of wood, got thrown off the bar, and bent the chain. And yes, the chain was properly tensioned.

In my experience, the best tradeoff between perfect teeth every cut and amount of time sharpening is using a Drexel and diamond chainsaw hone before cutting for the day. Takes a few minutes to do all the teeth, even if they've badly dulled. If you want to know how your chain is, look at 3 things: are there consistent large chips or is it coming out as saw dust, does it cut quickly without needing to push on it, and does it cut perfectly straight down without twisting

As a stihl mechanic never never never use these kind of sharpeners, if you want your teeth to stay sharp longer sharpen to 10 degrees (cuts a shutes easier) or buy tungsten chains and have them sharpened at a shop or buy a diamond wheel.

problem 1. It sharpens the chain on the outside. Problem 2. Being on the end of the blade like that, it’s grinding a curve on the outside of the blades supposedly making the cut worse.
