Another piece of plexiglass for the hole over the door would be nice. It would let more light into the cabin and would probably be an easier fix for you than rock and mortar.😀❣

I just thought of something for the hole you want to fill with rock and mortar...maybe create like a lattice with 1 x 1's or some other thin wood strips for the outside and plexiglass for the inside? That would definitely give it a unique feature and still let some light in. I love everything you've done with the cabin so far. It's a beauty

Hi Kevin! Your front tilted window is called a witches window. They are found in older homes back east. The old belief is that a witch can't fly into your house if the window is tilted. I lived in the Appalachian mountains for 11 years before moving back to my native Oklahoma in 2014. We restored a 113 year-old house that had two witches windows, one on the first floor and one on the third floor. The window is almost always tilted at a 45° angle. I really enjoy your videos. Best Wishes, Helen

That's interesting Helen! Thank you for telling us the old folklore about windows like that! I've seen other old houses with windows like that but had no idea they represented that belief!

Great job! The next time you place lumber on stone, run a thick bead of calk between them. Stone holds onto water for a long time, and the calk keeps the lumber dryer.

Plexi has that problem of cracking. You can do everything right and still get a crack at times. Looks good, I’m impressed with your ability to do a wide range of things Kevin. Haven’t seen Rachel in awhile please know her and her Mother are in my thoughts n prayers.
@davidepool58842 жыл бұрын
You’re eventually going to have to do something to block the birds from getting in through those big cracks along the roofline. I’m sure you’ve already figured that out. That will be a nice place for a short getaway from the farm when you get it finished. You could build a deck around the rock cabin and build a floating dock. There are many possibilities for your new lake property.

Your GoPro footage was good,it was like we were working with you. Two suggestions 1) do the other window in plexiglass you need all the light in the cabin. 2) what about several rolls of black flex seal for the day light areas. The flexibility of hot -cold weather would work.
@territn88712 жыл бұрын
I think you did an excellent job closing up the 2 big openings. I know it was no easy task either all by yourself. I'm glad you and Rachel repaired that old rock house. Would have been a shame letting it sit there and continue to ruin. Having the century-old dwelling on your lake property is an added bonus now that you all have cleaned it out and replaced all the windows, roof, and door. Job well done!👌 Those bobcats got a surprise seeing the new door that prevented them from returning to their old winter home!! Same for the nasty buzzards sealing up their roost and nesting place!

Look into a partnership with a gabion fence manufacturer. You could use them for retaining walls, walkways, landscaping ect. Plenty of materials. They would make a concrete pile look beautiful. Some concrete piers dressed up with gabion fences would be a great rot free base for any addition.

Great job on the cabin. It's just beautiful! This is just a suggestion. I'd fill those holes you can see through with some steel wool. Then, put up the wood you were talking about. Kevin how wide is the opening between the new roof and the wall to the right of the south window? The birds look big but I guarantee that they can get in small spaces. You might want to stuff some steel wool in the openings . Squirrels shouldn't bother the steel wool. Just a thought.
