I’ve had my red tea kettle on my stove for almost two decades! I love the pop of color. I have Longaberger canisters and baskets on my counters. I think a kitchen should look cozy and inviting 😊

I finally relinquished my cast iron pans because at 70 years old they are so heavy . I also have nothing now that won't go thru the dishwasher ! The instapot just stinks so it went away as well . Couldn't agree more about the waffle maker , plain old pancakes work for us . This was a fun video !

Plastic cutting boards release microplastics when you cut on them. :( clean wooden cutting boards with dish soap and dish brush. Treat with coconut cutting board oil by squirting on and wiping with a paper towel. KZbin tutorials on how to salvage your cast iron pan. I was intimidated by my instant pot at first too. I now have a few staple dishes I love using it to make.

Iron skillets are heavy. 😊 If you don't want to take care of it, donate it. If you camp a lot, cast iron is great for that. I agree with Dawn the Minimal Mom regarding single use items, like waffle irons, bread makers, pizza scissors, juicers, even garlic presses! I've kept my apple peeler/slicer/corer because my granddaughters love it, but everything else single use had to go 😊. I just don’t have the bandwidth. I did keep 2 sets of measuring spoons because I do bake a bit and don't run my dishwasher every day because I live alone. I kept a few rubber/silicone scrapers for the same reason. I've kept original art, just a few throw blankets, and clocks, but that's really it. I get tired of moving the stuff.

I love cast iron for cooking the majority of my foods. Find a cleaning/reseasoning video to “reset” it. (I’ve only had to do this once when I found a rusty pan at my grandmas) then you should be good to go. For cleaning, I always make sure the pan is hot, rinse it under hot water, scrape when needed. Then I towel dry and cover the pan inside and out with a little olive oil (b/c that’s the only oil I use) and done! I’m also very brand loyal and only use Lodge cast iron b/c I know the quality is good!

Cook almost exclusively in cast iron, fry, bake, casseroles, even cakes. Treat it well and you can eliminate most other pans

In Australia, most people have kettles. They sit on the bench or stove with water in them. You don't need to empty and dry it all the time. This way we make cups of tea easily and/or instant coffee. Also handy when you have no hot water to wash up the dishes. :))

Love the teapot! It matches your kitchen decor. I have a yellow one that i only use for looks. I found a cast iron skillet at a consignment shop that i cleaned up and put to use. I did alittle research to see what brand it was. Turned out to be a 1940-50s Birmingham Stove and Range which is near where I live. Oh the meals that this skillet has cooked over the years!

I can go along with everything you said EXCEPT getting rid of the cast iron skillet. They are irreplaceable especially for cooking steaks & chops. The rusted bottom will clean off with plain steel wool. Don’t scrub with soap . Scrape hard bits off with a plastic scraper. Clean with a cloth & hot water. Dry immediately.

I have a wooden cutting board that I use for produce and a plastic one for meat. I don’t put the wooden one in soapy water but just wipe with a wet cloth. I clean now and again with a cut lemon and salt. I also have a special oil that I use on it once in a while.❤

You can just recure the cast iron. I have two and I love love love them. All I ever do is trot it over to the sink when it’s hot and sizzle it a bit with some water. Then “clean” it by rubbing it with a bit more oil. I store them in my oven. To me it’s easier than regular pans and the food is so much yummier. I also like how it can endure the worst of scratches or scrapes and you don’t need to worry about using metal utensils with it. You also can just leave food in it and go for a slow low reheat. (Instead of having to store it in yet another dish). You can also “bake fry” in them and avoid a lot of stovetop grease splatter. I find the other pots and pans more irksome tho. Like don’t dishwash it too much or it loses its special coating. Or don’t use metal utensils on it. Again. You’ll ruin the coating. Cast iron I think was made for someone like me. Lol. You don’t even need soap for it. 😅😅 Well other than the self draining pot for the pasta. Love that thing too Bcuz I don’t have to use a collander. Another thing I’m also loving is the Correlle tableware. The other thing I love is the Dawn sprayer soap foam stuff. I bot one bottle and now just remake my own. I would say for me just reducing the quantity to a manageable level and getting rid of “one special task” items and devices fixed most issues I had. Biggest thing also was just recognizing what I love and what I don’t love and throwing all my “shoulds” out the window with all the things I don’t love (or that don’t serve me well enough to have to bother with). I bot kitchen wood sealer. All I ever have to do is give it a fresh coat every now and then and my wooden cutting board marches on.

You can save your cast iron by reseasoning it. I basically only use cast iron and they are almost nonstick. You have to use oil and heat to get the best results cooking with one. Always make sure it's hot before adding meat or eggs. Good luck.

Yes, try the silicone waffle makers. They work great and you can make several at a time. I hate cleaning my food processor but I use it to make pie pastry.

Oh!!! I’m curious how the waffle molds work. I have one that’s like 10+ years old and it still works but if it ever gives out I’d be tempted to get the molds since they would take less space. I have a small kitchen so I’m always aware of that bringing things in etc

I use the Instapot a lot, but my partner hates using it. We do have a crock pot that I thought we could get rid of, but since he likes using it and we have room for both, we will keep both. We also have a rice cooker. I'm don't want to use all 3 for one meal since we don't currently have a dishwasher, but there are times when I could have used all 3. 😅

scrub the cast iron with a sos pad put on stove on med-high to dry. coat with Grape seed oil, wipe off. put in oven at 350 for 20 min. if it's sticky, repeat the grape seed oil and another 20 min in the oven. To wash, just use water and they sell these little chainmail scrubbers. rinse, scrub with water, put a little grape seed oil, wipe out set on med-high to dry. after a few uses like that your pan will be non stick and super easy to wash out. I say use Grape seed oil because it for High heat cooking. My pan is basically non stick now. I can even fry an egg over easy in it.

You can use lye-free soap on cast iron. You just have to remember to dry it really well and then heat it to evaporate any moisture left on it. Make sure that you season the pan from time to time.

I'm sure others have said it... you can totally save your cast iron skillet! I use mine daily and even travel with it if I'll be cooking elsewhere. 😂 We have one very nice wooden cutting board that I only cut non-meat products on. My husband oils the board once a month to keep it in good condition. I, too, am totally intimidated by the InstantPot and have never gotten one! I would LOVE to declutter more from our kitchen, but my husband (who only probably has time to cook 10% of the time) has an attachment to a lot of kitchen items...

I use my IP almost every day. Boil eggs for easy peel, make fabulous yoghurt, potatoes, stews, curries, pinhead oatmeal. I have a red wine stew in there right now. It was a learning curve at the beginning, but i love the 'set and forget' element. Brits also use an electric kettle all the time. I only use my cast iron frying pan for steak. High temp, good quick singe. Otherwise, no.

Instant pot is just a programmable pressure cooker. It cooks things more quickly. I like bamboo cutting boards, season it with food safe mineral oil. Many people have too many cookbooks and often only use a couple recipes from the book or not at all. Most recipes can be found online.

I have to have some “pretty” items out in the kitchen. I do limit it since I have a small kitchen but I still want it to feel warm and lived in. I like you though don’t want to have to clean/dust a lot of items. If I’m questioning the need for a kitchen item I put it in the spare room closet with a dated sticky note on it. If I don’t use it in 30 days (or longer) it is donated.

OMG, it's sooo funny how 3 of the 4 items in your thumbnail are must haves for me, LOL. But I totally understand the concept of what you are saying. If you like it and don't mind the maintenance, then keep it. If you really don't care that much about the item, and hate the maintenance, then toss it ;) And just a tip, it's actually a myth that you can't use soap and water on cast iron. Type in "cast iron myths" in KZbin and watch. The number one thing is to never leave it wet. Dry it completely right after you wash it. Get in all the nooks and crannies with your towel. And buy a chainmail scrubber for it, makes life so much better. But some of my best meals come from that pan, and it cannot be duplicated in any other pan. And made-from-scratch waffles are one of my favorite thing in the world, so yes, I'm willing to clean that pain in the butt thing, LOL. I also drink many cups of hot tea daily, and when the power goes out, I really want my tea kettle for my gas stove top. It's safer than trying to pour boiling water out of a pan.

I have cast iron pans that are wonderful, but they take so much special care as well as special techniques while using. I'm considering getting rid of them, as bad as that might be. It would be a relief to just use a regular pan and wash it. I also tried my counter empty and thought it needed just a couple of cute things on it. Not much, but something. It's still very uncluttered and usable.

YES- I feel the same about cast irons. My partner LOVES them. However i refuse to clean them - what do u mean can't be soaped up!!??? 😮 hahaha - it hurts my head. Soooo we always had them dirty on the stove top. Drove me crazy!! So I purchased a cast iron pan stand that I can tuck them away in a cupboard and he can clean them he goes to coom with them

Clean off with steel wool and water that should take it back to orginal conditions. Next heat in oven or stove top to dry it completely. Then to season it hubby uses a thin layer of lard then in oven at 300 for about an hour until it turns black he does this 3-4 times. Hope this helps you

Just season it again. Put it in the oven for a while and the rust will go away. You may have to look up the right temp and time. After I clean mine I just stick it right back in the oven even if the oven is still warm.

You should give the waffle things a go. I’ve got a sandwich maker like that & it’s a real pain to clean. I prefer sandwich/toaster bags instead. I don’t cook from scratch & cook nearly everything In the microwave. If it can’t be cooked/heated in the microwave I don’t want to know. I can’t imagine a kitchen without a kettle, that’s the norm in a British kitchen. I can never understand why most people in the US don’t have one. I hate any decorative stuff on my worktops. The only thing that is decorative is a Winnie the Pooh cookie jar. It brightens up my kitchen.

@SimplyThisLife cast iron NEVER gets bad - steel wool and scrub scrub scrub. towel dry, add some oil and put in oven at high heat for an hour. let cool then wipe but DO NOT wash.

Consider an electric kettle instead of a stove top one, they're more efficient and it turns itself off when it boils. I've only ever wiped down the outside and always fill it back up to 1 cup for the next person - no need to empty. (I live in a soft water area). I've no microwave / coffee machine, the kettle keeps us in tea/coffee and used at least 6 times a day. This is the only thing besides soap/brush that's out on my counters (but kitchen is very small, about 8ft * 8ft, with two doors and its also where my washing machine is! I've to keep my fridge in the dining room). No dishwasher here, so the things you consider high maintenance make no difference to me. No microwave / no waffle iron / very few appliances and they're kept in cupboards. Cast iron can be re-seasoned, fear not. Just google re-seasoning.

I would have less on my counters if I had a pantry & the space to put things away. I made room for my toaster to go away but I have my Bosch mixer, caddy with utensils, bowl of fruit, catch all/ drop zone basket & espresso machine on my counters. It’s more than I’d like and I should go thru all my cupboards and see if I can make room to put more away but for now that’s how it is.

Cast iron lasts forever. You can season it again. Put some kind of fat in it- oil, lard, etc. preheat oven to 450 and bake for 1 hour

Husband bought an Instantpot because of peer pressure at work. It is NEVER used. I don’t understand the appeal. My slow cooker and I are best friends. It allows me to make dinner at 10:30 in the morning before my kids have gone evil. What does the instant pot get me? 😂😂

It gets you meat cooked in one hour that is tender, frozen to cooked through and not under done, potatoes cooked all the way through in under 14 min., all the things that you have to watch the stove for you never do with the slow cooker, so many uses along with yogurt, sauté mode then you can dump everything else but the dairy at the end so stinking easy just because it has a learning curve it doesn’t mean it isn’t worth it

For the love of God..... don't get rid of the cast iron!!!!! Its not high maintenance, just requires regular maintenance! Hate plastic cutting boards too, can you really get them clean? Girl I agree with getting rid of bulky appliances like a bread maker when don't ever use it but regularly make bread. For the gunky stuff around your waffle iron, just get in there with a magic eraser

I see you have a glass top stove. I would not cook with a cast iron pan on a glass top stove. To clean the cast iron, take a paper towel and put some olive oil on it, doesn't take much. Rub it on the pan all over including the handle. Put it in the oven at 350 for about 15 minutes. You can turn off the oven and leave the pan in the oven to cool.

Your cast iron is fine. Scrub the rust off, dry it, rub it with some canola or avocado oil (on the whole thing, bake at like 500? for an hour once the oil isn’t tacky it’s done. To clean just wipe it out with a paper towel… if shit is baked on just scrub it with steel wool, rinse, and dry, then add a small amount of oil and rub it around. Honestly there is probably someone in your area who will reseason your cast iron for you if you don’t want to do it yourself.

juicer is SOOO worth 10 minutes of cleaning it and isn't a big deal. blending and juicing are 2 different things - blender is too much fiber and juicing removes that so all you get is the nutrient dense juice. you don't need the extra fiber or you'll be in your bathroom more than you would like

I only use wooden cutting boards and even have one that belonged to my grandmother. They are better for your knives. Cleaning it is very easy. After use, wipe with a cloth, then pour a dash of vinegar (kitchen vinegar, not cleaning vinegar) over it, dry with a cloth and then sprinkle some salt over it. Then wipe it off again and it is hygienically clean. Once a week I pour a few drops of olive oil or some sesame oil over the board and rub it in. The oil prevents it from splitting. Never use water or soap! If you have used a lemon for cooking, you can also use the lemon afterwards to clean the board. Citrus fruit is also anti-bacterial. The kitchen is the heart of the house, so make it cozy. And you won't die if there's some dust and dirt. Better than a sterile bare cold environment. My grandmother turned 104 and she always said I have clean plates to serve my food, so what does it matter if the floor is not spick and span. You don't have to eat off the floor. My grandmother's kitchen was always cozy, messy and warm.

@@zeinakhater2064 Baking soda and kitchen vinegar kill more bacteria than water and soap ;-) Sprinkle baking soda over the cutting board, rub it in well and then pour vinegar over it. It cleans everything down to the smallest pores. And well, I would use a large dinner plate for cutting chicken, etc. This can be put in the dishwasher and I think that is even better. Use your wooden cutting boards for everything except meat. I don't eat meat myself. But vinegar and baking soda have traditionally been the best hygienic cleaning agents even more so than bleach.

It’s definitely not a frugal way but I use disposable cutting boards! I friggen hate cleaning cutting boards. My husband uses them for everything and never cleans it so I got rid of our cutting boards and bought disposable and I just toss them! You can rinse and use a few times so we do sometimes too.

Your cast iron can be restored but why bother. Donate it. Someone who loves cast iron can restore it. I find cast iron too heavy and don’t enjoy it. The only thing on my kitchen counters is the coffee pot because Hubby drinks throughout the day. If he only drank a cup or two in the morning I would store it out of sight. At the sink there is one hand soap pump and one sponge. My sponge holder in the sink broke so as soon as I purchase another then the decorative soap pump will be the only item there.
