The last scene truly sums it up. “We ALL complete (die). Maybe NONE of us really understand what we’ve lived through, or feel we’ve had enough TIME....” I think, at some point, in everyone’s life, we wonder why we are here, and at another time, we all feel we didn’t get enough time, or wasted the time given to us. It’s very simplistic, but powerful as well. Absolutely beautiful story. ✌️

They don't runaway because the book is a microcosm of life and the journey to death. Its a metaphor saying that we cant runaway from death, you cant take the film so literal, read the book and you will understand more

They've never known anything else its their entire life, they don't have parents or families where would they go? It's unimaginable to them.

it's meant to be more similar to a Japanese society, which is one of Ishiguro's influences. They wouldn't run away because although they found it to be a terrible thing, they had a distinct sense of belonging and being a cog in a big machine. They tried to appeal to Madame, but other than that, what else could they do? They hadn't been socialised as they had spent all their life in Hailsham and the Cottages, no idea of 'running away' had ever even been explained to them. :)

For me part of the movie is about how people/society/parents....etc shape the lives of young children to be what is expected of them to be without given further choice or will, which would recreate the cycle again for their children and so on.... the movie and the writer are brilliant

They would never run away from their fate. In a way they are like many slaves in pre-Civil War America. Except for a few like Harriet Tudman and Toby (Kunta Kinte) none ever attempted to run away. A system was in place which horribly punished run-aways' with beatings, mutilation and possibly death. A renegade slave would have no food, support system or shelter. In many cases slaves (and even former slaves post emancipation) remained with their masters and mistresses. Mentally they probably felt it was safer than facing the unknown world off the plantation. Actually, in some cases the slaves shared the same blood as their masters since the master would sleep with and impregnate his female slaves'. That was shown on Roots with Kizzy and her master. Kizzy had a baby boy that way. In this movie "Never Let Me Go" the children are technically slaves who are grown as organ doners. Should any escape they would never be able to get a job or even welfare because they do not have any ID. They would simply be recaptured if they attempted that. The best an escapee would be able to manage would be to get employed under the grid which would be prostitution, becoming a day laborer or doing jobs no one else wants to do. That would be having to keep a lower profile than illegal immigrants. The escapee from such a system would live under fear of recapture for the rest of their lives. Maybe a lucky few might find shelter with people or an organization against the system (modern day abolitionists) in that society.

It's very similar. Every society has an underclass that we'd like to forget about. Or we'd like to do something to help the underclass, without losing the benefits they offer to our society.

I can’t understand why did Ishiguro allowed them to throw some crucial scenes in the book away. For example, last scene of the movie is a completely nonsense if you haven’t read the book, I can give pretty much examples like that. I think the most important problem is the movie didn’t be able to show us the dystrophy of the book. The movie is not elucidator enough to give us background informations of the Hailsham, cottages and the lives of carers and donors. Actually it’s a good movie, but I expected more details of the story. Because, the movie is very one-dimensional if we compare it to the book. So, I’m not a big fan of this movie, but I really am a huge fun of that book. In my opinion, the book is one of the best books that I’ve read.

One of my favorite living writers! The Buried Giant is my favorite after RotD & NLMG. The movie didn't quite make it for me, tho. Interestingly, George Lucas explored many similar themes in the Clone Wars tv series.

I read it and I still don't know why on Earth they don't try to run away... So don't call people idiots, when clearly it's you who's the idiot. Part of the point of the book is to have some mysteries, and this is one of them

@alankritadatt3115
@alankritadatt3115 4 жыл бұрын
Kathy was looking at the magazines as she thought that she was the clone of a prostitute or a sex worker because of her "abnormal" sexual urges. Ruth just thought that she was lonely and didn't have any sexual experiences so she was curious about how it worked. Only Tommy understood that kathy was looking for her original. In the movie at least. The book is a bit different.

@bunozen1 Couldn't agree more. Possibly the worst movie I ever saw. The camerawork was beautiful though you have to give it that but the whole story is incredibly (in every sense of the word) awful. The movie itself is not bad, good actors, nice images, etc. but that story is just horrible. Horribly bad quality vise.
