The combination of a strong cast and the Harold Robins novel's fast-paced story line made this an engaging and hard-hitting cinematic work, albeit underrated by critics at the time. I watched it twice in the theater decades back and would still buy a video copy if I could find one. John Drew Barrymore was an all-time great actor in keeping with his Barrymore lineage of accomplished actors. Unfortunate that ultimately his life took a turn for a very sad end.
