This is the point where Ellie becomes THE Ellie, sadly. Such an amazing episode and, give Bella Ramsey an Emmy! Her acting throughout the series is incredible and her acting at the end was just amazing! Pedro's as well, amazing as Joel. The baby girl at the end just broke me.

Omg at the end of this during the part where she kills David you could just feel Ellie’s fear, trauma, rage, and sadness at the same time. She was just in complete shock after what happened. And when Joel held her and said “it’s ok baby girl it’s me Joel!” after the way she started mumbling hysterically and then hugged him and started crying.. I have no words. That was so realistic. Bella Ramsey’s performance was amazing!

Quote trivia: Tess & Episode 2!! Whew this episode was INTENSE. As a huge fan of the game I knew what was gonna happen but it still made me panic during every scene. That torture scene was crazy good. My impression of it was They kidnapped the only thing that was keeping that menace locked up in Joel’s heart and when they took her it was straight demon mode. My favorite because it ended on a high note and a very touching and sweet scene after all the carnage. I can be pretty stoic about deaths of likable characters (I take myself out of immersion as a defense mechanism and I just get pissed off at the writers for killing someone off the show) but an uplifting bonding scene will have me tearing up. Joel was the emotionally scarred, reluctant guardian for a child and now he'll do literally anything for his adopted daughter's well being and she the same for him.

This episode gives us some great insight into Joel, or at least 'Old Joel' when he and Tommy did terrible things to survive. Ellie tells Joel that 'Men are coming, if anyone comes down here, you kill them.' and that's all the information he was working with! He wakes up to a guy coming in and kills him with no questions asked or answered, just goes to work and then it's straight to torture time to figure out where Ellie might be. That's someone you seriously don't want to contend with.

love rewatching these reactions again since we won’t get TLOU S2 for a while. I won’t get Bella’s screams out of my head for a while. David preys on her worst fear-ending up alone. I feel like she took all of her pent up rage, fear and grief onto him: each thwack was for Henry, Sam, Tess, Riley, her mom, and for Joel. I think this was the first episode where we’re reminded as the audience that yes, she’s such a brave, mature teenager, but she’s also just a little kid who needed her daddy in this moment after such a traumatic experience. My heart broke. Loved when Joel grabbed Ellie’s bag-it’s such a dad move, and you know had he been too late and Ellie had been killed, he’d want to have it as his last piece of HER. He probably thought she was dead (he saw her bag, the horse and the bodies), but he still didn’t lose hope. Pieces of people he’s lost bring him comfort (the watch from Sarah, the butterfly stickers in his room for Sarah, Frank’s flannel, Bill’s coffee, and he makes the rock memorial for Tess). I also loved the parallel: David considers himself a “father” to his people, but one of the first things he does when he has Ellie is strip her of her hat and coat and leaves her to freeze in the (probably frigid) kitchen. Juxtaposed with Joel, her actual father, one of the first things he does when he sees Ellie is notice she’s shivering and bundles her up in his coat to try to get her warm. I think we would all love a big bear hug from Pedro Pascal when we’re frightened. He just seems like the kindest, gentlest human being. ❤

His wound did not look the same. In the first shot before the antibiotics it was literally leaking out pus and looked pretty nasty. After the first shoot it was pretty much cleaned up, but still inflamed & swollen.

Thanks for the review. As far as Joel is concerned the attack started at the University and he was continuing that battle if you think about it. It's the same conflict. Joel is an antihero all the way through. The brutality is shocking to me but understandable and killing all 3 men seems quite pragmatic. It's been days and they are still trying to kill him so he needs to remove the threat that started when he was attacked at the university. Ellie is a bit more complicated. She hasn't really killed except Riley. She is a small woman who knows she is at a massive physical disadvantage to the threats around her. So her fear is transformed to rage to accomplish what she needs to do. Fortunately it was enough to get the job done and she was training at a military school to, as she told Riley, kill Fireflies. Use of violence is expected of her in her world. Where people get confused is in trying to apply current day morality and behavior to their situation.

Definitely cannot apply current day and societal morality for this situation. The world has ended and just surviving is such a hard thing to do. Joel knows that the men will keep coming after him if he lets them live, so it only makes sense to get rid of them. From seeing all perspectives, if makes even more sense to me since Alec attacked Joel first at the University. They were just trying to leave and Alec came swinging instead of talking. Ellie has been forced to face the harsh realities of life in this episode, and I feel she's going to be affected quite a lot by it :(

The acting is so on point.... If you watched the scene where Ellie is on the table and are debating whether she is infected or not look at her eyes and the expression as sea sizing up the situation and she realizes that the cleaver is within reach.... It's subtle..... But she realizes that there's an opening for her to escape..... It's small but it's that little attention to detail that you subconsciously pick up and make seems like that much more intense.

Ellie has flirted with violence throughout this entire show, even being shocked by shooting Bryan in episode 4. Now she's actually killed someone up close and so viciously, how will this affect her going forward? Is the violence just a necessary tool of survival in this world? Because Tommy said to Joel, there is always another way! Or is she just becoming the personification of Joel... Truly becoming his daughter? Correct on the quote! I do think part of what Ellie and Joel do is for survival. Though there may be other ways of dealing with it, sometimes when you're pressed for time, it's normal to not take a while to ponder what the most morally correct course of action is. I feel like what they do is for survival 😊

And now that she's done the most violent thing she could do, how do you think Joel will react to it? Because it looks like he doesn't actually know what happened in detail in there. And would Eliie even tell him? Or just bury that trauma like Joel has buried his? Will they help each other to get past their traumas together by bonding properly as father and daughter? So many questions! lol

I get what you’re saying. There’s a difference between doing what’s necessary to survive, and actually liking violence. Before this episode, Ellie *liked* violence. She tried everything to get her hands on a gun, she experimented on the infected that got trapped in that basement, and she was fascinated by the dead man in her flashback with Riley. But now, she’s come very close to being killed or possibly worse by David and for the first time, she has to kill a human man to survive. And there’s two ways it could go in the aftermath: either she realizes that violence is not as fascinating as she previously thought it to be, it’s heavy and real and scary. OR, her trauma causes her to become more bloodthirsty, to exact revenge on anyone who poses a threat, because she never wants to get hurt again. The second game definitely explores this question, so we shall soon see the path ellie goes down.

Oh my God, I think I got equally as emotional when you said this was potentially your favourite series of all-time and is, at least, in the running there or thereabouts as I have done watching the show. It is an absolute joy to see people get into this story that means so much to me. I am still of the opinion that, as good as the show is, the game vastly surpasses it but because I have been so in love with the game for so long, I think that I was always going to feel that way and so my hope for the show has always been simply that people who do not know the game fall in love with these characters and this narrative like I did, irrespective of the medium. So watching this react series has been a big part of why I have felt fulfilled by the adaptation despite the impossible standards I set for it beforehand.

The Last of Us is not a story about a zombie apocalypse per se. I mean it is, but at its core it's a story about loss, what it takes to survive, and finding love. Joel, ever since he lost Sarah, has had a void in his heart. And because of how he's lost Sarah he's been afraid to try to fill that void because all he knows is loss and he doesn't want to experience the pain of losing a loved one again. Which is why he was so distant and guarded with Ellie. But this is the first episode where you can tell he loves her like a daughter. And just like a biological daughter he'd do anything to protect her. Including letting the Berserk Mode Joel out. And Ellie has only ever wanted someone to love her and want companionship and Joel is finally that person she's wanted all her life.

After i finished school, i took a job doing the most unspeakable things that i couldnt really talk about (involved a lot of state/govt and military jurisdictions). My daughter was in elementary school but i told her later stories here and there. Id never want her to see that side of humanity but she knows its there b/c I was knee deep in it as well. She changes in this episode, childhood is left behind and she has learned to be on her own for once. Ive played the game before, but its incredible seeing Bella and Joel bringing this story to life.

This chapter was my very favorite from the game. Naturally the game involves a lot more avoidance and combat - the section where Ellie tries to lead them away from Joel on her horse, then gets knocked off the horse is where I really got engaged with what was happening.

OHHH, I just realized why David told James the penicillin “wasn’t a code.” It’s because in the very beginning when they were talking outside, they were referring to what food they had left, calling it “venison” and saying one of the guys “found some more deer”, when clearly they both knew it wasn’t deer….

(Disclaimer: Just so you know my perspective, I haven't played the game.) As relieved as I was that Ellie had gained the upper hand and killed David, I was also absolutely devastated for her in that moment. Any innocence she still had was destroyed by what David did and attempted to do to her and by the fact that he forced her to hack him to death to avoid it. Ellie just lost a part of herself and will be forever changed and traumatised by these events. That guy was a monster. Joel, on the other hand, is an absolute weapon. The way he arose from his death bed and took out the men left behind to search for him, despite being wounded and nowhere near fully fit, was quite simply epic. As for that interrogation scene.... well, let's just say he wasn't messing around. I totally expected that Joel would burst in at the last minute to save Ellie, but I'm so glad they actually had Ellie save herself. She went beast mode. She's a true survivor. She is Joel's daughter. Anyway, I can't fault this episode and can't wait for the finale. P.S. If someone feels the need to tell you how good they are it's probably because they've shown you otherwise and as the old saying goes, "judge people by what they do, not what they say."

Yeah, I think everyone initially expected Joel to save Ellie, which would be fine sure... But the way the game/show gets her to be out of options and have to save herself like that, it's more realistic. Sometimes you're just going to have to help yourself, and it's going to be horrific, but that's the price of survival.

This episode might have been the first time where I really noticed the accelerated pace but for non-players it probably just felt like an action-packed whirlwind of an episode. But even with that minor quibble they nailed all of the important moments from this chapter, especially David revealing he knows who Ellie is and Joel's interrogation. Bella Ramsey has done an amazing job with Ellie's progression, the scenes in the cage and on the butcher's block were absolutely perfect. I'm just hoping that with how much stuff should be happening in the finale it is like 80-90 minutes long, will definitely need moments to breathe

The guys were tied up, it's no longer self defense. Tommy said they murdered innocent people that's why he left. Joel didn't answer Ellie when Ellie asked Joel if he killed any innocent people meaning he did. All of these people are doing what they do in order to keep the ones they care about alive. Joel always gets the "you do what you have to in an apocalypse" pass. Alec was out miles away from their home scrounging for food and supplies for his starving daughter. All he had was a baseball bat when he saw two people with guns. He had friends with him who also had no guns or they would have shot at Joel and Ellie. In the apocalypse. it would be very easy to view the ones with guns as the threat. For a really dark turn though, what if Joel was allergic to penicillin?
