Bro m from Ladakh It's -20 -30°C here in leh also I too have a diesel car I'll suggest you something which would save your time and energy. Wrap your car's bonnet with a thick blanket At night. Then see the magic in morning. Your car will start in one attempt. And yeah cover the exhaust pipe too

I am from lahaul and i did the same with my thar crde covered up with heavy blanket and cover the silencer from where the wind can come and then cover the entire car with fabric and before sleeping just start for 10_15 minute and you will never face the problem again never use hot water in thar crde you can loosen up the packaging of the car ...hot water are good for sumo and gypsy... not for thar

I have old generation Thar, it starts in first crank up to -10 degrees without any issue. For -20~-22 degrees, ensure 1) Cover whole vehicle with a Tarp (atleast engine bay) 2) Keep Diesel Tank full upto the brim 3) Position vehicle facing the sun and attempt crank after 8~9 am. Following these things, vehicle will start in first crank and leave engine running till temp gauge starts moving, You are good to drive.

You will damage your engine as the lubricants freeze without adding antifreeze. You may be succesful in starting but till the optimum teperature is reached, lubricants will not melt and not run in the system, damaging the lining of piston cylinder and valves..

To start any diesel engine in extreme cold weather. You must cycle the key to on and wait for 5 seconds, then repeat the process 3 times before cranking the engine. I guarantee it will start. Every diesel engine is equipped with an intake heater or glow plugs. If you cycle your key at least 3 times... you give it a chance to warm up enough to aid the engine in starting.

Diesel anti freeze when u use in cold temperatures,it help from ur jeep,car lines from freezing and use 12 volt battery maintenance.u will never have problem in cold weather.Thats what I use in canada/America winter driving camping.

I am planning to visit Lahaul and would use ABRO anti gel diesel additive and snowchains..what else I can do to avoid diesel starting issue... Or in worst condition I would not switch off the ignition ( considering 1 to 1.5 litre diesel consumption per hour)... Please suggest. Many thanks for sharing this wonderful experience. Let me tell you one unsafe way to solve this issue, in himachal in peak winters I saw many sarkari jeep drivers (20 to 25 years ago) using coal angeethi under engine to heat engine slowly but make sure no flames. This warmup engine and other liquids slowly and no risk to engine.

Being a resident of kashmir i would suggest u one thing that never ever start the engine when everything gets frozen . Before start the engine u should melt down the frozen coolant in ur engine and be sure it is in liquid form otherwise u can face a blast in engine causing engine sideplates busted.
