It was a very common thing for a 2 2/3" stop to be labelled as 3" in very many Victorian organs or even earlier.

The organ in my church originally built for a Boston mansion by Hook and Hastings in 1879 and later rebuilt by George Hutchins in 1894 has a Twelfth labeled 3' on the Great Manual.@@OrganicVisitations

Lovely organ sound, especially with good quality head phones on. You really seemed to be enjoying this visitation. I wish you would play a little longer after showing us the organ. Thanks.

I thought "1683" was a typo at first! Fascinating instrument with quite a history. There are quite a few organs with the Twelfth marked as 3ft, in the same way as some have Pedal Quints marked as 5ft instead of 5 1/3ft. Lovely to see the name "Dennis Thurlow" in the NPOR listing as having voiced this organ - I knew him, he was my piano teacher's son-in-law! A true gentleman and a fine voicer. Small world.

Always informative, and fascinating to be shown all these interesting instruments, though sad many of them face such uncertain futures.

I like having the mixture in the swell! Couple the bassoon and the mixture (or even make it a full swell) with the swell box closed to your great principal chorus, and that will give a nice final verse hymn registration without being too overpowering. You can work the swell shades open on the last phrase for a triumphant close to a hymn. I use something similar to this quite often at my churches

I know some Dutch organs have 3 foot stops. Another nice organ! Thanks for the great videos! On a side note it seems interesting that organ builders have never converted to the metric system for pipe length. 🤣

I think the COLD church was, in part, responsible for the tuning 🥶 Not a great time of year to be visiting old buildings

3 foot is really just 2 ⅔ foot. Hill used this marking quite often for the Twelfth in the Great chorus.

When I use my iPad virtual organ I use the Celeste, Salicional and Gamba and the oboe because the oboe gives almost a sub octave affect. I was wondering if you could explain why?.

I didn't think the tuning of the trumpet was very good! Do you organists not do this yourselves? I used to play an organ in Bergen (Norway) which had a trumpet on the Great, a clarinet on the Choir, an Oboe on the Swell, and a 16' Horn on the Pedal. I would leave the principles and flutes (and mixtures) for the organ tuners when they came, but there was an understanding that organists did the reeds themselves - because they are always going out of tune.
@OrganicVisitations
@OrganicVisitations 9 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, at this time of year in the UK, churches are VERY cold (they won’t turn the heating on for my visit and understandably so given the cost of energy!). Reeds are particularly vulnerable to temperature changes, hence your organ tuner would, or should, ask for the church to be up to Sunday morning temperature prior to tuning. This organ was a good example of how the tuning drifts in a cold church. I occasionally tap into tune the odd pipe if it is noticeably out of tune but generally leave that for the organ tuner. Thanks for watching and I hope you’re subscribed 👍😊🎹

@@OrganicVisitations I make a strict distinction between reeds and labial (flue) pipes. I don't touch the latter with a disinfected barge post. On my present organ, there are no reeds, but on those organs in Norway that do have reeds it simply is not feasible to get the organ builders in every time they are out of tune. One must gently tap the tuning rod up or down. If one doesn't do this, then I suspect that most of our organs would very soon end up like this trumpet you were playing - or even worse. And it wouldn't take too long before they did either!
@OrganicVisitations
@OrganicVisitations 9 ай бұрын
@@organisten Correct way to tune reeds - well said! Although flu can be easily tuned using the correct tool…in the correct temperature…and by not allowing your warm hand to touch them (the pipe, that is) 👍

@@OrganicVisitations well it was an "unwritten" agreement between me as the organist and the organ builder, so I think respect comes into it too. I acknowledge that the organ builder is the expert and qualified to do this. You mention the odd pipe you might tune. I too, but *only* if it is really bad, will make an exception with, for example stopped pipes. Sometimes the "hat" needs a little adjustment. Nevertheless, in principle (if you'll pardon the pun) I generally try to stay well clear of these altogether. Oh, and it is a long time ago now, but on one occasion - though I can't remember where it was such a long time ago - I actually took the offending pipe that refused to stop playing, out of its sound board socket - until the organ builder did come to fix the problem!
