He only slipped due to socks. But I've always heard the dumbest arguments against barefoot lifting. "What if you drop a dumbell on your foot?" Right, because my vans are going to stop a 50 pound chunk of steel from crushing my foot.

they'd make a difference with a 10 or 25 though, probably. they'll also possibly prevent your toes from being severed and certainly curtail the amount of blood you spill all over the floor. it's not 100% all about whether your foot get injured or not. i've worked in gyms, i've had weights of different denominations drop/roll/bounce their way onto my feet in various circumstances. I guarantee wearing footwear vs not wearing footwear can absolutely be the difference between minor injury and no injury.

I agree. He was an idiot for squatting on a slippery surface with only socks. I always train with just socks, however it is always on a surface that has friction that I will be able to stabilise on

I squatted wide af (like, double shoulder width) and pulled sumo barefoot for like 6 years and never had my foot slip. I have no idea how this happened.

I use sock-shoes. Basically a sock with a proper and very grippy sole.

I squat and deadlift barefoot because it's comfortable, I wear shoes for everything else though, because walking around the gym barefoot feels wrong

Also, barefoot in socks is garbage on any surface because there's an additional friction interface that's always worse than foot on ground. I just wear barefoot shoes tho.

I’m a barefoot squatter/deadlifter but my gym has a clause in the signup agreement that says that shoes should be worn at all times so I can’t squat when there are people there :(

The real reaseon he slipped was the ground was polished happened to me on a deadlift pad before where there was wood fucking sucks but I got the lift but slipped forward.

Guy has horrible hip and ankle mobility, not the floor not the socks. I squat in same wooden floor using socks, no issue. However, I do have excellent hip and ankle mobility, I can almost sit on the ground.

Or wear "barefoot" shoes. I lift in my Xero shoes, they are basically just a thin piece of rubber to protect my feet.

I like the speed force with the insole removed. At the time I bought them (2 years ago(!)) they were the thinnest shoes they had. The Prios are also good, although they are a little thicker. But both are a Zero drop, wide toe box, and extremely flexible shoes.

As someone who squats in socks ive never had this problem. I think the material of the floor (hardwood/basketball court style floor) is what caused this, whereas my gym has a gripy rubber floor.

That's not barefoot, bro. Lifting on a slick surface like that is idiotic, and doing it in socks is doubly so. Squatting ACTUALLY barefoot on a rubber gym floor is fine, provided it's not a public facility in which people aren't going to appreciate you going barefoot.

Look into barefoot style shoes, gives you the grip but also allows your toes room and not crammed up in the toe box Chris Duffin has a shoe company called BEARFOOT Athletics, check them out

Lifting weights while being barefoot is just plain stupid. The only 2 good reasons to ever lift barefoot is if you brought an excercise specific shoe (like a running/squat shoe) or if you're unable to buy a cheap boxing/deadlift/flat sole shoe. Wearing shoes is more hygenic, provide better grip and provide some protection. That 5mm difference in starting height on Deadlift is not that important.

If I could be bare foot at the gym I would do it but I know it’s frowned upon. I do keep my socks on and depending on the material of the sock especially polyester socks have almost no grip to the platform. I have much better grip using cotton socks. It has me thinking of perhaps using grip socks with rubber padding would do anything…

Socks make your feet very slippery if you only have socks on your feet. Barefoot whitout socks that would not have happened. Plus he's squatting on a pretty slippery surface

Well I think you just shouldn't try to Squat or Deadlift on the platforms in socks, those platforms are slick, if he was on the rubber floor most gyms have he'd of been fine

I squat better with really tight shoes on. I will lace my Chuck Taylors up all the way and tighten them as much as I can. Tightness is very important I think.

I have pronated feet so I ruin my correctional shoes when I squat in them. I am not sure if barefoot is any better on my ankle joints, but that’s what I go with for squats.

I have a home gym so its literal bare foot squat on rubber mats... that said I think I do better with shoes on but choose to do bare foot to help stretch my ankles a little, plus im lazy

Dude, that gym you lift in seems like a mainstream gym and then there you are squating 50 plates of 45lbs. Are there any plates left for others when you lift? Do you bring your own? Do they bring out extra plates every time you go in? Maybe no one lifts in there, just you?

I prefer squatting (and deadlifting) in bare feet/socks, but I would never do either in socks on a smooth slippery surface lol, that guy was asking for it.

Sometimes it’s better depending on the shoe you have. But yea. If you have a pair of vans or converse or any other flat shoe that isn’t gummy then it’s kinda pointless

When going for a true max in competition, I prefer shoes but sometimes, going socks only helps me really work on that bottom position that I'm struggling with (narrow stance squatter with extremely immobile ankles).

He wasn't barefoot. He was wearing socks. Of course, socks might slide on floors. That won't happen when you're barefoot. In fact, barefoot will allow you to literally grip the floor with your feet and stay tight.

Some people say that to lift barefoot you have to do foot strengthening exercises first. If anyone does that get back to me cause i don’t know anyone who squats 4 plates or more regularly without shoes and hasn’t experienced some effect on foot structure or health.
