Fun fact: There actually was a war where two enemies stopped fire for a bit during Christmas I think it was, in their trench, played cards and told each other stories about they're families and sang. Dash reminded me of this story, don't remember which year or what allies where going at it but read about it a while ago, so yeah it is the answer, it's just the generals and the ones that don't step foot on the field that give the orders to shoot, or be shot.
