But look... Now he has a new shovel, just a bit smaller!
@katebloggs8243 Жыл бұрын
I agree. Would make more sense to use those tool skills and ideas to turn something else into the final shovel, something that had lost its usefullness, like a milk can where half of it is rusted away. This shovel here was downcycled instead of upcycled. Not a big deal by itself, but if lots of people do what this video encourages, well, that gets to be serious.... (edit: fixed misspelling of "lits" to "lots")
@jacobhall1488 Жыл бұрын
@@katebloggs8243 I love the term "down cycled".. Ha ha. Never heard that before, but it perfectly explains his wasted effort. And if we want to talk environmental affects, best bet would have been if he put it in s bin for metal recycling.

Or you can save two hours of your life and buy the same thing at the store...
@jacobhall1488 Жыл бұрын
@@philllsxga.7737 Yes. Now I will say I recently learned that a little bit the hard way. Years back I replaced the shovel handle and it was still economical to do so. So I had another shovel that had been broken for a while and sitting in the garage. It turned out that it was a fiberglass handle with a collar holding the fiberglass in place onto the top of the shaft of the metal part of the shovel. It took a ridiculous amount effort to get that off. What started as a quick project with my 11-year-old on a lazy weekend turned into a huge endeavor. I didn't know how the fiberglass handle was assembled and that there's a wooden core inside of it. And then trying to push it out from the other direction I got a chisel stuck so it was a comedy of errors on my part. We finally just dremeled off the metal collar and then drilled out the wood poor inside of the fiberglass outer portion. So now we had the blade ready to take to the store and I looked at Home Depot and Lowe's to see that they both had handles in stock. They were both similarly priced. We went to the store and pick up the handle and it was literally like a dollar more for just the handle that was for a whole new shovel. Now, I have a strong handle and I have it on a good sturdy heavy duty blade. And the new cheaper shovel was much thinner and I probably would have worn out the blade rather quickly. The best thing I have though is a young son who now knows, short of the comedy of errors we had getting the old piece out, that you can replace the tool handle. And I showed him the value proposition. I explained him that we were only going to do this so that he can learn how to repair shovel and he would have to check in the future for some other tool with a more expensive metal head on it if it would be worth it to replace just the handle or not. But it opens up his mind too that he can fix other things rather than just throw them away and fill up a landfill. Now the guy in this video basically makes the case for not trying to upcycle anything because he really just downcycled it and made something that's totally useless and much worse than it was to begin with, particularly since he already owned all the tools he used to make this piece of crap tool. But in my case doing it once and letting my son see how a shovel is assembled and see how you need the handle grain to go to certain way different things like that, it was worth a few bucks and my time. And then from there you have to make a case-by-case decision in the future
