Thanks Tony. When I boil my eggs I use the water as an added source of minerals for the garden. I also boil my eggshells instead of baking them. It does the sterilization plus it doesn't heat the house as much as the oven does. Much Love

Omg this was super interesting. I knew eggshells were good for plants because of calcium, but did not know about the other trace elements and organic matter. I’ve just been crumbling them up into tiny pieces and adding them to compost pile. Bit off topic, but I love your jumper, it looks so nice and warm.

Hello Tony, I've tried eggshells to keep the slugs from my plants and indeed it didn't work at all, they even ate all the leaves of my gooseberry and avoided all the thorns doing so. That was in my back garden last year, now most of those plants are placed on my allotment and I'm going for the calcium treatment now for sure and I do love all those tips you're giving, not only to say they don't work but also explaining why they don't help a lot. Thank you so much for the food of thought(s) you're giving me and the options I have to reduce the slug problem(s) I also watched the video about nematodes on slugs and making your own nematodes juice, I'll have to see where and when I can find such slugs that are already infected because I do want to stay as eco friendly as I can and am open for all the suggestions there are. Wishing you and your loved ones an amazing weekend. Greets Valeria.

You can also eat them after you powder them, to ensure you have enough calcium,. In grade school we took them, made a face on them and planted grass seeds for hair! It was a grand experiment for an 8 year old and taught us about the magic of life!

Cheers Tony. Just started experimenting with egg shells. But only on 2 tomato plants - one has egg shells in the bottom of the planting hole and the other has a whole egg that was cracked so it didn't go yukky. But I think I will adopt your cook first (or seeing jan's comment - boil) to kill any bacteria first. Do you have a separate grinder for garden use?

I use egg shells in my homemade 'mineral water' for plants. Mix 1 Tb powdered egg with 1 Tb vinegar and let it gas off for 30 minutes. Add that to 5 gallons of water, 1 Tb Epsom salt and 1 tsp sea salt. Stir and let it rest for a few hours, then water your beds a month before planting. It will take healthy soil biology about 3 months to break down the minerals into a form plants can use.

My great grandmother, born 1900, always baked eggshells and crushed them, adding them back to the garden as well as to the chicken feed. So, yes, I did know this. But, I wouldn't save them up prior to baking because if they have raw egg on them from cracking that would get pretty grody. Would bake them the same day the next time I use the oven. :)

Hello Tony, not a 100% chance of stopping slugs using blended egg shells, but it certainly helps so no slug pellets are used and used in conjunction with coffee grounds they normally go elsewhere. If the slugs are starved of regular food they won't breed and I have found a massive reduction in slugs activity over the last year or so other than on my boundarys with my plot holders.....lol. Believe it or not, even crumbled up gypsum drywall will prevent blossom end rot, I tried it on a tomato and it worked. I only did it on one plant and it tasted ok but who knows what else was in that drywall. I don't recommend this, but the point is the calcium is important for nightshades, and if you eat a lot of eggs or have poultry, the shells are ideal for this, why waste them. Tony is right, thanks for the vid Bud :)

@@simplifygardening Thanks! I guess I'd better wait until the cold weather comes back before they will have them back in! Anyway, love your channel, and hoping to start getting some good results. When I first put my raised beds in last summer all my eggshells got crushed and dug into them. Now they go into my compost bin.

Perfect Frank. They make compost so much better especially if your making C-Tea

Frank, my wife does something similar, but she only gives them a light crush. So the compost contains lots of little pieces of eggshell, the beds contain lots of little pieces of eggshell... do you grind the shells as Tony suggests?

Another rumour is that the big ol' leopards prefer to dine on smaller slimey species rather than on our plants.... I hope it is true! (If so does anyone no how to farm grand leopards? That said this line of thought could get scary.... )

I usually just crush them with my hand and throw them in the compost bin, but they don't break down very quickly. I'll have to try the oven and blender method.

Good tips, thank you Tony. I put eggshells into a wire tray in the bottom oven and then crush them once a pile has developed (will now powder them!) and add to various compost mixtures. I've never found the wormery too keen on them but probably the pieces too big so will try a powdered version. Not all tomatoes planted up yet so will try that tip as well, good one, thanks. b.

Thanks for the great content. I keep breaking sprayers with egg shell concentrate / banana peel tea as it blocks the sprayer’s tube. Any ideas?
@simplifygardening
@simplifygardening 4 жыл бұрын
Your better off using them as a drench rather than spraying so do that instead or put a piece of cotton on the end of the tube in the sprayer to prevent the shell and skin being pulled up the straw
