Sync lock is essential if you're doing notes on a feature-length timeline. Not worth it to keep the client waiting while you try to recover sync.

Use overwrite and keep the tracks in sync.

Not sure if this is a good idea when working with lengthy (complex) timelines. It would be great if you can further explain the benefits of this system. For example around 1:53 you added filler to your A2 audio track and to no other tracks. But if you would have had more audio clips on A2 further down your timeline they would now all be out of sync with their intended queues. I see the same problem with the way you are using extraction to move segments in your timelines around. Instead of using segment drag (only moving that segment) you basically moved the segment you wanted to move and everything further down that track. Is there something that im not getting? I would love to get liberated from using sync locks as well. But for the meantime it still seems to be a great tool. This was just not convincing. Could be good if you made a longer video with more demonstrations to convert some of us stuck in our ways

This is a great comment. Others have referenced the A2 filler issue and your absolutely right that I didn't go over that well. I need to and I will explain my sync lock workflow in better detail. I am going to put out a Part-2 to Never Use Sync Locks next Wednesday so I hope you catch it and give me your opinion/feedback. Cheers! Happy New Year!

I've never use sync lock 'cause for me, it feels the same. Let me explain : With Sync Lock : You have to disable some to modify few tracks Without Sync Lock : You have to select the few track you want to modify. It feels it's the same logic but in reverse. So for me, no one is better than the other.

Ha! I completely agree with you sync lock off while rough cutting. MUCH Faster. For notes, however, sync lock on for me. I've fucked my self too many times with my sloppy mousing and moving too fast only to not notice I threw everything down the line 2 frames out from a misclick in trim mode trying to roll a cut. Sync lock fucks the whole timeline up so it's crystal clear I fucked up.

I don't understand this technique; especially the part where you use in/outs and then extract to move one bit of a clip, what if you have other elements placed further in the timeline on that same track, it would just make them all drift along while you extract that bit of filler, won't it ? So you gained 30 seconds moving that specific clip, but all of that track is now out of sync... Is there something I'm missing ?

Yes your right it would...in that case I highlight the second VO, copy into source monitor , go back one frame with. cut it in and if I needed better timing...hit ctrl z, go back a frame, edit it in. hit ctrl z, go back another frame, edit it in etc until it lined up right. all using keyboard no mouse drifting across the screen to check which track to unsync. I have a video called copy into source monitor that shows it.

@@avidbeer And that my friend is called REsyncing. Click on synclook and you won't have to spend your time doing that :-)
@avidbeer
@avidbeer 4 жыл бұрын
@@tptp57 Well I also just thought about how in that case I would of probably just grabbed the segment tool and nudged the VO over 1 frame at a time and played it back until I liked it. I guess the difference is I do hit Ctrl A -- Ctrl Shift A -- X number of times a day. Others hit the various Sync lock boxes X number of times a day. What's faster? We need the scientists to get off the virus vaccine and figure that out

@@avidbeer They are just different tools for different uses. In Avid, everything can be solved in at least three different ways. In my opinion, it's one of the best things about Avid. Use the technique that works for you and your workflow. But we should not speak derogatory about other people's methods. :-)

I'm agnostic when it comes to everything edit related but I haven't seen any way locking your tracks together makes editing faster. Training wheels I say until someone shows me different!

@@avidbeer Try cutting in a long timeline with many tracks without using synclook. I've been an editor for 40 years, used Avid for 30 years, taught Avid for 25 years and used all kinds of editing tools for both film and video. Synclook is one of the most important tools an editor can use to avoid losing sight. Most of the timeline is outside the visible part of the screen. Maybe it's a small audiobit an hour further out on the track that you had forgotten. I have spent far too many hours of my life recovering sync. It’s a very useful tool for those who do not want to end the day with 3 hours of REsyncing. Thanks for the entertaining and sometimes helpful tips :-)

@@tptp57 Once you master Ctrl-A Ctrl-Shift A you are basically toggling sync lock on and off at your will and need. I have never spent one minute recovering sync which is the point for newbies to learn to edit without it. I understand someone who has edited with sync locks for years won't be able to switch. I started computer editing on a program called Scitex Sphere that didn't have sync lock. Thanks for commenting. I was hoping it would spark a reaction :)

@@avidbeer Just because someone uses sync locks doesn't mean they are using "training wheels" as you put it - if anything, that comment says more about you than anything else ... I've been editing thirty odd years on various systems - some with sync locks - some without ... and hands down - sync locking is a great tool ... here's where your theory of "mastering" ctrl a / ctrl shift a - falls down ... sometimes you wouldn't want to be locking all the tracks when cutting or inserting etc. - perhaps you only want to alter a few - say at the top or bottom of your timeline (on the vertical) ... and not only that but it works the same way when editing ... i.e. avoid cutting across all tracks except either those either highlighted or synced ... Just because you believe editing is all about speed, beer & training wheels - doesn't mean everyone agrees with you ... sync locking is a tool ... if people choose to use it - can't you just accept that without judging them?

@@Gbone100 Your 1000 percent right Gordon. I made that video a long time ago and it's framed very poorly. The training wheels remark was more an analogy about speed on a bike and how much faster you can ride without being worried you will fall just like how much faster you can edit if your not worried about losing sync on your tracks. I do use sync locks in every edit I do all the time. However I edit in AVID with sync in the opposite way. So some people edit with everything synced and when then want to move a clip on only one track they will move the mouse to the little slash button for that track. (Then they have to turn it back on to keep everything in sync.) I edit with every track un-synced and then and hit the track button I need to move a clip on one track and then when I need everything back in sync I just hit Ctrl-A. It's not a "better" way to edit but it is faster. More time to drink. I made a part 2 to this video that talks about it a little better. Cheers!
