I have tailbone issues and was having to fly cross-country at a medical supply store (not el cheapo Walmart) I purchased a 3" pillow with a U shaped hole. TSA's xray saw hollow channels in it and pulled off to check. I didn't even know those were there because you couldn't see them from the outside of the phone they were tunneled inside the foam. They were unzipping the cover and wiping some sort of little pad across it probably to make sure I didn't have explosives in there. There were three of them looking at over and saying they had never seen one quite like that and wanted to know where I bought it. Ten miles down the road at such and such store. After 5 minutes they gave it back to me and I told him I hadn't expected I was going to be some sort of a training lesson today! They smiled and chuckled. So just be aware of that if you're getting a really firm pillow from a medical supply store!

One time I had a pair of shoes (they were special quasi-orthopedic). Unbeknownst to me at the time, there was some metal inside the sole. The shoes were like a wedge loafer concept...so the metal must have been built in there to provide structure. At any rate, it was a pain to hold up the line and not only did I have to take off the shoes, but I got a special pat-down besides. This incident happened at FRA.
@philipdouglas5911Ай бұрын
Shoe removal is not a requirement outside of the US and in Europe we are not asked routinely to do it. Also security checks are done by staff who are genuinely helpful in getting you through the process. This is a contrast to TSA where rudeness and power trips are common linked to general paranoia regarding anyone who looks slightly different. They would not cope in airports that are major transit hubs in the Middle East where people pass through in many different styles of dress.

I have a titanium hip and each airport is different. In Milan I was scolded for not having documentation of my hip replacement. I carried a paper card 18 years and nobody cared to see it, in Milan after the mile walk through the mall that is their departure terminal, I was scolded. I offered to show her both surgical scars and she made it clear that I would be arrested for indecent exposure. 😮😮 So my worn card is back in my wallet. I expect delays, and even got TSA precheck to help, but we usually get selected for random search.

I'm sorry to hear that :( I've had the same thing happen to me with my implanted device. I've only been asked for my documentation like 3 times in almost 10 years. Also sometimes I have to show the scars (luckily mine aren't considered indecent exposure haha)

Biggest problem with TSA is the lack of training and the fact that most, not all but most people working in TSA lack common sense and/or independent rhought process. I have been asked to remove my wedding ring most of the time, so I always take it off. I also had a belt with a plastic buckle and thr response from the highly trained individual was you have to take off ALL belts. I have been also told multiple times that you cannot carry a portable battery (talking about the 5k and 10k mah batteties that EVERYONE travels with to top off your phone or tablet). The list goes on. I am not opposed to TSA, but the curent standards are mediocre at best and don't really spark confidence.
@ProjectUntetheredАй бұрын
Yeah I totally agree, it seems like sometimes they just make up their own rules. It also says directly on the TSA website that you're allowed to record videos in the security line as long as yo don't hold up the line or record the x-ray screens. And almost every time I try to do it, I get yelled at.
@stephancox9105Ай бұрын
@@ProjectUntethered The TSA's rules also say that even if something is allowed on their "What Can I Bring?" list, the TSO has the ultimate authority to decide what is and isn't allowed on an airplane. The Fed badge really goes to their heads.
@user-dh771Ай бұрын
The reason they ask you take of any kind of belt is because they aren't using metal detectors. They've replaced it with newer body scanners that scan for any irregularities on the body. So essentially anything that isn't part of your body has a likely chance of alarming which is why you take your shoes and as much clothing off (without being indecent of course). Also, not sure why any TSA officer would ask you to take off your ring or any other jewelry for that matter. If anything, doing so is more of a hassle because something so small is more likely to get lost. And they shouldn't be denying you to carry batteries with you as long as they are 100 watt hours or below and are lithium ion. In those cases, ask the officer to talk to their supervisor.

Yeah this sucks, I totally get where you're coming from. I also have to get patted down every time. I would recommend putting all your valuables together in some sort of secure zipper pocket that would be hard to get into. Laptops are the trickiest because they're sitting out in the open. I always try to make sure I push my laptop through the x-ray machine last so it's not sitting out in the open so long, but it's still nerve wracking. Another thing you could do is put an airtag in your laptop case in case someone snatches it. That way you'd be able to track it down in the airport.

I got patted down or my luggage searched every single time until I got TSA pre-check. I tried everything to avoid this, sometimes my luggage would get pulled when it ONLY had clothes in it. What made me finally get pre-check is that a business woman cut me in line so she was synced with my luggage and I was synced with hers. They pulled her luggage and she hit the roof. Was yelling about how she travels basically every day and has for over a decade and has NEVER had her luggage pulled. That the same luggage they were pulling now had been through 4 other security lines already with absolutely no changes. I went and got precheck after that and haven't had a problem since then. I always seem to get inappropriately touched in--er, I mean--a "pat-down" on my stomach or groin every time I go through TSA. I hear secondhand information that this is always caused by anomalies in clothing that show up in the body scanner. I think the stomach pat-down is always to check to see if I'm wearing a belt that I forgot to take off (it could just be the body scanner alarming on the waist string in my shorts or athletic pants) and the "touching of my junk" is because either crotch sweat or some weird crease in my shorts, pants, and/or underwear is making the scanner say "This guy is literally Umar Farouk Abdulmutallub". What's sad about the whole thing is this shows me that the TSA is not there to serve me as protectors of aviation security, but I am to serve them as an obedient citizen sheeple that has to adjust how he wears his clothes or packs his belongings. #AbolishTheTSA

Some international airports don't have body scanners everywhere and their metal detectors are really sensitive, I had the nails in my boots set off the metal detector in Kharkiv.
