I actually really like the theory of the Executioner being behind the reanimation of Spent Kin, and here's why. In our world, zombification as a *punishment* is an established concept in some cultures. The idea is that even beyond death, you can be punished for your crimes. If the Spent are executed Gundead criminals, then there exists a clear and obvious reason why the Executioner would reanimate them: to make them serve, even after death. In my opinion, the Spent are used as a form of defense. Have you ever noticed that Spent don't like to pop up until a Bullet Kin dies? Or that Spent often appear after killing a Hollowpoint or Skullet, two enemies associated with ammomancy and/or reanimation? When an intruder enters the area where Spent are buried (or rather, placed and prepared), and as the intruder kills whatever Kin are present, the ammomantic energy of slain Gundead triggers a chain reaction, freeing the Spent. As more Spent die, more Spent pop up, until all Spent are defeated. My idea probably has flaws, but I think it handily explains why Executioner Kin would reanimate criminals into Spent: to use them as a trap for invaders of the Gungeon.

I would also like to point out, It is mostly fable but there's the whole thing about people with unfinished business coming back, or angry spirits coming back, usually criminals, murderers and the like. If we assume the magic of the gungeon has the ability to bring ghosts back why not the spent as zombies being as it does line up with the unfinished business and angry spirits line. It could just be the magic allowing the hatred to manifest into control over the body, albeit non-intelligent control.

In the game, Casings are the main currency. The reason the old bullet-kin are made of steel/aluminum is because they ran out of materials to make the bullets in the Forge. These adventurers came in and had all currency changed to brass casings due to the Gungeon's magic. After they ran out of materials, the High Dragun decided to take most of these brass casings he got from slain adventurers and dumped them into the forge, thus making the brass bullet-kin we know and love.

I don't think the Skullet and Shroomer actually conflict at all? The top of the skull is clearly part of the slug, which is spent in the Shroomer's case - considering it can be removed and replaced, it's only logical to assume that there's some sort of simple mechanism to both attach and then _remove_ the upper part of the skull from the rest of the skeleton. In addition, considering it, y'know, mushroomed? I don't think it's that much of a reach to assume some of its skeletal structure may also have been destroyed in the explosion.

I am truly sorry this took so long. It's just been such an emotionally stressful time for me recently, and I've been working at it so long I inevitably started to worry if anyone would even like it, the usual worries. But it's here now, and hopefully things start improving. I'm sure my mood and work ethic will improve when the hayfever goes away and I can actually *BREATHE* Also, for some reason every recording I take reacts differently to noise reduction and amplification methods, and I have yet to nail down exactly what error or mistake is making it so difficult to actually make the audio nice and proper. Here's my take on some things First, the different variants of Bullet Kin (Shotgun Kin, Sniper kin, etc.) Thanks to this neat little thing called Epigenetics, where certain genes will only become observant when certain criteria are met, it's entirely possible that normal bullet kin adjusted to using different weapons. Or in the case of the Bullet King, becoming large to accurately use a weaponized chair. Secondly, the anatomy of a bullet might be similar to a human, but with gunpowder replacing most of, if not all, muscles and tissues inside the body. Now when it comes to the head, or rather the slug, it could be a brain housed inside a skull housed inside the lead. I do believe that the soul of a bullet kin and the brain are separate, with the brain only being used for higher cognitive functions, which explains why the Shroomer and Spent can move around still, but not accurately wield weapons, or wield weapons at all, and the explanation for the 'Slugless Cardinal.' Imagine it like a phone, where if you remove the SD card, you can still turn on the phone and do basic functions, but anything like making calls is impossible without the card back in (I don't know that much about phones, could be using the wrong jargon, but whatever.) I also wanted to touch on something that wasn't talked about in the video. Shotgun Kin and Veteran Shotgun Kin have a chance on death to explode. This would make sense if the muscles and tissue were replaced with gunpowder, but that brings up another question, 'why don't all Bullet Kin explode upon death if at least 50% of their body mass is gunpowder?' Maybe, since it only happens like half of the time, it could be that the casing of a shotgun shell is weaker than the casing of a bullet, usually being made of plastic opposed to brass, and the player's bullet passing through the shell and igniting the gunpowder. That's all that I can really think of at the moment, if there is anything that you think of that I missed, leave a reply and I will make edits.

in one of the the keep's painting, you can see a knight somewhat shaped like a kin. my theory is that when the great bullet struck, everyone became "bulletified". then those kins made the forge to build more kins. on a sidenote, i don't see how shroomers break the rules of your theory? as you said, they just aren't allowed complex thoughts, but they still have a mind so they're still alive.

I think that the slugs are not like skulls, above the brain rather than containing one, as slugs are not hollow and wouldn't have room for a brain. This explaining how the bullet can remove their slug. Also we can tell they have skeletons but we cant see inside to be sure where the brain is. This also opens the possibility that skullets have brains because we can't see if they do or not although they are probably rotted away. Also the bullets that are executed (spent) died because the slug continues into the case a bit meaning to fully remove it as we can see has happened they would have to slice a bit lower, also chopping into the brain killing them. They could of also died because they were sliced a bit below. The brain of the shroomer may just be lower in the body (under the black patch we can't see past) and the skull was blown of with the slug, probably not though. Sorry for all the edits

In addition to be used twice, the shotgun kin, bullet kin, and the sniper kin would have lots of cousins like small explosive rounds and incinedary rounds. Take the Shotgrub for example, if you look in the bottom right, it looks like green on the top and yellow on the bottom and the description it says "Green or Yellow?" so yeah, they have lots of cousins and siblings: Young, And Old. So there you have it. (Also, Shotgrub rounds are poisonus.) And yes, the top slug of the shotgrub is green so that would explain the poison effect.

15:25 Ever since I've seen this video on it's release day, i have been thinking about this problem, and i think i have an answer. The reason that bullet kin don't look like a bloody mess and have their skulls visible is because whatever event happened to make them deform and deviate from the usual bullet-shaped bullet kin shape also destroyed their cranium. this event of mass cranial destruction only left their outer, yellow casing (comparable to human skin) and gunpowder (comparable to human blood). you might be thinking "But isn't one of the points in the video that the bullets have some form of blood filled circulatory system?" well, that might not be the case (ing) i purpose the theory that their circulatory system is powered by gunpowder instead, explaining why the bullet king explodes after being defeated. [the reason why bullets would even need lungs is because gunpowder, or any material can't ignite without the presence of air (o2). bullet kin don't explode instantly upon moving their leg-nubs because just like humans with glucose being burnt; it happens in such small separated doses, that is only produces heat and electricity making it so they, just like humans can move.] Now a follow-up question to the last question might be: "but why then don't any other bullet kin explode on death?" Well, they do. think back to that one time in the game you killed a bullet kin. What did it do upon it's death? Fly / fall back a little distance. this is due to them: 1 die due to a lack of gunpowder flowing through it's veins and brain 2 the final blow hitting and igniting that last bunch of gunpowder 3 flying like no other bullet corpse has ever done before (because you know, a body without blood/gunpowder is lighter than one with it) "Well, then why don't they spill gunpowder every time they get hit?" That would be because they do. Take a close look at a bullet getting shot at by the player. They flash, as if something was ignited right in front of them. this results in a lot of heat being released, resulting in the bullet's bullet wound being instantly cauterized/sealed. As for the vampire and blood offering... maybe the vampire likes her blood on the rocks with a little gunpowder mixed in for a little spice? She just calls anything that flows inside anything blood? the designers/script writers didn't think that anyone would look this far into the lore and anatomy of a bullet inside this game where they live in a gun-castle-dungeon filled with guns held by those bullets which shoot bullets maybe aimed at a bullet holding a bullet or shotgun shell OR BOTH which in turn shoot guns that shoot bullets and shoots shotguns which shoot shotgun shells respectively? who knows? one theory i do have is that with any bullet modifier/synergy/gun where the bullets make the enemy bleed the bullets are just filled with either red food dye, fake blood or ketchup, and i'm sticking with the thought that you can shoot ketchup-filled bullets. wow, that went on longer then i thought. thanks for reading all of this. if i made some kind of mistake, please share your counter arguments and solutions to those!

Something very interesting I found while perusing the wiki, don’t know if anyone else has already stated it though. A quote regarding the gummy enemy from the ammonomicon “When the Old King still ruled, ancient Gundead would tightly wrap spent shells in bandages and pull the slug out through their casing. This would preserve the bullet for many years.” This not only suggests that spent shells have their slugs still, but that gummy enemies are spent shells and that removing the slug somehow preserves them.

My theory on The Spent is that when a bullet kin get's shot (unexplained how) their slug gets ejected (since it's how a bullet is meant to be used they actually die from this.) Since they got "Spent" it could be considered a natural death and that moving them from where they fell after use is dishonorable to them and it's the natural order of the gungeon for them to be left where they lie. They then get absorbed into the gungeon and are reanimated by something/someone (or even naturally) when they are needed (assuming that it's not disrespectful to reanimate a bullet kin that died doing what it was meant for.)

I think the Shroomer problem can be explained: It's a spent bullet, and we know how hot bullets get when they're fired (unless i'm completely wrong) so it just immediatelly culterized the wound, and since they were spent, it destroyed the bones that should be poking out.

“The killer kin have minor ammomantic powers” Well, when they die, instead of just exploding into 6 bullets, they leave a bullet chain that automatically aims toward the player despite no one to actually aim it toward you. This proves that they do actually use those powers in play, at least for a little bit. And another thing, ammomantic is obviously a play on words of necromantic, a form of magic involving the dead. This would also explain why the spent are (somewhat) alive and why the power comes into play only as they die.

You are assuming that the anatomy of bullet kin is consistent. Different kinds might be completely different such as sharks (fish) and dolphins (mammals) even though they look similar. Also, for the spent they might have had their slug eaten as their appearance, demeanor, and overall behavior scream of zombies. One might have created through some means and he infected others.

Part of the reason they use brass is because it makes a good gas seal while retaining the ability to return to its regular shape. It's really not about corrosion resistance and more about gss seal. That why some of the first cased ammunition used rubber casings.

I actually bought the Ammonomicon because of your channel, maybe in a future video you should cover the difference in the Resourceful Rat's description between the the physical book and the game. It almost seems like the physical book retcons the game in a way or at least tells a new story (Also nice video!)

The Rat's description in the book is very similar to one of the Rat's descriptions in the in-game Ammonomicon, since he has multiple. You get the first one after beating his first phase, and you get the final one after beating him outright. I'm pretty sure the first one, talking about how glorious and amazing he is was supposed to actually have been written by him, hence why the Physical Ammonomicon has that section in a completely different font, colour, and slant.

Man, i dunno why this game is so amazing. I mean I love it, what im saying is that its incredible how it all comes together. The lore, guns, items, ambience, music, references, jokes, art, polish... I could play this game forever and seeing how it was made, I miss to capture its essence. It is just special, thats as much as I can say, so many things executed to perfection that no other (in my opinion) indie roguelike achieved to its level. Im not undermining other games, all im saying is that for me they dont come close to gungeon. Maybe you could gave me insights of why I feel this way with this particular game. The spent might be revenants and return out of pure rage, I mean looks alone make them look like they are furious, also due to their method of death the process that lets the souls of bullet kin return may not be achievable with their current form. Anger slowly building in their soul which started with their execution, then increased with each passing event which effected their corpse being dumped in the hollow instead of being buried, being forgotten by the other bullet kin due to the missing grave stone and having gungeoniers walk over their place of rest as well as hearing the constant sound of the firefights between said adventures and the local residents. This all builds up until one unlucky gungeonier steps on their grave and they final snap and burst from the ground to take bloody revenge. That or they are just animated by the latent gun magic that is everywhere.

4:25 alright so heres my take on it, i believe the 2 steel/aluminum bullets seen arent the only ones to exist, as there is a chance the bullet kin changed over time in the form of maybe evolution or something because they both come from an older generation. there IS the devolver which doesnt have any steel/aluminum forms, but they also can be aged versions of specific bullet kin. i say specific because theres old red.

I think that the Slug of a bullet allows more advanced thinking, where without, it has it's basic thinking, here's how I think the types of Slugs effect bullets. - Standard Slug: Allows advanced thinking with assault rifles, handguns, and even machine pistols to the point where they can even predict enemy movement. - Sniper Slug: A Standard Bullet has shooting skills similar to a Veteran Bullet and/or a fondness for sniper rifles, this changes the slugs to sniper slugs, then they engage in combat with sniper rifles. - Shotgun Slug: Depending on the color slug, a different shotgun (This is actually proven, Red = Normal Shotgun, Blue = Winchester, Purple (Veteran): Sawed Off). They have grown with a fondness for close range combat and adapted to the shotgun. Okay, with the Shroomer, the bullet's skull was blown out when the slug itself blew out, their V type of shooting is possibly because . Spent are explained with their name why they have no slug, a spent bullet is a bullet without the slug, in real life, this happens when the bullet fired in a firearm, the spent bullet then ejects from the firearm. In ETG, this could happen when the slug is shot enough to the point it explodes causes the bullet to die.

About the growing to fit their weapons thing, the shotgrub (gun) says the older shotgrubs wield the younger ones, meaning the shotgrubs grow into older shotgrubs which all end up the same, likely meaning the other gundead follow the same thing, so when shotgunkin/bulletkin/etc reproduce they grow into the same type of anmo

The Spent are just that- spent. The Lich, aka the Gunslinger has been shown to use bullet kin as ammo. It makes sense that they are all lying about in random areas, if he fought Cannon in the Hallow to protect Bullet Hell, there would be an awful lot of Spent lying around the Hallow after the fight, left there to slowly be buried, and then rising later to seek vengeance for their lost lives.

You could say because the AK shoots bullets, but the Bandana Kin's Machine Pistol also shoots bullets, but its appearance is different. If you said it was because the bandana kind was born to look like the machine pistol it wouldn't make sense because then why isn't the AK-47 bullet kin different when both weapons fire bullets (not shotgun shells or crossbow bolts or anything). The only other option is that the grow into what weapons they like, in fact, it's more simple that bandana kin have that appearance because they can just put on a bandana. Same with Tankers

Shroomers not having the inside-slug skull makes me think it's the same incident that made them that ...shroomed, that also blew away their skulls and whetever part of the brain was housed within. My theory aligns with the outer slug being a sort-of reflection of the part of bullet kin brain inside, responsible for higher brain function, that responds to a changed work environment and, their brain adapting to a new gun, the slug adapts to the brain's change and resemble the gun of choice's. Back to shroomers: they have brain damage. Their higher brain funtion is badly crippled, hence, they can not shoot straight, but they still have a slug and enough brain left in their below-slug parts that they can pick up a gun and shoot, however inaccurately. The Spents, though, can't, and I think I know why they come back: they aren't accepted into afterlife with their slugs completely missing, and thus, the empty casings rise up and go searching for their slugs.

7:25 It's more likely that once a bullet kin dies, there shells are taken and repurposed for later use so younger bullet kin can be born. 15:25 Maybe just like chickens, bullet kin can survive without there head. The reason why the bullet (Aka, Sword dude.) Is able to change brains is because that's what the bodies instinct are, look for another brain so we can think properly. Bullet kin who have blown out brains are unable to replace there heads so they simply resort to simplistic needs and desires, they still have eyes and a mouth, so it's believable they'd find a way to keep living based on instinct.

Steel and aluminum are considered sub-par for ammo because they may not expand properly with the heat of the gas expansion, creating a bad seal at the receiver and reducing accuracy as well as jams in some models of firearm. Positive side of steel casings is that steel is much less expensive than brass so it's still widely used for the sake of weapons practice while I don't think I really saw anyone use aluminum.

The usage of the word dirty when describing steel is pretty accurate. Steel is more likely to bite into things it shouldnt, crack and in general tends to run rougher than brass ammo and is considered cheap or dirty ammo. In general steel and aluminum are just a cheaper alternative to the use of brass in bullet shells but tends to cause issues in firearms

The slug could have a separate bone from the rest of the skeletal system, allowing for more easy removal than expected in the case of the bullet’s shotgun skin and the split shot guy in the oubliette not having a slug bone, we can see the lead from it peeled back so it’s only really the internal of the slug missing.

I believe that bullet kin evolve with their weapon of choice, as no two enemies in the game have the same weapon (excluding different 'forms' of enemies. blue shotgun kin hold a Winchester, red shotgun kin hold a regular shotgun but mutant shotgun kin also hold a regular shotgun, as they're just mutated red shotgun kin)

I have two theories on the spent. 1. The bullet kin could be driven by a powerful emotion that allows them to go beyond the grave. In challenge mode, you can get a challenge that brings back enemies as the ghosts to finish you off. Spent could’ve been bullets attempting to kill their own past for whatever reason, and attempting this could be illegal in the gungeon, which is why they are executed. They are brought back fighting you because you are going to kill your own past, and they want the opportunity. 2. There seem to be a lot of spent. A kin wanting to kill their past can’t be common if my last theory is true, as the only one to attempt it in game is the bullet character. In the pictures of the lich, the round being ejected by his gun is alive. Being fired would also remove the lead and, I’m assuming, the bone, explaining the vast number of spent you can encounter.

The bullet's changing slugs to change their roles are very unique concepts, the basic thought of a bullet would probobly consist of: Shooting, The difference between friends and foe, Finding new slugs (considering the bullet has to first take off his current slug to change to shotgun reskin), Breathing, And survival (though garbage). A spent is obviously a bullet kin without the soul, and a gummy is what i assume to be a very wise (though dead) bullet kin, he has learned the intelligence to summon a powerful and more dangerous spent.

I always figured that they were just trapped in the Oubilette, and the worn down appearance of the chamber is likely a result of those trapped within desperately attempting to leave. Garbage bags, I have no idea why they’re there. We know that the bullet kin in the Oubilette are trapped because of the ammonomicon entries for the mutants stating that they have spent too long in the dank darkness, probably beyond their will. Plus, to even access them, you have to open up a convoluted mechanism that feels like something out of a RE game, AND open up two locks in a grate that are locked from the outside. Now, I can’t discern the original purpose of locking up some Gundead in a prison-like area for seemingly generations, but it could have something to do with the Lead Lord or Old King, or some form of rivalry between the two. Think about it, the last crest of the Old King, needed to enter his personal area of the dungeon, is locked away on a pedestal in an area much like Alcatraz if you replace the island with the fact the floor is barred off from both sides, since the elevator down clearly breaks open a wall as it crashes down. My theory is that the sympathizers with the Old King were locked in the Abbey, and then when that started to fill up, they were locked up in the Oubilette, and remained loyal to their King down there until the Old King was but an echo of a forgotten time, echoing through the locked room of the Oubilette. Those bullet kin in the Oubilette who cannot fight and are typically against the walls are succumbing to an infection, a disease.

I believe there may be two mold, the "Bullet" Mold, which would include the bullet kind, sniper shells, etc, and a shot shell mold, which would be your Blue, Red, and Veteran depending on age and weapon choice.

Maybe the reason some bullets are buried in the Keep is because it's a different society: the second floor *is* called "Gungeon Proper", hinting that the Keep *isn't* part of the gungeon in some way.

Maybe the shroomers are misfired bullets. As we can see in the Lich fight, the Lich can summon minions by shooting a book that we can assume is an ammonicon due to it's reddish color. This could mean that if the magic doing this (Everything is up to magic in the gungeon) fails or stutters, their form could be disfigured. Also in the Bullet's past we hear that the bullet kin can be "fired," as Agunim says "to be FIRED at his will," referencing Cannon. Also the skeleton could be the inner structure of a normal bullet. (I might be making this up but I think that bullets sometimes leave casings behind while the inner contents are shot.

They probably don’t bleed because the shots hitting them don’t penetrate veins. On some items can make them bleed ( nail gun synergy, shuiruken thing where I can’t remember the name, str@fe gun) pierce the casing and cut them to make them bleed.

I think the Shroomer, when they were fired, literally lost the chunk of their skull that has the slug, and their brain with it. Something seems to allow them to live without their organs... that, or the Shroomer was refilled with gunpowder that then hardened.
