This made me happy and sad. I met my future wife in 1987 when I was 18 years old. She had a new 1986 Trans_am burgundy color. I asked if I could drive it and 31 years passed with us. We also owned a beautiful arctic white 1985 Trans Am. I miss it. But my wife had a stroke this Dec and died Jan 3 2019. Id trade all in the world for her again. But I have memories. Trans Ams are part of it. She actually picked out the Mustang we own now and have had 8 years.. Or I guess I own alone now :( Ill never get rid of it.

This video hit home with me .. the ending part of the video i really resonate with. My father bought an 83 Mustang GT back in the 90's. He loved that car with everything he had. He drove it everyday and would put it through its paces. Somewhere along the way he lost track of the car, he sold it to a friend when times were tough and never saw it again. I grew up around Mustang culture and the cars themselves. He would always talk about his Red and black 83 mustang and how he loved it. A couple of years ago with the VIN number in hand i set out to find it, and I succeeded. last year on January 7th i brought it home, the look on his face when he saw it is something ill never forget. He was shocked to see it after all these years, and happy that it had survived. He didn't want it though, and told me that he wanted me to have it and keep it alive. That's what i intend to do! Keep making these videos man!

My first car was a midnight blue, 1987 Firebird that I bought from my friend, Rich Barone in 1996. Right before I bought it, the car had been in a minor fender bender. My friend's Rich's parents were wealthy and a bit snobby. They were embarrassed to have an "ugly old dented Pontiac" parked in front of their McMansion so they bribed their son, offering him two thousand dollars towards a new car if he would be willing to get rid of his beloved 1987 Firebird. My friend knew I was broke and looking to buy my first car, so he offered to sell me his Firebird for just $250!!! I jumped at the deal. I bought the car 3 weeks before I got my Drivers License. Since I couldn't legally drive yet, I needed to have an older friend drive it home for me. My stepdad and I spent many a Saturday afternoon in our driveway fixing up that Firebird with parts from the local auto junkyard. I Absolutely LOVED that car! I drove it almost all the way through college, until it started to have a series of electrical problems. It kept breaking down and I must have changed the alternator at least 5 times before I decided enough was enough. The car had became so unreliable, I decided to trade it in for a very practical Ford Escort Wagon. I'm in my early 40s now, but I have never forgotten that 1987 Firebird that was my first car. My plan is to buy a midnight blue, 1987 Firebird when I retire or whenever I start to go through a midlife crisis! LOL!

I recently was hospitalized with heart failure and had to sell my '91. Having owned a '69 in the '80's, it took a while to appreciate the gen III bird. I too was unsure about the nose until I found out that the '91 - '92 was the FIRST stock chassis car to break the 300 MPH barrier at Bonneville. The nose was designed, not only to ease the transition to the Gen Iv Bird, but also to house the fuel cell so gas could flow rearward to the twin turbo engine at that insane speed! I regret letting her go, but , like your dad, I enjoyed driving her to work , school and elsewhere for 10 years. Thanks for sharing, I look forward to watching more of YOUR story as it unfolds.

I grew up with the third gen firebird that was originally owned by my grandpa. Then it moved to my dad. Then it moved to me last year. From my Grandpa to my dad to me. What a connection I have, and I will never get rid of it because of how precious it is to me. I remember riding it with my dad and grandpa as a kid going like "woah" or "wow" because how fast it was. I may have a bigger vision as to what I want to do to make it better, but my goal is to get it running first. The engine is trashed because of a thrown rod, but I can get a better engine to get it running. To me, it will always be the firebird that I rode in, enjoying every single minute riding in that car. The greatest gifts I see in life are objects that signify a precious memory or bond with that connection. My dad's first few cars were Pontiacs, but the firebird is my second car. The first maybe a Ford, but the firebird will be something irreplaceable to me. After the story you told about your father buying a recaro edition trans am, you reminded me of a simple truth, and I thank you for that. Now, I may save a lot to get everything I need to get it back to life, and it may take time, but all that doesn't matter when you know that goal is attainable or reachable. I'm excited to work on it and bring it back from the grave. I can't wait to see what you do to make your third gen firebird better! Cheers!

Wow. I totally relate to you. The Firebird in my profile pics is identical to yours in almost every way with exception to the colors. 1991 Firebird. 305v8 and auto trans. 2:73 rear and T-tops. Mine is black with grey interior. However when I listened to your connection between the car and your Dad, I had to reply. My Firebird was ordered and originally purchased by my Mom brand new from Meadows Motors Pontiac in Manchester Georgia. She ultimately died in 1995 from terminal brain cancer. It was her daily driver to downtown Atlanta and back, every day. After her passing my Dad kept the car for a couple years and then sold it to my (at the time) girlfriend. We married and kept the car a few years and then sold it to some friends of ours because we needed to start saving money. Roughly 10 yrs later, our friends offered to sell the car back to us because it was not needed in their household any longer. We managed to scrape up the funds to purchase it back for the same amount we sold it for. It needed work, just like yours. The engine was replaced at some point with another 305 but it now had a blown head gasket and the valves were stuck. I purchased some Trick Flow 23 aluminum heads for it and got it running again. Since then I swapped it to a carb from the TBI and it has been in my hands since. The 700R4 slips and the rubber seals for the t-tops and doors are shot. All of these are a work in progress for me. Bottom line, the car still needs work but is in great shape compared to most third-gen cars. I commend you for snatching up such a great Firebird. I will be following your progress on the car and if I can help in any way, shoot me a message. Ive done quite a few jobs on mine including fuel pump, power window regulators, the aforementioned heads and carb/intake swap. Good luck with it!

I own a 1992 firebird. It’s only a 3.1 V6 BUT I love this car & it’s my favorite body style of the firebird ever! The only thing I want more than mine is the T-top version. It’s an extremely reliable car & a great daily driver. Plus people are always asking about it staring at it & giving me compliments on it!
@crispcars16486 жыл бұрын
I’ve read that it should get about 18mpg city but it being old & needing a tuneup I imagine it’s a little less now. But it does great if I’m not hotrodding it around.
@crispcars16486 жыл бұрын
Derick Smith I do not know what my average mpg actually is. But my I have a 91 mustang GT & a 1995 V10 Dodge Ram & I’ll tell you the firebird gets better mpgs for sure lol. & it is very fun to drive around town you’ll always catch people staring at it at stop lights, the story of how I got mine is much like the guy in this video. I just paid 500$ for mine compared to the his 100$ lol. When I moved into my first apartment I saw it sitting on the side of the road outside the complex & it caught my eye from the second I saw it. I kept my eye on it for about 3months to try & figure out who owned it but it never moved. So one day my neighbors started talking to me & I asked if they knew who’s car it was & sure enough it was theirs. They told me it was it was a v8 but they weren’t 100% sure & that it had been parked for almost 2 years. I asked how much they wanted for it & they said 500$ so I jumped on it. We walked over to it turned it on. It started first try after sitting for nearly two years & it passed smog first try also I gave the 500$ for it on feb 18th 2018 & I daily drive it now
@crispcars16486 жыл бұрын
Derick Smith it’s because most muscle car guys only consider cars from 75 & older as classic muscle cars. At least that’s how it goes in California. & some of the older guys go as far as calling my car ugly. Personally I think this is the best era of firebird mine has this same aero kit as the car in this video. But mine is green & doesn’t have a T-top. I’d definitely recommend buying one if you can find a clean car for a decent price. Most of the ones I see for sale are $1200-3000 for beat down rusted out cars that barely run.

@Derick Smith Well, you could just change the rear differential gears to a more fuel efficient gear ratio. You will need to get the correct gear for the speedometer as well so that the mileage and speed are correct.

The end of this video was so moving to me because i can fall back on some of the things you were saying, my dad had a 91 camaro rs chevy blue with some beautiful chrome torque thrust wheels. The car was is his everything and defined who he was, his love for cars and especially camaros shed off onto me and they have a deep place in my heart right next to him, when he passed away in 09 i was 8 years old and on the day of the funeral we could get his camaro to start and it seemed as if he took the car to heaven with him and its just been sitting for 10 years now with nothin goin on with it. As the past year has came around and i got my license at 17 i had enough money to buy a 4th 01 camaro that only has 29k miles on it and i jumped right to it, i drove the car for the first few months until winter and now i have big plans for it, and im goin to be using the wheels and steering wheel from my dads car bc i feel like thats what hed love to see from his son. I love my car eith my life and it just brings back all the love and pain i get when i think of my father. RIP Jayson Ryan Sack 4/25/2009

Not usually one to comment, but I just had to since the third-gen Firebird is one of my all-time favorite cars. Not gonna lie, as soon as I saw those iconic third-gen tail-lights peeking out from your garage, I was pretty excited to see what you had planned for it. Needless to say, once I saw that this video had been posted, I immediately clicked on it, and was super happy to hear that this car is going to get fixed up and put back on the road. Similarly to you, my dad also owned a third-gen Firebird: a Bright Red 1989 Formula, with the rare 305/5 speed manual combo, and he thoroughly enjoyed driving it. To this day, he still tells me stories about how it would out-handle his buddy's 5.0 Mustang when they would go for drives together. Unfortunately, he sold the car only a year or so after I was born, in preparation for the move from Texas to Canada back in late 2002. As such, I was not able to have any memories with the car, but I still loved the idea of it nonetheless. Now that I'm 17, I was curious about trying to find out where the car had wound up and if it was still on the road; so I had used the little information that my dad had about it, decoded the VIN myself (the one that his old insurance doc had was wrong) and ran a CarFax report to see what I could find. So far, all I know in terms of current information is that the last time it was registered at a DMV, was back in 2014 in Conroe, TX. Although I have hit a dead-end, (that is, that only law-enforcement and private investigators can use a title number to get the owner's name and phone number,) my ultimate goal is to see if the current owner would be interested in selling it back to my dad, so we could bring it up to Alberta, Canada and re-unite it with him, so we can make new memories with it and fix it up as a project. Anyway, although the goal is a bit far-fetched, I think it is worth pursuing nonetheless so that at least I may be able to hear the journey it has been on after my dad sold it. Great work with the videos, here's to more Firebird content!

@@sergeantspeed5941 I got the T5 for free, and it's a World Class model that's been rebuilt. Also new clutch. So hopefully it won't go boom boom immediately.
@sergeantspeed59416 жыл бұрын
@@evanhooper1 I also have the WC model. Unfortunately, rebuilds are not any better, the issue is the aluminum casing around the input shaft weakens, allowing play between the input and counter shafts. With the bearing out of round typically, means they also love to leak fluid, making the t5 live usually an even shorter life. My 92 has a cammed 350. The t5 is still alive after 3 years of occasional use, but there's definitely noticeable play in the input shaft. Since it was free and rebuilt, I'd sell it. You could fetch a decent chunk especially if it was from a v8 model since they're getting harder to find, and save up for the t56 and do the swap 1 time. Unless you plan on babying yours, they're fine typically at stock power and when you don't powershift or burnout all the time.
@evanhooper16 жыл бұрын
@@sergeantspeed5941 Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I already have the engine and transmission in the car and it's almost ready. If it blows, I'll definitely invest in a T56. But as a college student, the T5 was the lucky option being free. (I would have kept it automatic if I didn't get it for free). Luckily my motor is pretty mild (roughly 300-310 crank hp), so I hope it'll last if I granny shift it at like 5500 rpm when playing around.

Amazing story on your love for the Pontiac Firebird buddy. I grew up the same way as my Dad did own a black and gold 1982 Trans Am in the early 90's but sold it long before I was born. My love started when I was five years old when my parents showed me Smokey and the Bandit for the first time and I knew that one day I was going to get black and gold Bandit Trans Am. My Dad bought a 1980 grey Trans Am a few years ago and we love it. I am fortunately proud to say that I am now the owner of a 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Y84 Special Edition Bandit. My car is 1 of 1,107 made in 79 as it is a 400 4-speed car and I am the 2nd owner as it was bought new by my Grandparents' neighbor in January, 1979. Sadly she passed away and her son offered me the car and everything for it including the #'s matching Pontiac 400 V8, all at a price I couldn't refuse. Mine is a project and your videos will definitely help me make good progress. I really love your 78 Firebird and adore your 91 Firebird. The third time put some better oil in there and a better filter. Change your pvc valve because their cheap and easy to do and often overlooked. Change that little hose going from the pvc valve to the throttle body too if it’s worn. Should quiet that thing down under the hood significantly
