The Heritage range is still the yardstick for natural sounding midrange, I own a pair of Tannoy Westminster’s they are just unbelievable. Certain music played through them, can bring tears to your eyes with true emotion.

In my experience the Original Cheviot is one of the best balanced and nicest sounding Tannoy models. The 12 inch driver in this cab sounds way better than the much revered 15 inch golds that i owned previously. The Cheviot sounds way better than the larger 15 inch Berkeley of the period too. Many people brought up on "modern" speakers would be quite shocked at how far speaker design has gone backwards in the last 30 yrs. Comments about this brand or that are meaningless unless you have heard them all. I have and I now only use Tannoy Cheviot and Harbeth HLP3es you can just listen all day, no fatigue and fabulous sound. The new Cheviot has got to be a great buy that will last you a lifetime, no urge to change or upgrade itus once heard!

I grew up on the 12" Tannoy's with Quad Amps and Akai Reel to Reel, it used to shake the windows and walls, but wow did it sound good, I still remember it as a kid listening to to music for hours on end. Then Dad sold those speakers and bought the 15" Tannoys and I'm sure people could hear our music in another suburb as the whole family liked it loud. As an adult I tried to get a similar system as I missed Dad's stereo and speakers so much, I got a pair of Tannoy D700's they have the twin 8" speakers matched with the QUAD 707 pre-amp and Quad 777 Amp with a NAD DAC. It does sound good and you can hear a lot of detail, but it just does not fill the room with rich warm tones like Dad's 12" and 15" Tannoy's and certainly doesn't shake the windows, I have even tried adding sub woofers which helps but is still not the same. I am looking at selling my D700 speakers and want to buy either the Arden 15", Eaton 12", SGM 15" or the SGM 12", what would you recommend having heard many of the Tannoy models over your life? I do remember Dad always saying he preferred the 12" Tannoy's over the 15" as he thought the base was cleaner on the 12". I guess it comes down to the Eaton or the SGM 12" models but would be good to get your thoughts on this choice?

You have SUCH lovely equipment to drive all of these speakers with! The Cheviots are kind of my dream end-of-the-line speakers. Still looking for a nice pair. They have gone through the roof here in Canada and I wish I'd bought a pair back when hardly anyone took notice of them. I like the heritage Tannoy because while they are smooth and warm and some will say laid back, they are still very involving. Some British heritage speakers seem to never pull you in. Tannoy doesn't have that sterile quality at all. Just beautiful.

They sound very clean with good tonal separation, accurate speed, and a nice warmth thats not claustrophobic. And I hasten to add its a nice change to hear music that isn't some kind of obscure breathy vocal, with over amplified strings, and plucky timbres to "bring out" the speaker. Very nice and well demonstrated. Well done.

My $500 Gold 5s I bought for a computer are crisper and clearer than my Focals I paid a grand for 14 years ago. I have them up in the air away from reflective surfaces, and when sitting at the desk my head and the speakers make a equilateral triangle about 36 inches per side. I really like the high end of my JBLs in the bedroom, but the Tannoys highs are sweeter.

I worked in audio hifi retail back in the mid 1975's these speakers had just been released they were awesome just stunning it was either Tannoy Cheviots or JBL Century L100 both fantastic speakers , but god could the cheviots sing worth every £££££££ money well spent i sold many pairs, you could get them with a vivid blue cloth front cover wow stunning, powerful strong punchy bass, clear crisp forward but not harsh or brash midrange and top end, they really showed what a record had. I think if you can't aford $6,500, you can't aford $4,000 either. Tannoy is high-end, made in UK product. Leave it as such. It's not for everyone. Get some Chinese made Klipsh. You could probably swing that if you saved enough.

@@tlr-nut7275 It's not about affordability. The Tannoy Ardens are also pricey but I would feel better about paying $8,000 for them than paying $6,500 for the Cheviot. So I'm seriously thinking about going that route. By the way Tannoy is owned by the Chinese so manufacturing them in China is no big deal. Also my wife and I lived in Scotland for four years early in my Navy career. I was stationed onboard the USS Hunley at the Submarine Refit Site One in Holy Loch, Scotland (the site is no longer there). We lived in the town of Dunoon but toured throughout the UK.
