New 2023 Volvo XC40 B3 Core

This is my brand new car, new model just released. It’s the Volvo XC40 B3 Core. In Thunder Grey metallic colour. Automatic transmission, 2 litre petrol engine, 163ps (around 160bhp). Mild hybrid.

I am on my second XC-40 having bought a 2L diesel as new and then was offered a deal 2 years ago to replace with a brand new 2L petrol. The driving position I have ever had quite easily and the overall level of comfort is very good. I don’t do the miles as such so consumption isn’t good but that is down to me and nothing else! I like the car very much indeed and it has a safe feeling to it as well as being an all-wheel drive. Nice car and I think I made a good choice looking forward.

this is the best video so far from a real user experience for XC40 thanks for sharing you're insights. I also want to get the Core but since it doesn't have front parking sensors so I'm going for the Plus trim, is there a way to add the front parking sensors with a Core trim ? Thanks !!!

I don’t have the front sensors. There’s always an option to add them at manufacture, as long as you’re buying new. To be honest, I really don’t need them. The rear sensors are “hit and miss”, so I don’t rely on them.

It’s a very nice car. My only negatives would be that, being an auto, it’s quite laggy pulling off. You need to allow extra time for pulling out, as it takes a while to engage and go. Also, lots of buggy electronics, I had the PAS issue previously, that was rectified with a software update. There are lots of other things though, sometimes the radio just won’t work or the media player, sometimes it says your Bluetooth isn’t connected when it is, it often refuses to use the Google system or call people, but if done through the phone it works. I’ve also had issues a few times with making calls, I can hear the other person fine, but they cannot hear me. These are occasional issues, but they are annoying. I’m having my first service next month, hoping there’s an update which will solve the issues.

No, can’t find any seat that fits, as the headrest is fixed. I can’t find a car seat that has the headrest part cut out. I guess it wouldn’t be a safe design. Only option is to put it in the front, far from ideal.

Thanks for the video - have had my B3 for a week now. Love it. But have a question - one of the reasons I love driving it is the loose steering. However, it randomly increased steering wheel resistance (more than normal, even at lower speeds). Just wondered if you experienced the same?

I assume you mean light steering. Which model of B3 do you have? I’ve never noticed this driving mine. The only issue I had was when the power steering kept failing. It was so bad though, it was undrivable and you were completely unable to steer. That’s sorted out since I had a software update.

I bought Supaguard on ebay. There’s loads on there, much cheaper than the dealer applying it and doesn’t affect the resale value. Dashcam is a DIY job.

I used to own a VW Tiguan. The Volvo is very nice. I can’t compare like for like as I had the R-line top spec Tiguan. I loved the Tiguan, but I love this cat too.

No extra for the electric boot. The only extra I paid for was the spare wheel.

There aren’t cameras on this model. There are rear parking sensors only.

That’s right. It’s not on this one. You have to press the button o the keys to unlock, or use the app.

With the new ones it’s all Google. There is Apple Car Play. I find the Google system a little clunky, but it’s ok.

Hi John. I do a mix of town & motorway driving. The mpg is around 30-40 as a rule. Not the best, but it’s a 2L petrol engine.

Yes, I’ve got the app and it’s working. You need the VIN number and to pair it with the car. The app only locks/unlocks and will remote start the car. Nothing else on it.

No front parking sensors on this model, only rear ones. There’s standard interior lighting, comes on when you open the door. No ambient lighting, which I admit I do miss.

@@kbm1956I’ve found Volvo website to be really good for trim comparisons as if you click view on the plus trim for example it will highlight any features which it has extra over core. Also trims keep changing, for MY24 core now has heated seats

As it’s 2L and a large car, it’s not brilliant consumption wise. It’s ok. I think I average around 30mpg. I have lots of motorway driving to and from work, then town/city driving in between my mileage is still low, so the fuel economy will improve as the engine beds in more.

Just looking at theses for my next car… regarding the car seat I’ve done some digging… as we also have a child who needs to be in a car seat I’ve heard the headrests fold over at the back by using a headrest fold button on your centre console or onboard screen options? Don’t suppose you have found it since doing this video?

I’ve not found that! That would be great. I’ll definitely have a look. I have asked the Volvo dealership and they had no idea about the car seats. They didn’t mention that the headrests fold. I’ll let you know.

Can you pre warm the car interior from the Volvo app before you get in?

Yes, it has a 10 or 15 min timer. You basically start the engine remotely, from the app. It works really well. Previously, I had a BMW, with that you could only circulate the air and not start the car.

No, the headrest cannot be adjusted. It’s definitely a big problem, as no car seats seem to fit.

I bought new one xc 40 b3 mild hybrid 2 months ago. Straight away I have issues with kers system. Service changed few components due to noise while braking. Now latest they ordered ISGM Module. Not to mention their customer service isnt the best either. Bad experience so far. Will be my last volvo for sure.

I’ve had a few issues, they’re all electronic though. I took it to the dealer, they updated the software and I’ve had no issues since. Niggles are annoying, but from my experience I’d still buy another Volvo.

I’m not sure. I don’t think you can have 2 at the same time, as you would not be able to sync 2 lots of contacts/details. You can have more than 1 phone that connects, but not at the same time.
