The trailblazing Nissan Leaf is about to transform from a family hatchback into a sleek SUV, and we've got the inside scoop! Thanks to recent teasers and insights from Nissan’s design team, we can reveal what the all-new Leaf will look like.
Nissan’s CEO, Makoto Uchida, confirmed that the next-generation Leaf will be based on the Chill-Out concept unveiled in 2021. Matthew Weaver, Nissan’s Vice President of Design for Europe, explained that while there are some changes from the concept to the production model, the new Leaf will remain true to its innovative design. Expect a smooth, coupe-style roofline, a near-vertical tailgate, and the raised ride height typical of crossover SUVs.
In a recent promotional video, Nissan hinted at a few design tweaks, including a more pointed nose and a distinctive headlight signature. Signature Nissan features like the boomerang-shaped lights and a black V-motion grille will make an appearance, but the new Leaf will have a unique look within Nissan’s lineup. Weaver emphasized Nissan's commitment to creating individual designs, noting how the Juke and Qashqai pioneered their segments. The new Leaf aims to break into a new area, showcasing Nissan’s inventive spirit.
Built on the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s AmpR Medium platform, the new Leaf will share its underpinnings with the Nissan Ariya and Renault Megane E-Tech. This platform is designed to maximize the benefits of an all-electric powertrain, likely resulting in impressive efficiency and range. Inside, the Leaf will offer generous space and feature Nissan’s latest infotainment system, based on Google’s Android Automotive OS.
The new Leaf will be manufactured in the UK at Nissan’s Sunderland plant, with significant investment planned for the facility. The plant’s strong history in producing electric vehicles was a key factor in securing production of the new model.
While Nissan hasn’t confirmed the exact reveal date for the next-generation Leaf, it’s expected to go into production in early 2025. Alongside the Leaf, Nissan will launch two other new electric models by 2026: the next-generation Juke and a new entry-level supermini based on the Renault 5.
