honestly the rendering and OOF areas are really nice. Not mad at all

Yes, I actually was also positively surprised about the rendering and the lens in general!

Hi Tom, interesting video. At 1st, about that huge (really!) size i thought - even it's 7Artisans #1 AF lens, it should've been F1.4 at least. 🙂 I must admit, i am very curious, what Viltrox would bring on the table, with a upcoming 35/1.4 AF lens (E & Z-Mount, according to rumors...and especially how big this would be... )

Thanks for your comment! Yes, competition is getting fierce, all these third party manufacturers are coming out with AF lenses by now. And also yes, Viltrox has already created some impressive lenses. I guess there's still a market also for the other manufactures like 7Artisans. In the end, it all comes down to the prices ... if Viltrox gets more ambitious (and more expensive), then the others can target the market segment below them ...

Thx for the review. Dumb question, using a full frame camera, can you crop in a 50mm to get a 75mm look? I like 50mm, but sometimes I seek the extra lens compression that 75mm gives to make the background appear bigger.
@tomscameras3 ай бұрын
It depends on the camera model of course, but most full-frame cameras that I know have a function somewhere where you can set it to "APS-C" crop. So the image on the monitor and in the electronic viewfinder will adjust to that, and the files of course are automatically cropped as well. Note that your resolution (in megapixels) is much smaller then - by a factor of 2.25.

Hi Tom, Meike 50 mm 1.8 or 7Artisan 50 mm 1.8? plz

Hello. Can you reverse this lens and with the use of an adapter ring, use it as a macro lens?
@tomscameras7 ай бұрын
I don’t think this is feasible. You’d need an electronic adapter ring cause the lens needs the electronic communications to adjust the aperture. I would not bother trying this. Use a dedicated macro lens, even if it is an old manual one. That’s much more practical.

Hey Tom, anything new for canon Ef- M Mount?
@tomscameras9 ай бұрын
Hi Jose, unfortunately development of EOS-M has been discontinued by Canon. So it is very unlikely that any third-party manufacturers will develop any new AF lenses for EOS-M in the future. The 7Artisans 50/1.8 AF definitely is only interesting for full frame anyway. So, if at all, the only other interesting mounts would be L, Z or RF. But so far there's only Sony FE mount available.

Sorry 2 say, EF-M is dead, it was clear many moons ago....only 3rd party (Sigma, etc.) kept it going for a while. EF-M was always being the unloved foster child from Canon, compared to EF-S.

How can you update this lens? I cant find the downloads.
@tomscameras5 ай бұрын
This is the official page from 7Artisans with all product information: 7artisans.store/products/50mm-f1-8-af-lens I don’t think there have been any firmware updates yet as the lens is still very new and the firmware should be up-to-date still? Have you run into any issues that are related to software / firmware?

I am a Nikon Z-mount user. I already ordered this lens online before I got to watch your review. Particularly, about that poor AF/MF Slider Switch. I'm sad to report that the problem is still not fixed with the unit I received today, July 2024. It appears, it's not a pre-production issue as you've suspected it to be. 7artisans did NOT fix your observation with this lens . And the no detent thingy with the "A" setting in the aperture ring wasn't fixed, either. I wish I'd gone with the Meike 50mm f1.8, instead at a lower $30 price difference than this 7artisans'.

I did go with the meike,, id prefer the gasket on the meike instead of the aperture ring and short lens.
