That's one aspect I love about solo sessions outdoors. You really got the time and peace to enjoy nature and spin around some deep thoughts. I have had some great epiphanies during tries on my respective outdoor boulder projects. This was an awesome video to showcase this side of climbing. It reminded me of my session last weekend.

So many interesting thoughts. Thanks for the great video! On the weekend I went bouldering outside for the first time. I showed some photos of that trip to my little brother (he is 4 years old) and was a little proud of myself. He then looked at me and asked me why I would climb up that rock. I looked at him and said "Because it's fun!" He then asked me what I do when I have reached the top, do I just climb down again? I said "Yes.". He couldn't really believe it and that was when I thought that it is somehow special, beautiful and maybe also strange to some people, how such a sport could bring you this much joy and happiness.

Hey Mani, I really want to let you know, that this video (in my opinion) got another very interesting aspect to your channel - philosophy. I think, that everyone who is able to should find a sport/hobby/activity where they can do something pointless they enjoy. In the end, life is pointless, unless you set yourself goals - no matter what it is. From my perspective nature is a very rich source of inspiration, motivation and a big playground for all of us. Climbing is such a logical and pure way of interacting with nature, being outside, letting your thoughts go and being free. It is very satisfying and motivational to see that so many of us seem to share this inner passions of climbing, no matter what grade or type of climbing. Thank you really much for making this video. Keep going, I wish you many more nice hours on the rock.

Mani thank you for this video. I know I will never be a pro, nor will I be able to strive for any sort of perfection, but I’m so grateful for the little climbing that I do that has opened my eyes to the beauty and majesty of these boulders. I’m happy to say that I would not just walk past them. I would stand in awe and appreciate every crack and even carefully examine the chalk marks and maybe even try to imagine what the movement might look like. I may even go up to it and touch it or try a move on it, then laugh as it kicks me off.

I think that humans striving for perfection is like chasing a carrot on a stick. Not meaning a pursuit without reward, but more that the goal of perfection is never finite and always subjective to the individuals definitions. Everyone has the potential to achieve their own perfection.

i recruited some friends to start bouldering and convinced them to come to fontainebleau with me this summer. and finding such a down to earth, calculated, non biased dude like you and seeing the insane quality of content, just boosted my motivation through the roof. i'll be so damn trained like never before on my 12 times there and your videos are gonna help me prepare. also loving how you teach appreciation, calculated thought and ways to see things differently. you are a gem and a big inspiration :) love from munich

i got a cold currently because of what ever reasons since it was so warm lately i don't really get it. besides in the morning, i don't feel too bad, so i can probably at least train my fingers a bit. when getting better, when can i get back to training? should i wait for all the symptoms to fade completly? i know everyones different, i just want to collect some tipps, because i get sick like 3-4 times a year wich is too often for my liking. i know its a mental thing too.

I think there would be a difference between animals. A boar might not realize what you are doing, or it might think you are crazy, but a chimpanzee, or a corvid might be smart enough to understand that you do it because it is fun. They might even do similar stuff (corvids do activities solely to have fun, don't know about chimpanzees). The line between animal and human intelligence has always interested me, these sorts of thoughts would be fun to investigate; would a boar, or a chimpanzee, or a corvid, mimic you, or try and see what you are doing, or where you are going?

These reflexive thoughts remind me of a passage from the ancient Chinese book,The Classic of Tea (760 AD): "In man, there is supreme perfection. It is only for ease and comfort that man works at things.He sequesters himself in a house. So the house he refines to the perfection of his own taste. He covers himself with clothing. The clothing he refines to perfection. He consumes to satiety both food and drink. These he also cultivates and refines to the utmost."

Love your imagined scenario with the boar haha :D Yes we are weird, us humans... Nice to realise that we've mastered survival to such a degree where we can actually invest so much of our energy into such "pointless" stuff... Makes me really greateful :-)
@fishmate54436 жыл бұрын
Interesting thoughts, many of which I share. For example, the use of the word 'fun', included in every statement regarding a route or problem. We wouldn't do it if it wasn't fun! You never hear someone say, "I hate climbing, but they have taken my family and wont return them until I climb f8b!". :) nicely shot and presented and also thought out. It must be hard to create slightly different content given the saturation in our small world.

Hey Mani. I always liked your channel and today I have begun to like it even more!! Love this quiet video of you making these moves and your little reflection on climbing. Many climbing videos often focus so much on the physical aspect and forget to emphasise the spiritual/mental and emotional aspects of this crazy, all-consuming discipline (I dont see climbing as a sport). I wonder if you've read Arno Ilgner's The Rock Warrior's Way. Its a great book on climbing which is heavily influenced by Japanese Zen practises, Buddhism and western psychology. Its definitely a book you will love. Keep finding your meaning in the tiny cracks and and minute detail of the rock because somewhere in those crack is where all of life's meaning and purpose is.

interesting thoughts but i wouldn’t call it useless perfectionism because basically everything we do which isn’t existencial for living can than be considered as useless. since live has no greater meaning unless the individual gives it some.

But would the ancient human ancestors also not have thought just like the boar, until the period in time came when food became more secure and energy could be directed to other outlets, like crafting, art, music, and eventually movement, sport, physical training?
@monkeybrain806 жыл бұрын
I wonder if some animals do have the same sort of drive for pointless perfection as human have... for instance a raven practicing inverted flight, a dolphin blowing air rings, or starling with it's constant mimicry of other birds calls. Obviously in a lot of cases animals strive for perfection in order to gain a mate or survive -- same reason some climbers climb :) -- but these animal examples may represent situations where animals practice a potentially useless activity.... maybe for "fun", or maybe just because they can. :)

that's why rock climbing is not a sport for me - it's a lifestyle (one of many). It gives purposes and goal in this non-purpose universe. Because without purpose there is only misery and depression.
