Hitachi Rail and Alstom will build HS2's first fleet of trains under a £1.97bn deal that includes a 12-year maintenance contract.
They will build 54 high speed trains in the North and the Midlands, which they say will create over 2,500 jobs.
The fully electric fleet will be the fastest trains in Europe, capable of a maximum speed of 225mph.
The trains will consist of eight cars and measure 200 metres long. They will run between London and Birmingham for Phase 1 of the HS2 project.
They aim to increase capacity and connectivity between towns and cities including Stoke, Crewe, Manchester, Liverpool, Carlisle, Motherwell and Glasgow.
