I thought it was noteworthy that Frank tells HAL to raise the table even as his parents' happy-birthday video plays; he isn't interested in what they're saying. He continues to watch expressionlessly. I mentioned this to Gary Lockwood when I had occasion to meet him a few years ago. He said he tried to play Frank as having a little bit of an attitude. But I always thought the way that seemingly throw-off scene actually did much to show the dispassion and remoteness that a long-duration space traveler might settle into.

Beautiful work! The circuit board diagrams are an excellent catch, massive props for seeing that. I've got a whole bunch of critique on the BBC intro though... The BBC title screen graphic doesn't look quite accurate to me, it's somewhat difficult to fit into the 16x9 aspect ratio as you've done however I suggest keeping the graphic at its original aspect ratio and adding onto the sides instead of squishing the elements. I've perspective corrected the tablet from the original movie while keeping the vertical height as accurate as possible (still eyeballing it in all fairness) and applied it as a difference overlay to your isometric cube background, note the blue lines extending past the second row of rectangles-I believe the height of the perspective corrected rectangle to be accurate and that the ones in your version should be taller. If you REALLY want to go for accuracy find the size of the 2001 tablet, calculate the aspect ratio, ensure your perspective warped version shares the same ratio, match your graphics to it, and extend the sides to match 16x9! I've done this for your reference to showcase the height discrepancy: imgur.com/a/dsEnDKi This will shrink the overall size of the graphic a bit and you can probably still crop a bunch off the bottom of the shot so that it's not ridiculously small while maintaining as much accuracy as possible without actually using the vertical aspect ratio. I think it should look quite nice! The BBC typeface also does not look correct to me, according to Typeset in the future is set in Univers but the counters of the B in the font you've chosen look quite different from how it is displayed in the original film though again, it's hard to say given the quality. The "12" doesn't look like the right font either but I'm almost certain it ISN'T set in Univers in 2001. My final point is on the colour, I believe the tablet was done with rear projection through the table and as such its blacks are limited by both the environment light and the contrast ratio the projector is capable of. You seem to have colour matched to the film and its lighting conditions (except for the white text which you seem to have corrected for properly!) while in reality the actual colour of the graphics if they were displayed on a modern screen would be much different! I've also provided a colour corrected image (second image in the imgur link above) beside the original pulled from the film, both have obviously been perspective corrected. I think the reds and text have been corrected for properly, you may consider lightening and de-saturating the pink bits more than I have. That's all! I love your work and as a huge fan of the retro-futuristic aesthetic of 2001 I can say with a large degree of certainty that you've done a faithful job capturing the aesthetic. Hopefully this has been helpful!
@TheHALProject3 жыл бұрын
WOW. Thank you so much for your fantastic, detailed feedback! Let me try to hit on all the points you've raised. BBC Graphic, you're right on the aspect ratio, and I have fixed this, I still have cropped in a little bit as you say to reduce over repetition of the background and making the BBC logo too small but I think your suggestions were excellent thank you! Now when I go back and look at the original it looks completely wrong, it's funny what a fresh pair of eyes can do. Also BBC typeface is fixed, it weirdly hadn't occurred to me that they'd be using the correct BBC logo, so this is now fixed! Also fixed the "12" typeface, it needed just a minor tweak. On the background colours, I've taken on board your idea and tweaked it a little, its much more vibrant and looks much better, its not quite the same as your provided screenshot but its a good mixture between the two versions. Thank you so much again for this - it is hugely appreciated :)
@HankW3 жыл бұрын
@@TheHALProject Rad! Glad I could be of some help! Manually adjusting the background is absolutely the way to go, my colour corrections were very approximated and there's only so much you can do with the original version given that I was working off of compressed sources. The black and white levels should be reasonably accurate though in that they are actually supposed to be black and white. Looking forward to the new iteration of these :D

I'm really dying to see when this finally comes out every since I noticed that Flash no longer works, the previous versions no longer work. So this was done by taking a screenshot from the film and piecing together all the parts as a giant jigsaw within Photoshop - then recreating these within Adobe Illustrator as vector files, a colour treatment was applied to each for the final animation. All in all there were only 4 circuit diagrams needed to be recreated!

Not to demand something else immediately after the release of this fantastic update, but will there be an inclusion of the health monitors flatlining as the hibernating astronauts are being murdered by HAL?

Oh WOW I hadn't even thought of that but that is a FANTASTIC suggestion I would love to do that. Right, that's it, I'm doing it! I might make it an additional alternative "take" on the standard monitor animations as it can look a little disturbing for some folks (particularly during this pandemic) but I've always found that particular animation probably the creepiest of the entire film. It's so cold and terrifying. Love it, thank you!!!!!

I've already made one big long comment so I'll split this out into a separate one, the graphics are lovely but they are missing the element of imperfection and glowy aesthetic that came about as a result of the limitations of the time. This one is more subjective critique but I like those things! I like the clean version too though. I've played around with graphics in order to replicate a similar effect, it may not be what you're going for but you'll probably find my process for this previous project interesting nonetheless wilkinson.graphics/projects/2001/

This is a really good point, and honestly it's something I've struggled with in the past, do I make it film accurate? Or do I make it fully flat (as presumably Kubrick would have intended)? The previous screensavers always offered up two versions, "Flat" or "Shaded", and I think I may need to do the same again with this release as there are two distinct schools of thought with each approach. Personally I really like the rear project aesthetic (glow, grain, and slight gradient to background colours), but there are some that hate it! So to answer your question yes there will be a version with a slight "glow" and some distortion applied to the backgrounds (in order to achieve that rear projected "look" and feel) and there will be another version without this effect applied. In addition some elements will be blurred to maintain film accuracy.

Hi! Amazing work. I am the creative director of an aerospace company in Los Angeles and we have a conference room called "the Kubrick" I am making looping video signs for the conference rooms and would love to use the home screen animation of your hal9000 project with the 8 square screens. Would you consider selling/sharing the animations with us?

Hi there! Sorry for the delay in my response. Feel free to use the videos! Many visitors have recommended "4K Video Downloader" to grab the files from KZbin.
