Enjoy all your videos very much! I’ve been a full time photographer for 35 years, but I am new to culinary photography. I’ve been shooting mainly on locations that are often not able to kill all of the overhead lighting. I started out using LED but switched over to flash because I needed to control my ambient light reflections on plates silverware, etc. Recently, more clients have been asking for short video segments too. I have been using DigiBees by Paul Buff, which give me both flash and LED with the same modifier…it has its pluses and minuses, but works for me now. For the level of shooting I am doing (for screen and not for print), this universal mix of being a content creator and not just a photographer is getting more and more popular…it’s amazing that the two genres are becoming one for applications like social media, web design and electronic signage, and that the tools to do so have become almost one in the same, smaller and way less expensive!

I not too long ago purchased a Godox S60 projector LED and the 85mm lens for its extension. One of the best purchases so far for my restaurant work that combines with my 2 AD200pro. Combining the projector with gels, gobos, and scrims and adjusting the flash has been a great way to extend what I can do on location.

That was actually helpful because I was considering one of those Aputure lights for still portraits. I don't mind shooting up to iso 800, so I think there could be usable light there.

Thank you for the comparison of flash to LED. Also, thank you for actually featuring the 600d (non-pro). Not many content creators within this gear-for-creators niche seem interested in featuring this light...maybe because it's still $700 USD cheaper than the pro, and hence $700 USD less in potential affiliate payoff. Again, thanks and cheers!

I really liked this episode. When I started in the 80s my light kit was what I bought off my mentor. I really didn't think much about lighting. I was later sponsored by dynalite so that became my kit. But yes, when I travelled we always rented because that was how I was taught. Looks like lighting is still evolving.

Good video and question! When I purchase ; first it needs to simplify my work or remove flaws from earlier iterations second that I can earn more money with it and third creative possibilities. I use canon mirrorless and I save time in post because the sensors are much more flexible and doesn’t fall apart as their dslr sensors except 5D mkiv. AF is much better and more accurate, old lenses perform better. That’s enough for an upgrade for type of work I do.

I think it depends also on your subjekts. Portraits is different from still life. People move. People squint in harch light. Hamburgers don’t.

Thanks for this, it was REALLY helpfull in understanding the differences and similarities in a practical sense - just started *learning* to using a camera, after having had my Nikon D7100 for many, many years, not really *understanding* photography, to now using it for starting photographing product photos and inspirational gear «setups» for my quad roller skate shop, and your videos are sooo helpfull, like the «painting with lights»-segment of another one of your videos - love your approach to building the image step by step and the way you are explaining things :)

Did u notice any cromatic diference, or a color quality diference between the flash and the aputure 600d? I'm about to do a photoshoot of a publicity campain and I'm think about what to use, and what is going to be cheaper to rend in a rental house. tks, was an amazing content. hug

Interesting vid. I'm largely an outdoor natural light photographer but use flash/strobe when necessary. However, I did a shoot recently in a dark boxing gym and used continuous lights (Rotolights). I was amazed by the ease of use and got a lot more images in the hour that I had as I could see what the effects of the light were straight away. It also kind of gave a more organic look.... no substitute for strobe outdoors though
@TinHouseStudioUK2 жыл бұрын
Yeah seeing what you get is kinda a nice thing. Modelling lights don’t give you the same vibe.
@AdrianBacon2 жыл бұрын
Not to nitpick, but if you need more power, bring the light in closer. You could probably roughly cut the distance between the light and subject in half, pick up a couple stops, and not have an unreasonable change in the shadows that you couldn't deal with using a fill light.

I enjoyed your video very much. The only point I might make is that you forgot that ISO on modern mirrorless cameras is truly a tool to figure into your calculations. Not nearly as successful as yourself, but I also make a living with product stills. What I have found is that 1600 ISO is completely useable on my Sony A7RV.

You are always so inspiring... keep going!! But there is a big difference in Watts (led light) and Joules or Watts*seconds. One is instantaneus power and the other is stored energy. If you ignore conversion losses and difference in efficiencies of the two systems, you could power the 600W LED for 1 second with the energy stored in the GODOX Strobe. That sounds ridiculously low, but, if you let all this stored energy out in one short burst, lets say 1/200 of a second, you get 200 times more output than the led.. This is heavily oversimplified but you get the idea... Count on around 8 stops more for a flash..

just purchased myself a Rotolight NEO3, have seen it in action and practised a few shots with one at a tradeshow back in march and really impressed by how well it performs for its size, both as a constant LED and as a flash. for a larger more studio light the AEOS2 was impressive as well. compared to getting 6 lights, 3 for stills/video, getting just 2-3 for both isn't a bad option to have these days. it's also nice that you don't need to worry about gels as it can change colours built-in. they have decent value bundles IMO too so you can get a full studio kit for around £3000-4000 before modifiers. the NEO 3 will be my first light so hoping it's a quality purchase to last me everything I can throw at it as someone relatively new to photography.

Great video comparison. I thought the LED light shadow looked crisper to be honest.
@TinHouseStudioUK2 жыл бұрын
Yes you are right. Now to work out why…

Also thinking strobe fills the white room with more light and that fills in the shadow. The flash image is less contrasty overall.

Freezing motion and CRI are the only important differences. Just darken your room and use a longer shutter speed if you want to do f/22 tilted etc. If you want action, you need a good flash, and if you need excellent colour you need either xenon flash tubes or incandescent constant lights, LEDs jusy aren't great at colour rendering, some better than others but none are perfect.

What’s the Cambo bellows thing attached to the Canon 5DS?
@samcooper55392 жыл бұрын
Very very interesting. I often wondered this when I was starting out but ultimately, I am happy with flash. I do a lot of work with liquid and movement so fast flash duration is essential. I recently started using Paul C Buff Einsteins because of their great value for money for what I do. But had I gone the direction of LED, who knows, maybe my work would have been influenced in another direction. But I also haven't touched video, and I am wondering how feasible not doing video is moving forward.

I'm curious, Evidently your not worried about Diffraction when your shooting at f18, f22! Do you set Diffraction Compensation in the Camera? If Not, an explanation I would like to hear. I do Still-Life, with strobes in a small studio, and rarley shoot over f10
@TinHouseStudioUK2 жыл бұрын
I use RZ 67 lenses and even at f22-32 (lens dependent) you can’t really see any diffraction in the images. On Canon lenses though past f10-13 its very noticable. Id imagine its due to the size of the image circle, but I actually don’t know the reason for sure
@rickjbradbury2 жыл бұрын
I think folk worry too much about it. for portrait work it has become my friend as it deal with moiré in camera instead of post.. Compromise it slightly less sharp images ( how sharp does a portrait need to be?) and you better like loads of DOF :)

a 1200 watt-second flash is not twice as powerful as a 600 watt led unless your shutter speed is around 1 second. if you're shooting at 1/250 that flash is roughly equivalent to a 300,000 watt led.
@TinHouseStudioUK2 жыл бұрын
Oh this I didn’t know. Is there a name for this so I can go read up on it?
@creepyloner19792 жыл бұрын
@@TinHouseStudioUK it's just watts vs watt-seconds. a 1200 watt-second flash uses as much power per flash as a 1200 watt continuous light running for 1 second (or during a 1 second exposure), or a 1 watt light running for 1200 seconds. as long as your exposure is long enough to capture the entire flash you get that full 1200 watt-seconds. with a 1200w continuous light you get 1200 watt-seconds at a 1 second shutter speed, 600 watt-seconds at 1/2 second, 300 watt-seconds at 1/4 second...
@motorvelo Жыл бұрын
Flash is watts per second and the LED will be a absolute out put. So the LED on for 2 seconds should give you f18
