Ha! I just had to get new trekking poles too! I had the REI Flash Carbon and just snapped one on a day hike. I loved those poles. But also put a lot of miles on them. I’m trying the Cascade Mountain Carbon. Have heard so much good about them and such a great price point! We shall see. New gear is so much fun.

I agree. It’s fun and it makes your upcoming trips even more exciting. I’m a big proponent of using trekking poles. Some people say they are a crutch and you really don’t need them. Not me. I roll my ankle several times a day on trail (rubber ankles I guess, lol) and if it wasn’t for the poles I am positive I would have snapped my ankles. Sonja ring a pair that is reliable is key for me. The Cnoc poles were just so disappointing. They were light and went really long but at the end of the day they kept just coming unglued and literally falling apart. I’m looking forward to my new pair!

Always fun to see what new stuff people want to try out on the trail. I finally picked up an under-quilt protector after almost 7 years of hammock camping. I'm curious to see the difference.

I agree. Gear is always fun whether it is yours or someone else’s, if that makes sense. I think you will like the under quilt protector. You will notice the most difference in higher winds/rain or when it is cold and you are close you your quilt temp rating. If you use it regularly it will keep your quilt from getting too dirty and help in longevity.

Thanks Jeremiah! I really appreciate that. I’m glad you enjoy my videos. Makes it worth it for me to carry all that gear. Lol. I did purchase the guide book and map for the donut hole. I want to do it in mid spring this year before it gets overgrown. However, I can’t find it on any gos map like AllTrails or Gia. Did you do this trail and if so do you have any intel? Would this be a trail better suited for a hammock or tent or doesn’t matter? I’m planning on using my tent this year primarily. Love to talk to you offline about this trail. 👍

Dan I’ve done the trail actually doing it again in June with a group I’m their guide lol it’s not my trip tho … the guide book is great however don’t rely on camp sites in map if you read they are just suggested sites only a couple camp sites line up …. I would take a hammock with really no defined sites I found it easier an with be taking on round 2 as well… take the high water rout in kettle creek unless you want everything wet … happy trails

Excellent video Dan! I just got my Zpacks minimalist poles out for a test drive and have liked them so far. Time will tell how long they hold up. Glad to see you're a flextail convert! Was wondering when you were going to make the switch! Yeah don't tell you're wife about the 2 quilts lol, serious cash there along with the xmid from last year. I think going back from a wider pad to a thinner one may not have been the best choice but you could always sell it for a decent amount. Really enjoyed watching this one!

Thanks Dave! I think the flex tail will be great. I’m combining two pieces of gear by using it. It is a little loud but it really pumps up my pad really fast. I think I’ll be “ok” at the least with the pad. I take up less room since I lost weight. Lol. So we’ll see. I do have my wide version to go back to but this one is thicker so I hope it does the trick.

@@backpackingadventures4813 haha 😆 yeah ik how on the fence you are with multi-use pieces of gear. Makes sense too, if one busts potentially all functions break as well. But not as bad with the pump. If the light and pump go you can still use your breath to pump up and should still have a headlamp 👍

Never hurts to try something different. I used a 20” xlite and had a hard time with it. Then I got a 25” wide Nemo Tensor and love it. Next I got a 20” Tensor on sale just to see if it was comfortable enough. Turns out it is! Saved some weight and bulk.

I keep my whistle and Personal Locater Beacon (PLB EPIRB) around my neck all the while when I’m in the outback, yes even in the sleeping bag. The goal there is to have it be a total waste. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

The whistle in that bag is my backup/spare. Mine is on either my chest strap or shoulder strap next to my PLB. My pack is usually right beside me at night as well. Keep it close.

Thanks John! I use a bag liner always. Just a nylofume bag. Sometimes I use a pack cover if I use a pack I know will allow some water in. 99% of the time I don’t use a pack liner but again, I always use a bag liner.

Keep the whistle outside your pack. I have mine on the right shoulder strap. If for some reason you cannot access your pack and need the whistle it’ll be right there on your shoulder strap. Don’t want to have to need it for emergency reasons and not be able to get to it.

Thanks Steve! I bring two pairs of reading glasses. A regular pair and a really small compact pair that I keep in my ditty bag as a back up. Without them I can’t read the small print on my maps or even my phone. Sucks getting old. 👍

I use a walmart cookset and really like it. It has a covered pot with a bale and a fry pan. Its really light.

I really like Walmart gear (Ozark Trail brand) in general. I have a mess kit from there with a pan and pot, etc. I got it probably 20 years ago. I use it car camping now but it was my backpacking cook kit back then for a long time. Great gear.

I'm about the same height, what width did you get for the quilts? I'm trying to get the smallest I can get away with, as I have to get synthetic so it's weighs and compresses less, but idk if I can get away with buying slim width

I got the “standard” width as they list it from their site (55” 140cm). I’m usually a hammock camper about 95%of the time. But I got the standard width so I can use in when I go to the ground as well. Synthetic weighs more and compresses less than down. These quilts are down 900 fill. I’ve used these both in my hammock and ground. Loved them.

Pfft. you dont like buying two quilts? Me either. I'm buying gear in parts cause im broke and choosey. I bought an underquilt for my DIY hammock. Then realizing that i could make a shelter with my tarp and I wanted to go camp sooner rather than later, I got a sleeping pad and am using my underquilt as a top quilt. You say you dont want to buy two quilts... HA!

I always actually looking at my under quilts to use as too quilts. However, they are 3/4 length so very short and wouldn’t work for that. I believe Superior Wilderness Designs make them that are interchangeable for that.

You will love those zpack quilts that’s what I use an you were right on comfort rating it’s about 10 above what they rated for … any temp below 20 I double mine up an they work great …

Nice video. My new gear mainly relates to a trip to Yosemite in June. I need to carry more weight mainly from a bear canister. I have been using a Lite AF frameless but got an HMG Unbound 40 pack and Bear Vault BV500 canister. I was never ultralight and the more weight seemed like I needed the frame. I have done some practice day hikes with the gear and am doing a weekened trip to get ready for my trip in April to do the Quehanna trail where I will practice with the canister. I got the Dustron Dyneema last fall and have used it on a few trips and even debate going with the polyester model because of extreme condensation last October.

Thanks Phil! I was eyeing up the HMG packs but the LiteAF won’t out. Mainly because I don’t think I’ll have the heavy load for a full frame and I’ve been using LiteAF packs and really like them. I do have a full framed pack from LiteAF as well for winter hikes since I have so much gear and it is really heavy. I’ve never used a bear canister but it seems that the only real down sides are packing it inside your pack and the weight. But other than that most people that use them really like them. I’m planning on the Quehanna trail late April this year. 👍

@@backpackingadventures4813 Yeah, that's what annoyed me about it as well! What pad are you using it with? I have one of the old ones and I might be able to 3d print a better adapter. I printed new ones for the V2 for nemo, sea to summit, big agnes, and an old REI pad (not sure if they still use the same adapter sizes though). They make it so I don't need to hold the pump on the pad, which is especially nice for the big 2 person big agnes pad I've got. I can kind of set it and come back a few minutes later and it's done. I can probably make a version for any "innie" style valve pretty easily with jsut an internal dimeter measurement. I don't have a thermarest, so I am not sure if making one for those is feasible. If it's kind of rubbery, I can probably do one of those as well. But if it's hard plastic, I don't think it'll work unless I use a rubbery filament.

@@commentsonthetube14 I have the NeoAir Xlite NXT. It has the wing lock valve thing. One of the rubber ones is what fits. It stays on the pad but sometimes separates from the pump. I may just tape it. But as long as I set the pump down carefully it does stay. It is if while the pad fills up of it pushes on the pump it makes it roll it separates.

@@backpackingadventures4813 I bet you can put a strip of scotch or masking tape around the nozzle and trim the end and it'll be a tight enough fit to at least stay on the pump. Then you can still swap them but it'll be a little more of a friction fit. Just make sure it rolls slightly into the front so it doesn't push down.

@@commentsonthetube14 I was actually thinking about using a piece of tape or something to hold it on place. I wouldn’t need to use it for any other things so I could make it pretty secure. I set up my tent this atelier ion and put my pad in it and used the pump. It popped off of the pump. Once I had it setting where it wouldn’t move it was fine but I think I will tape it. Don’t want to have to mess with it when I’m tired.

Thanks! I think the folding one is more convenient than the regular one. The big thing is the difference when you lay it out on the ground. The folded one lays flat while the one you roll kind of rolls back up and stay flat easily.
