The New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 and New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080 v13 are two standout daily training shoes that are certainly built differently. But does that mean they can't be used for the same types of runs?

Personally I am waiting for the NB Balos as a daily trainer. It should be the best of both worlds easy and fast.

My opinion as a 200lb weight lifter that is pretty slow when going for runs, the 1080 V13 might be my favorite running shoe ever while the Rebel V4 is for sure the most disappointing shoe I've worn. The 1080 V13 is the perfect amount of softness and rebound for me, but the Rebel V4 felt so off balance the entire time. The heel squish is far too soft with a hump in the arch, then the forefoot is pretty firm. It feels like a negative drop for me and I had to work so hard to just keep my legs turning over, like I was constantly running uphill. They hurt my legs every time I ran in them and I had to get rid of them. I suppose if you're a much lighter and faster runner the Rebel V4 may work for you, but I feel like us bigger slower runners just aren't going to get on with those things. I wanted to love them and was so upset at how much I disliked them.

I have both and 1080v13 is also perfect casual shoe as well. For running both are worth having imo,but rebel v4 is more fun.

Just got the 1080v13 as my first proper running shoes and I love them! Tried Asics and Hoka but the NB were the only shoes that properly fit my short and fat feet. I struggle with some lower leg soreness so these feel perfect for me. As I get faster I'll have to look into getting the Rebels as a secondary race day shoe.

thank you for your comment. I have short fat feet but have only tried nike’s which is narrow for me. I was thinking of trying Hoka’s or Asics. 😂 now I’m staying with New Balance

@@evesjeffersonsurban7051 Definitely don’t try Hokas, at least in my experience. I tried the Cliftons and they have a weird lip on the inner part of the foot that caused me actual pain after a short jog. ASICS does make wide models so that may work for you, but they’re more limited . New Balance seems to make all their top running shoes in wide, which will keep me coming back to them. Hope you find one that works!

i do have both shoes and will be using them for this year daily runs (2024). i use rebel v4 for quick sessions 3-5k or if im doing some fast runs as for the 1080v13, i use then for slow ,long runs (10-15k). pretty happy with the release of NB

I own them both of them , the 1080v13 I have 300 miles in and still going strong with a little lateral wear but nothing to hinder how they ride , the rebel's j I just added to my non plate rotation as a replacment to the topo cyclone 2's and so far I am happy with them (and yes I went up a size in the rebel v4)

Probably worth noting that at the beginning you said the foam in the rebel is the same as in the SC Elite, however despite having the same name, they are actually differently composed.

1080v13 I tried 44 and it feels so soft but very snug I tried 44,5 feels much more breathable and comfortable BUT somehow feels much more firm *my usual size is 44

Hi Run Testers! The Rebel V4 has been really for me. The geometry is keeps me rolling and fit has been great because I got wide feet. You think the SC Elite 4 will treat me well too?

I've had both and had contrasting experiences. I didn't get on at all with the 1080v13, I found it too soft with very little rebound, and overall it was just energy sapping. The Rebel v4 works much better for me over many types of fun. Nice and light but still cushioned, with a bit of pop when I go faster. The only downside for me is that it feels very flat drop on easy runs, where I'd like a bit more of a rocker feel.

Would definitely go half size up in the 1080v13. All new balance shoes are half size short. I tried both sizing in store and recommend trying both

NB and Nike are the only shoe companies that fit perfectly true to size. I think people are optimistic about how big their feet actually are. They think they are a half size bigger than they are.

these are too similar a shoe, the rebel v4 feels like a lighter version of a 1080 v10. The 1080 v13 feels like a slightly more stable invincible run. v4 rebel feels too wide and big for fast runs, it feels like the alpha fly the way the drop feels negative where the toes seem higher than the heel. its good for heel strikers, but so is the 1080 v13. The rebel v4 upper is also way to big and loose. requires too much of a shoe lace lockdown which destroys the uppers comfortability. If new balance gives the v5 rebel the invincible run 3 treatment of cutting back on the foam, then I think the rebel has a chance of getting back to the super fun and natural feeling rebel v2 and v3.

What about the stability issue for heavier runners? Is the 1080 v13 too squishy, and would the rebel v4 be better in this case?

In my experience absolutely not. I lift weights and am around 200lbs. I love the 1080 V13 and absolutely hated the Rebel V4. Maybe it's just me, but the heel was so squishy with no support and the forefoot felt stiff. It beat my legs up really bad, felt like a negative drop, and I felt like I was running uphill all the time.

Yes the rebel is more stable and direct to the ground feeling. If you want to sink into the shoe, you can, and you can pick up the pace better than the 1080 v13

Would recommend trying on the regular size if you're keen on it. It's easily the widest shoe I've ever worn (including previous wide version shoes)
