The original 1957 pilot ran 25 minutes. The WTBS rerun of the pilot in 1987 ran only 20 minutes, having five minutes removed for more commercials. Also, it's my understanding that "It's a Small World" did air on April 15, 1957, as the 105th episode of a show called "Heinz Studio 57 ."
@scotthettrick91254 жыл бұрын
Would love to see where you are sourcing that info about pilot being 25-min. I believe you and it makes sense but I've never seen that reported with any evidence. Same thing for the airing Small World on a different show at end of first season of LitB. Also, doesn't make sense they would have cut that much from pilot in 1987 since they clear did extra long intro and credits just to stretch it out to 26-min of typical show at that time.
@ronaldclermont48884 жыл бұрын
@@scotthettrick9125 -- "It's a Small World" was included on the bonus disc of the original series DVD set. I put it in my player and checked the running time: 25 minutes; which is typical for episodes that aired in the 1950s and 1960s. "It's a Small World" (Apr 1957) aired six months before the first episode of the original Beaver show (Oct 1957). Hence the 30-year anniversary for the re-airing of the pilot on "The New Leave it to Beaver" (Oct 1987). New Beaver shows (at that time) ran just over 22 minutes. The new intro plus the edited down 1957 pilot would put the episode running time around the 22 minutes ... so they could put in their needed ads during the airing.
@scotthettrick91254 жыл бұрын
@@ronaldclermont4888 Well done on checking pilot running time on DVD - I have that as well but didn't even think to check there; duh! I just checked it now and see that without the 40-sec of closing credits and 10-sec of black before it actually fades in, the episode is just a little over 24-min, but I can only find one stretch of about 60-sec that wasn't in the 1987 version on TBS (Wally and Beave trying to collect milk bottle caps from hospital maternity ward, then talking in malt shop, then first scene with Frankie). Interesting. As for your other info, yes, I have been posting every single episode of both Still the Beaver and New Leave it to Beaver as originally broadcast, which I recorded 1983-89, so I am very familiar with exact running time of all episodes. You're right that New Beaver eps on TBS were about 22.5-min each (the 26 Still Beaver eps on Disney Channel each ran 26-27-mins because there were no commercials). Those times include the opening titles and closing credits, which account for about 80-secs. So, you're right, that would leave just 21-min, so, with the intro to the pilot, that would take it down to 20. Thanks for figuring that out. Weird that I have only found about 1-minute left out of actual show (plus the 45-sec original end credits, which appear to be blended in with credits of the 1987 NLitB special). And yes, also well aware of the Oct 4 1957 LitB premiere date and thus the 30th anniversary of this NLitB episode, all of which I detailed in my caption summary on this video. That leaves the debut of Small World the previous April 1957 - any way to verify that? So odd that the cast always says it was never shown before (maybe they are careful to say the caveat "as part of the series"). Also weird that the guy on ET in my video says it is the first time it has been seen since "1958" (not 57). Anyway, thanks again!
@ronaldclermont48884 жыл бұрын
@@scotthettrick9125 -- "Verify" is tricky. All one can do for old stuff like this is to check with various sources, and then believe they are legit. I use CTVA a lot. Go to CTVA.biz and search for "Heinz Studio 57 season 3" and you will see it listed under episode 26. Both Wikipedia and IMDb also have it. They all show it as being aired in April 1957 (that ET guy was wrong), but with different days within April. I consider CTVA the most trustworthy, with their detailed information (such as production numbers and copyright dates), and source credits (such as Library of Congress and UCLA Film and Television Archive).

@shettrick28 күн бұрын
Yes indeed, Diane Brewster, who I pointed out as part of the lengthy caption on this video post: ...Most fans know this pilot featured different actors as Ward (Casey Adams) and Wally (Paul Sullivan, who grew too fast by the time CBS was ready to begin shooting the first season). And there was no Eddie Haskell but Harry Shearer played a similar smart-aleck character called Frankie. Diane Brewster (Miss Canfield) and Richard Deacon (Mr. Rutherford) were in the pilot but as different characters (Brewster was a secretary who Beaver adored as much as he would soon adore her as his teacher; her boss Mr. Baxter played by Deacon was a very similar weasel character as he would soon play as Mr. Rutherford). This was the first "episode" of the third season, the second under the title of The New Leave it to Beaver on Superstation WTBS Network and featuring most of the original cast of Leave it to Beaver, including Jerry Mathers and Tony Dow - the first season of 26 commercial-free episodes when the series was called Still the Beaver was on The Disney Channel from November 1984 - December 1985.

I have it but the reason you only see this much of it is because that is all that is allowed due to copyright issues. Universal still vigorously protects its ownership of anything relating to the original Leave it to Beaver show, which this pilot was. Otherwise I would have posted the whole thing as I did the others. No one claims ownership of Still/The New Leave it to Beaver, so I can post those shows in their entirety, but this episode was mostly the pilot for the original series. You can find the entire Small World pilot episode on the DVD set of Leave it to Beaver and with services that pay Universal to stream the series.

The actor that played Wally grew too quickly. From the Pilot to the start of the actual series, he grew to be over 6 feet. Being taller than his parents was not the look they wanted. Otherwise, he would have been Wally.

@calvinnme24 ай бұрын
I disagree. Max Showalter did an adequate job of playing Ward Cleaver in the pilot, but to be thrust into the various situations Ward found himself in over the years, I think you needed a Hugh Beaumont for the part. Showalter was great at playing the cad, and did it several times on the old Perry Mason show that ran from 1957 to 1966.
