More than 200,000 people live in carefully planned New Belgrade. Located on the left bank of Sava River, between Zemun and Belgrade, New Belgrade is divided to neighborhoods or "blocks", built gradually since the 1940s. Urban and building designs were vastly influenced by modernist approaches, and many of the huge residential blocks feature impressive exposed raw concrete details, making New Belgrade the global capital of Brutalism style of architecture. Despite the grim look of vast concrete facades, New Belgrade offers vast public areas rich with vegetation, with safe places for families and neighbors to gather and play. It is walking and cycling friendly, and public transport links New Belgrade with the center of Belgrade. Although modernist approaches put zoning as a major design feature, commerce, offices, education and culture centers are quite accessible. Nevertheless, residents seem to prefer using their own private cars, as I expected to see a much higher presence of bicycles on the streets.
I explored New Belgrade by bicycle on Sunday, September 30th, 2018. Blocks featured in this clip: Block 9, Block 21, Block 22, Block 23, Block 29, Block 31, Block 33, Block 61, Block 62, Block 63. Buildings featured in the clip: Grand Casino Beograd, Hotel Yugoslavia, Genex Tower (Western City Gate), Sava Center, Opština Novi Beograd, Centralni Registar obaveznog socijalnog osiguranja.
