17:46 to see you, Bob, reacting to the hope and optimism that comes from those notes shows WHY it’s important. Superman was always about hope, it literally sprang from the wish of two Jewish creators that wanted someone to help the world feel a bit brighter against the backdrop of one of the darkest (if not THE darkest) moments in human history. To have him telling children how un-American it is to belittle or bully those who are different, to have him be a symbol for so many that felt lost and left behind by our increasingly cynical world….no, you put the fucking music in. You make him be the hero that his father told him about, to be the “light to show them the way.” I’ll admit I’m not the biggest Superman fan, but I love what he represents for so many and I stand with Gunn to show the world again that hope is not childish; optimism is not naive; that we can find our way out of the darkness by standing together

You know, I never really thought about how sad it is that Superman is usually the first superhero in any given continuity, the one all others have to look up to because no one can do the job better than him. It just feels really regressive to say that the first guy to do a thing is the purest, most idealized version and all others who follow are degenerate, lesser copies who can't improve on his foundation or have anything to teach him. It would be like saying a Boeing is an inferior machine to whatever piece of crap the Wright brothers cobbled together out of balsa wood and duct tape. The idea of Superman as an evolution of what other superheroes before him have done is really exciting.
@LupineShadowOmega
@LupineShadowOmega 5 күн бұрын
Well that might be true if that was how Superman actually works. Superman is looked up to because of the kind of guy he is, because of the ideals he wants to uphold and the valued esteem he holds everyone else around him in. It isn't that no one can do the job better than him, its that he does the job so good, because to him it isn't a job so much as a responsibility that he takes to heart and does with heart. Likeiwse, its never implied that no one else can improve on his vision. If anything, his vision and the vision of others from a variety of different outlooks come together because they all eventually come to the same sort of conclusion. "We are stronger together (literally and figuratively). And together with accountability we can keep ourselves honest."

I think that's just this consistent piece of metafiction because Superman is the first real superhero character and comics creators wanted to pay homage to that legacy. But it's been flipped in recent times--both the New 52 and the DCEU made Superman younger than Batman and Wonder Woman. The problem is both projects had a mixed reception overall and also didn't position Superman as the most ideal hero. Hopefully third time's the charm?

Good to hear your thoughts on where Gunn’s head might be at. I just got an anniversary edition of the collected We3 comic w/ a forward by Gunn. In said Foreward Gunn literally states he got the idea the Guardian’s of the Galaxy take on Rocket Raccoon from that comic. Point is: Gunn thinks deep about what he wants his comic book property movies to *say something* and I’m glad to hear an idea as to what that might be

I think the interesting thing is that Marvel seems to also be taking this kind of turn. Like, we identify with the Kree freedom fighters in Secret Invasion, Namor and the subterraneans being not villains, but an honorable society of others worthy of respect, the Falcon and Winter Soldier show centering on how the govt mistreated black supersoldiers… it’s coming together into a more anti-establishment, the good guy isn’t the only good guy scenario. And now, the new, black Captain America is fighting a superpowered rage monster… who is also the PotUS. I’m telling you, Marvel’s supercop era is also ending real soon

@@galten7361Problems ARE inevitable. Especially systemic ones. There isn’t a single system that will work perfectly. Not just because all systems are imperfect, and made of imperfect people. People try to scapegoat themselves and their own personal responsibility for why the world is the way it is by simply saying that we need to find the perfect system when we would inevitably screw up this utopian hypothetical, if we were even intelligent enough to think of it in the first place.

@@thedukeofchutney468 Sure, but the MCU has never at any point deviated away from the overall centrist (if not right) view of societal problems and how to address them. Have the villains say "radical" talking points but turn out to be insincere/hiding things or "just going too far" with the heroes stopping them and making sure the MCU never deviates too far away from the actual status quo (especially if you're largely set in a fantasy land to begin with like Wakanda so you can do whatever without impacting the rest of the world in real countries).

@ That’s not an MCU thing that’s what superheroes stand for as a whole. Superheroes are basically America’s modern version of cultural heroes of past millennia. So a hyper subversive anti American concerned with breaking the system for their own dream and or delusions is pretty much antithetical to the genre. Also these are massive tentpole movies. They aren’t going to make a leftist superhero just like they aren’t going to make a right-wing hero (and I mean actually right/left wing not “I happen to be a moderate that the extremists on Twitter say is that). Most people want escapism and wouldn’t want to see that anyways. Also in reality most people advocating for radical change do so more out of ego then actual logic. For example most communist and fascists alike would want those systems because they assume that when they get in charge things will be different which I would argue is prideful and inherently villainous.

The MCU seems to be content with riding the line where the only problems we get to see our heroes deal with *onscreen* are the people who get “murderously overzealous” about social justice. We never see them confront the societal causes of the issues, only the byproducts who do the “wrong things” for the “right reasons.”

I've always seen the majority of the MCU as anti-authority/militarism. Captain America's journey is finding that he can't trust the authorities, only the people. So many of the heroes are people who decide to help their community and the people around them. I guess the fact that they are recruited into the Avengers has that parallel, but I guess that is the wider sentiment. Maybe I'm reading the paper backward. Ether way, I hope Superman lifts up the whole genre.

I think they got it right till Winter Soldier, which was peak of that approach, which bashed moral authority against cynical power. However....they did not stick the landing with it. But I feel MCU tried to question it and came up nothing, because that would require introspection in how capitalism works, how money works, and that would leave family friendly territory which is pretty much dictate for Disney. How long Gunn will be able to not to clash with WB owners reminds to be seen. So far he seems to be playing dare with both audience and rich money bags. I am kinda into it. I guess this is the only way to be author in Hollywood.

When it comes to the MCU's positive imperialism, there is only one time pre -infinity war where it showed it in a negative light - Season 2 of Agents of Shield, the team found what is best considered an Inhuman colony, and the Inhumans immediately fought back when SHIELD wanted to register them. The show tried to make it seem bad because one of the main characters' Mom who led the Inhumans and the war tried to kill their daughter, but by the end of it what was a peaceful hidden civilization was wiped off the Earth, and all the inhabitants were either captured, killed, or went into hiding. I never thought about the heroic police state much in the movies, but Season 2 sat with me for years.

I actually think Marvel might be trying to head in the same direction with Thunderbolts being the dark cynical take on the Avengers and the general sentiment from the public in Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Spider-Man: No Way Home turning against super heroes. And depending on what’s going on with Sony, the newly dialed back Spider-Man could do the same thing that Superman is doing here. I mean he already kinda did that in Spider-Man: No Way Home. But if not Spider-Man, any of the new young heroes, or maybe they’ll introduce Squirrel Girl, could take on that same role.

So glad that there is an abridged version of this Big Picture sub series. On topic, I am of the belief that a piece of art or entertainment media DOES NOT have to adhere to your personal political views in order for it to be good or entertaining. To illustrate this point, as well as being one of Bob's subscribers, I am also subscribed to the KZbin channel of The Kavernacle, a British Communist KZbinr who has (with substance) criticized the MCU, which as a Leftist myself, is my current favorite film franchise (please note how I chose my words carefully, I said favorite film franchise, and not favorite films, while I loved Deadpool & Wolverine, my current favorite film of 2024 is I Saw the TV Glow), but Kav also loves certain openly Right-Wing media, such as Top Gun: Maverick and the Call of Duty Modern Warfare and Black Ops series. (And no judgment on the Top Gun: Maverick part, as I loved it too.) That being said, even though the MCU does have some films that can be considered Leftist in nature, not just James Gunn's own Guardians of the Galaxy Trilogy, but also the 2014 Marvel Studios film Captain America: The Winter Soldier (in which in many ways felt like a feature-length rebuttal of the third act of The Dark Knight's "both sides-ing" its not at all subtle metaphor for The Patriot Act) by not just having Captain America take an Anti-Patriot Act point of view by destroying Project: Insight, but ALSO dealing major damage to HYDRA by dismantling SHIELD (which in story is a not so subtle metaphor for Bush-era FBI, CIA, and Department of Homeland Security). The 2017 Marvel Studios film Thor: Ragnarok has Thor, Loki, Valkyrie, and Hulk team-up and stop Hela (a symbol of Asgardian Fascism/Imperialism) by letting Surtur the Fire Demon bring about Ragnarok and destroy Asgard (a not so subtle way of saying that in order to completely destroy Fascism means destroying the very thing that Fascism helped to build, courtesy of the allegedly based Taika Waititi). The 2018 Marvel Studios film Black Panther, while the Leftist ideals may be a bit compromised by the way that Michael B. Jordan as Kilmonger is portrayed, it does espouse the values of open cooperation on the international scale (or as the late Chadwick Boseman as King T'Challa put it: "The wise build bridges, the fools build walls") as well as Wakanda not being afraid to call out the colonialism of Africa by both Western Europe and the United States of America. The 2021 Marvel Studios film Spider-Man: No Way Home advocates for restorative justice over the death penalty (the three Spider-Mans working together to cure Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, The Lizard, and Electro rather than letting Doctor Strange send them back to meet their fates). The 2022 Marvel Studios Disney+ streaming series Ms. Marvel had not just positive representation for Muslim-Americans, but also took aim at how the Department of Damage Control are willing to racially profile "Brown" Americans, especially if they're Muslim. The 2022 Marvel Studios film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever LITERALLY has a status quo shift in which both Wakanda and Talocan (based on Mesoamerican/Mexican/South American indigenous cultures being subjected to imperialism by Portugal and Spain) rise up and challenge the Neoliberal status quo powers of the USA, UK, and European Union, implying they will unite and fight to the death to protect both Africa and Mexico/South America from Western Capitalist exploitation. Finally, the 2023 Marvel Studios film The Marvels has Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan meet Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, a former US Air Force Captain, due to how much she fangirled for Captain Marvel, and then realizing that Danvers is morally compromised (which I think may be setting up an MCU adaptation of Civil War II, in which the Old Guard Neoliberal status quo version of The Avengers will do battle against the younger and more Leftist Progressive Young Avengers, I expect there to be a very well-acted breaking down in tears "I can't believe I looked up to you!" Kill Your Gods moment between Iman Vellani and Brie Larson as Kamala Khan and Carol Danvers if the MCU manages to get that far.) While I did list some legitimate Leftist and/or Progressive stories that take place in the Disney-produced Marvel Cinematic Universe, yes, there is some endorsement of the Neoliberal status quo in the majority of the MCU. Again, media art does not have to line up perfectly with your personal political views in order for you to be a fan of it. Again, there are plenty of Leftist/Progressive film critics who loved Top Gun: Maverick, despite its endorsement of the Reagan-era Neoconservative Military Industrial Complex (complete with both the Department of Defense, The Pentagon, and the US Navy cooperating with Paramount Pictures, Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer Productions, and Skydance Entertainment to help produce the film). However, it has been my theory that the reason that, with some exceptions, that Leftist/Progressive film fans have not completely disowned the MCU in the same way they did with Harry Potter is because of some of the Leftist/Progressive stories that do exist in there, and the fact that Kevin Feige is not a problematic bigot like J.K. Rowling turned out to be. (That's not to say there haven't been problematic public figures connected to the MCU such as the disgraced Joss Whedon or Jonathon Majors, but at least Disney and Marvel Studios had the integrity to cut ties with them after what came out about them, even if it meant blowing up any creative plans they may have had that involved them, unlike with the last dying gasps of the Snyderverse that chose to still somewhat associate with Ezra Miller during the production, promotion, and release of the 2023 DC Extended Universe film The Flash). That being said, I agree with Bob. I still haven't gotten around to seeing Creature Commandos yet (I am currently unemployed and had to cancel my HBO MAX account until I get a steady source of income again) but given Bob's theories related to James Gunn's DCU being a meta-commentary on the audience feeling that the MCU may finally be played out, the at times troubling but not necessarily a deal breaker endorsement of Neoliberal status quo enforcement, and deconstructing both the idea of The Avengers as superhero military police enforcers AND how the image of Superman was tainted by Zack Snyder both mishandling and misunderstanding the character and the DC Universe and Justice League as a whole, that is exciting. I am currently reading through my copy of All-Star Superman, that's how excited I am for Gunn's vision for this. Of course, there is always the VERY SMALL chance that this could end up not working, James Gunn's Superman may end up sucking (though I find that HIGHLY UNLIKELY), after all, it's all dependent on Gunn's execution of his intent (I actually re-watched Bob's three-part Really That Bad essay for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and his Intent vs. Execution philosophy is still fresh in my mind because of that). With all that being said, though, I am excited. Not only for a good DC Cinematic Universe that can rival the Disney-produced Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also challenge it and maybe inspire it to stop spinning its wheels in its post-Avengers: Endgame slump and chart some new directions of its own. If there is one thing about the MCU, particularly during the Phase Three films, is that while those films were objectively solid to good/great for the most part, they also dominated because there was no real competition for them during that time. And as the old saying goes, competition will either kill you or make you stronger, and a great DCU could POTENTIALLY have a "rising tide raises all ships" effect for the MCU as well.

yeah, I roll my eyes so much at the 'lets do hour long videos about a frigging PHOTOGRAPH from the set or a trailer. Like, people forgot trailers are ADVERTISMENT they've gonna have scenes out of order and context, same with dialogue. Damn, sometimes even dialogue/talking is not from the same scene but from another. If they appear in the final product at all. Sometimes they're just shot for the trailer. Same for the photos from behind the scenes/shooting days. It can be as simple as 'actors goofing off' or 'just prepping'. I mean...I've got some sort of background in performing arts, as a kid and then in collage I've been part of amateur theater and we often did our own stuff. Like, our director would just make a story/play and it would be very much improvised thing without concrete script...and even with a script we would sometimes change things up or just do some other interpretation and shit would get ironed out as rehearsals went on. and I can promise you, I haven't had ONE instance where things in the first meeting would be the same as what ended up on the stage.

Expecting Gunn to build up to kingdom come or a Superman vs. The Elite scenario over multiple movies seems misguided because I feel like both will be covered in this movie thematically in some way with Superman arriving as a disruptor in a chaotic world (Kingdom Come) and confront a team of somewhat dubious super heroes (Superman vs. The Elite). I don't think Gunn is approaching this in terms of planning a super specific overarching story. I think he's approaching this like his other projects trying to make each one a banger and building up from there, there's a global vision but it feel way more loose than what Marvel has been doing.

Bob and anyone who agrees with his takes here really need to read Alan Moore's work and also Pat Mills' work. They wrote comics that pretty much say that the superhero as it was in their day (and for much after of course) was always tied to Fascistic or at least centrist fantasies. Looking at Batman with other "street" superheroes for one, Alan Moore took him apart through both Rorschach and Ozymandias while Mills did it through the Private Eye. They caught onto the reality that superheroes were always used as propaganda and for much of their history tried to be centrist if not right in ideas.

24:35 - 24:41 I'm sorry, but those are cathartic, not obnoxious. You being so dismissive of accurate criticism of American imperialism is what's obnoxious. But I guess I should expect that from a "ride or die Obama guy."

Funny thing is, this pretty much is what Superman (the very first super-hero) was when he debuted back in the day. Before any super-villains were established, he mostly dealt with abusive husbands and corrupt politicians/lobbyists, as well as garden variety crooks: people who used the power they had to pick on people without power. In comes a guy who only uses the heretofore unforeseen power he has to help others in need, smack around the jerks and tell them, "Do better."

Make 3 videos and then condense them into 1 for more internet bonus bucks, considering you had a lil' moment where you lamented you "place in life" now? Kek. Downvote, brah.

I don’t think I like Bob anymore. He’s such a hipster (“I liked James Gunn first!”) and a shitlib. I’ve been moving further and further left while he’s seemed to have stagnated politically since at least 2008. He’s like one of those people whose brain was so broken by Trump that he thinks Obama, Hillary, Biden and Harris are good guys.

@ Also, Communism isn’t about “giving power to the government.” In fact, the ultimate goal of communism is to create a classless, stateless society. It’s about giving power to the people; it’s economic democracy.
