I have the first book and most probably will get his new one too. Brilliant artwork in both but quite challenging to colour. The leopard (I think) double page is stunning. I would be inclined to colour over the see through areas if it was possible. Thanks for the flip - looks like another addition to my already crowded book shelf! 12:53

I like this book a lot, AND Brun’s first is my fave of the two. I find it funny that apparently some people dislike the other book of his due to his abstract style of merging animals with plants etc, when nobody says boo about Ken Matsuda’s usage of the SAME abstracted melding of animals with plants etc . Odd, no? Lol. Me, I like them BOTH because 1) it’s beautiful, frankly. And 2) it’s not as if this is reality and no animals were harmed in the drawing of these amalgamations. Sometimes I think people are too easily “offended” or whatever, it’s ART. Anyhoo. Just my honest two cents! As ever, your reviews are top-notch!

I definitely don't mind it even in Brun's first book.....like you said, it is not real and nothing was harmed! I don't see too deep into such illustrations. I am looking forward to seeing what Brun does in her next book 🤗💗

I like this one very much. I did see the other book, but I didn't care for the surrealistic touches of branches growing out of animals. I watches only half of your video to keep something a surprise, but it seemed to look realistic enough for me 😆🙈. Thank you for sharing! I ordered it at the great price of 10.75 euro at Amazon (The Netherlands).

I only have Animaux des Bois so far. I think Amazone is a beautiful book too. I agree with you that the style of illustration lends itself to a more realistic colour palette. I think that this more realistic style is why I am less keen on the pages in the first book where animals have branches growing out of them and the illustration of the jaguar(?) in the new book with the see through elements. I'm not sure what I'd do with those pages, but I love the rest of both books.

I think the woodland book is my favourite because I love woods and the creatures found in them. But the Amazon book is lovely too. Rather than being hide-bound to colour these works realistically, I think I am going to think "Ken Matsuda" and the incredible way he colours his artwork. The style is quite similar to that of Paule Brun.

She captures the essence of his work very well. She uses inks a lot but we can use whatever we like. By accident I actually bought a copy of his actual book of art. I thought I was buying his colouring book but that's what comes of ordering in foreign web sites! The book is beautiful so I have that to inspire me. Ken Matsuda’s book does the same. I don’t see it as “impaling”; it’s merging plantlife with animal life. It’s just artistic expression. No animals-or plants-were harmed in these drawings.

Was thinking the same thing. I don't want to look at animals missing pieces, or with branches sticking out of them... they seem hurt... Maybe it's because I'm from a country where bullfights still exist, and sticking things on the back of animals is "tradition", but that completely ruined the book for me 😞

Love the pictures but find it's going to be hard to color in because a lot of pictures go into the binder and you can't finish the picture

You are definitely right about that - mainly the double spreads are going to be difficult to colour in the spine area, especially because the paper is so thick too, the book doesn't fully lay flat. But maybe once I colour in the book more it may start laying more flat, hopefully! 🤗💗

I was just enjoying the flip of critters sitting on trees when the capybara appeared impaled by a tree and then the critters were back to being part of trees, shrubs and bushes. Shame.

There are some are nice images, but I just don't understand why an artist would want to intentionally draw tree limbs, branches, flowers or feathers protruding out from an animal, fish or bird in their artwork. I would have bought the 1st book except for those peculiar renderings.

Color palette decides. If you lean 😊towards browns and greens, choose Animaux. I am more comfortable with the blue/green palette ,I will color Amazone first. Animaux was in my cart and was about to be purchased when I saw a flip through of Amazone. Bought both at same time .Can’t go wrong. 2 beautiful books.Bought them on Amazonuk. They do ship tp US.
