* New sections throughout, with topics including condition number and error bounds for the SVD; autoencoders, recurrent neural networks, and generative adversarial networks; and neural networks for reduced-order models
Data-driven discovery is revolutionizing how we model, predict, and control complex systems. Now with Python and MATLAB®, this textbook trains mathematical scientists and engineers for the next generation of scientific discovery by offering a broad overview of the growing intersection of data-driven methods, machine learning, applied optimization, and classical fields of engineering mathematics and mathematical physics. With a focus on integrating dynamical systems modeling and control with modern methods in applied machine learning, this text includes methods that were chosen for their relevance, simplicity, and generality. Topics range from introductory to research-level material, making it accessible to advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students from the engineering and physical sciences. The second edition features new chapters on reinforcement learning and physics-informed machine learning, significant new sections throughout, and chapter exercises. Online supplementary material - including lecture videos per section, homeworks, data, and code in MATLAB®, Python, Julia, and R - available on databookuw.com.

I watch all your videos. Having not been a math class for fifty+ years I wish I could say I understood them all. I downloaded your book so I can read it today and paused the video to order one right away. I wish I had professors like you when I was in school. One professor I had didn't show up for the first 4 lectures. I didn't show for the fifth. he did. I showed up for the sixth he didn't. I never met the man.

Hey Steve and Nathan. I just thought to let you know that I've been using the book for about a year now. The dual video-tutorial/PDF aspect really works for me, and it's been a great runoff resource for a post-calculus and post-linear-algebra education, plus it hits on alot of my interests (dynamical systems, ML, etc.). Full transparency: I'm on a mission to properly understand a talk given by R. Wallace from Columbia on the Mathematical Consciousness Science channel, so I am looking for topics referenced there. Likely some, like statistical mechanics, you might think are inappropriate (though I've seen alot of very interesting stat. phys. of thing like infinite width neural nets. equivalence with Gaussian processes for example), but maybe topics in information theory and network theory (thinking shannon coding, rate-distortion and data-rate theorems). Thanks for all you and Nathan have vested in producing the book, it's been very helpful.

You are uniquely positioned to make an impact in fields totally outside your own. The passion you display, and hyperlinking your ideas so a student can build one concept upon another i think could appeal to researchers in the soft sciences. Exposing these modeling ideas to researchers for example in immunology, oncology or cardiovascular research areas may bring fresh insights into their own mechanisms of discovery.

Very grateful for this video and this book. This years admission results for admission to the Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) just got announced few days back. As an IIT engineer we were discussing this in our WhatsApp group and also what engineering branch would my nephew get admission to in the IITs(based on his rank/score)… and the predominant thinking is only Computer Science matters and I was arguing that every engineering discipline now needs to be Data/ML/AI driven … and then this popped up. (My batchmate from my Bachelor in Technology in Metallurgy is now a professor and I keep telling him his Metallurgy/Material Science department has to include more of these courses)

Your's and Nathan's book and videos have brought me enormous pleasure over the last couple of years, so I've happily just placed an order for the hardcover edition. Thanks again. In terms of stuff that would be good for a third edition.... this might be more of a fourth-edition target, but... there's some numerical analysis stuff on Nathan's channel which is aligned with Trefethen's book. Things like the Rayleigh Quotient, and Arnoldi Iteration, i.e. numerical approaches to solving eignenvalue problems. Understanding that stuff really tied a lot of things together in my head. As a physics graduate-turned-software-engineer, for me, the core value of your's and Nathan's work has been to make the kinds of topics you usually learn in an abstract setting computationally realisable. So something in that direction might be really valuable.
